I painted that model about 15 years ago, as a yellow blonde, looks cartoony. I may redo it, it's never looked right but at that time I was more of a close enough is good enough painter. Now I'm getting back into painting after a 10 + year break I have more patience to try better techniques. Thanks for the vid, I know it a few years old but still it still helps.

For quick and dirty blonde, I paint the hair yellow and then wash it in brown. This is for *armys* I am NOT going to do all that layering for 50 to 100 Vikings or Elves. When I say yellow I generally mean mustard yellow.

Sure, You can get away with something more ochre, but I would say you're often still better off with something more brown and then the lighter colors on top, even if it was drybrushing. :)

For the cartoon Viking look I wash the yellow with a red.

did you ever try adding a little bit of metallic gold or silver watered down to make shine a little bit more? will it work?

I wouldn't think it would work as metallic flakes always REALLY stand out, it wouldn't provide an even sheen. I think in general, you would be better with a satin varnish or something similar. But I will admit I have never tried it.

Yeah. Just did a glaze of yellow, in some blonde hair the other day, and had instant regret. I guess that will be a pop color in my highlights. Time for more tiny little lines as I try to coax out more detail than WizKids puts in this mini.

Yep, tiny lines is usually the way to go. Also, avoid any sun yellow at all, if you introduce yellow, it should be destaurated ochre at best.

that's exactly what I did with blond hair. I painted it yellow and gave it a wash of yellow ink. It looked rubbish! then I darkened it with brown ink and it looked muddy.

Yep, don't worry, you are not alone. Just throw that yellow out and start with a dark-pale ochre or even a light yellowish brown and you are good to go. I will say you can continue to use brown inks in some interesting ways, especially if you want sandy blonde hair, just be careful and controlled with it.

This is gonna sound critical, but its supposed to be constructive. Already having a "blonde" tone on the models hair before your video started ruined the lesson for me. Verbally your lesson is very good, your easy to understand and explain things well.

Totally fair push back. This may be a candidate for a round 2. The initial color was just a wash of seraphim sepia, but I can see how it would have been better to start from ) metaphorically. Glad it was still helpful with the instruction at least.

Any chance that the camera quality will improve soon? It feels much more like telling than showing in your tutorials as I can hardly ever see what you've done. Is it a focus problem perhaps?

I am working on it every time. It's definitely a focus problem, but auto-focus doesn't work and for it to be very sharp, I have to keep it in exactly the right position. I am playing with it and trying to get it to stay sharp throughout. Hoep there is still value despite my lacking camera skills.

That was my problem, you can tell he's painting the model at a high skill level but you cant see the affect of each individual layer of paint. Maybe go copy Miniac? He spent too much on his set up, but the results were good and you could improve/reduce the cost of the set up.

Why are you not running some Hobby Cheating Seminars at Adepicon? With your skills an KZbin presence I'm sure plenty of people would sign up. It would mean giving up some of your own browsing time but you could make some $$$$ to fund your hobby.

You have to sign up far in advance and I didn't have a good idea for a series of seminars until later in the game. I am going to look and see if it's possible in 2018.

I would disagree that you never want to use ANY kind of yellow for blond hair. I've gotten very, very nice results with Plague Brown (darker blond) or Desert Brown (sandier blond) shadows underneath Pale Yellow midtones, with Off-White highlights. I'd never use Moon Yellow, Sun Yellow, Gold Yellow or Yellow Ink for blond hair, but Pale Yellow is right on the money.
