god it really captures that train of thought you have when you imagine one small thing you really want and then it spirals out of control into everything you've ever wanted and that pang you get when you realize what you're asking for it too much, so you pull yourself back to that one small thing. Interesting interpretation. My interpretation was more that the narrator (frank) is afraid of being ambitious and getting burnt, afraid to dream, so chooses to dream about something more safe and obtainable instead.

Dog feels like a metaphor for fulfillment, happiness, achievement and good life. Beautiful track.
@GathererThompson5 жыл бұрын
It's actually an inverted metaphor for God (dog, spelled backwards). This shows Hobo's desperate inner struggle with the complications of being a rising star and his desires to throw a ball and feed and scratch and flea-bathe a gassy deity.
@krusher1815 жыл бұрын
No, wanting a dog is a metaphor for just wanting something pure and beautiful but in your idiotic brain you want everything, including the perfect house and wife and family... but REALLY... you just want a fuckin dog. All you need is a dog, something to love you. But in your mind you tell yourself you need the perfect life to get that same satisfaction.

I love the Symbolism in this, i might be wrong but when he emphasizes that he wants a dog I'm taking it as though he wants everything in life that would make him happy. Starts with a dog merely because that is the easiest to obtain, but only the start to his own true happy world for himself.

He's playing in Royal Oak, Michigan in 2 days. I was just working there two short weeks ago. I really want to go (especially considering the modest $25 ticket price 😶😮 ...), but it's about 8+ hours from where I live, and since my best friend since I was 4 (almost 29 now) took his own life this last mid-May, life had been super rough. I'll be spending a much deserved day off with my girlfriend of almost 5 years and our 2 dogs. Still, there's only 1 place else I'd rather be that night. I hope Frank, Blake, and everyone else has an unparalleled, amazing evening, finds Happiness in every weird moment, and ultimately, can get a dog. 🐾👣💞

I see the dog as the “normal” lifestyle everyone is told to get (college, marriage, kids ect.). I think Frank goes on tangents about his dream which is all the things he describes like “a dog who talks” (which refers to a different, better lifestyle that is against the norm) , but then it goes back to what everyone tells him “the parts where he repeats dog over and over”. Basically this song is Frank’s idea of how to live right (going against the “normal” lifestyle).
