That was super nice. Thanks for showing respect for the land you're standing on. Great tips and very logical and easy to remember.

Thank you Paddy.. very informative. I have a very aged turbo. with no trapeze. I have fitted turnbuckles into the hulls as the beams had fatigued around the fittings.. also had to rivet alloy plates as the beams were bending upwards under windage. I do not have a rotation spanner on my mast. She sits on the beach and is bludgeoned by Southerlies up to 30 knots so I weigh her down with rocks on the beam corners to prevent her capsizing on the sand at low tide. My height is 6,2 and weight 95kgs. How do you change the shroud pins without the the eye pulling out of the chainplate and the mast plummeting to earth?!.. I also sail a 16 named Pacific Banana with a cut down jib without battens as I only sail her with my mighty Dog Georgie. I also sail ancient A Class and the biggest difference to the Hobie is how vigilant you have to be on ensuring the leeward bow does not bury!! Troy and Georgie

Great stuff - that's a good solution to change the shroud anchor points. I'll make a video on how to change shroud positions without the mast falling down.

I just ask because this boat is significantly different than either my 14 or my 14 turbo. For example the shrouds on my boats connect to the frame not the hulls.

G'day Kevin! Great question. Yes, Hobie 14s remain a one-design class. However, all boats build in the 2000s onwards have the shrouds connecting to the gunnel like the Hobie 16. There is minimal to zero performance advantage; however, it is (in theory) a stronger design. Many Australian Hobie 14 sailors who race on older boats have added a short wire or dyneema from the side-beam down to the gunnel for additional strength. Hope this helps! PB

@hobieclassaustralia thank you for the response! So do all newer 14s have dolphin strikers and grommets in the tramp? I'm not exactly sure when new 14s stopped being available in the US (I thought late 1990s), but finding nice stiff 14 hulls is like finding a pot of gold lol. Thank you again for your response.

Is the Hobie 14 not considered a 1 design class or is there a modified category?

1 design but you can change the rigging.

Get out your reading glasses, it's a long one... Hi. A few weeks ago I commented asking your thoughts on a Hobie 17. You mentioned talking about them on an upcoming Q&A. Being new to your channel, I wasn’t able to find it. Where would I look? We sail in a small bay, about 1.5 miles long by .75 miles wide but have to sail upwind a narrow channel about 100 yards wide by 400 yards long to get into the bay. The winds are often light in the summer but can be in 10 to 20 mph range. I’m thinking a cat with daggerboards or centerboards would beat to windward up the small channel better than asymmetrical hulls. Do you agree? I learned to sail 60 years ago on a 12 ft Aqua Cat and 8 ft El Toro and over the years have had them for the kids growing up plus a series of monohulls to 40 ft. I still have an Aqua Cat with daggerboards. Simple boat, no boom to hit heads, inexpensive, can be carried by two kids, easy to rig and de-rig, fast for what it is and the company is still in business. I’ve had a Sol Cat 18, Hobie 16, only sailing them for about a year each then went to larger monohulls with cabins. Can you recommend a good to windward used cat in the U.S. that could still be fun to sail in the 14 to 17 ft range for at least 2 adults but could be 4. Also, what do you think, jib or no jib? Thanks.

I just found the time to read your comment (It's a long one scared me off somewhat) Here's the short list: Nacra 5.0 or 500 - skeg hulls, very good upwind performance - high volume so could carry 3 or 4 people Nacra 5.7 or 570 - same as above but bigger - maybe less good for solo sailing Hobie 15 (if you can find one - very simple - keg hulls - good windward perfromance Hobie 16 - most available - requires better technique but still do-able Hobie 18 - a bit bigger + heavier but good for your requirements Yes - have a jib I think you're generally better off with skeg hulls rather than daggerboards so that you don't have to worry about hitting the bottom so much.

Hi there @damiencooper1050. An 'Acknowledgement of Country' is about showing respect for the Australia's First Nations peoples as the traditional custodians of the land and waters we sail on. It is common practice for all sporting events around Australia.
