Generally speaking, even though they were carved into beautiful neat pieces of art, in the coin world, these coins are seen as damaged and not worth nearly as much as the original minted designs. 5:47 is my favorite, it leaves the elements of the original designs.

The guy that carved the "old sailor" and that "mechanical" one is named Aleksey Saburov, you can see his work at saburovart.com. He is one of the best hobo nickel carvers out there. His coins sell for a couple thousand dollars sometimes.

Bo and Bert . Took me 20 years to find only 9 to my liking. Real Hobo nickels. 1913 and 1914 were mine. Also a 1925.

if pennies were ever discontinued, would boxes of pennies go for much more on ebay? and would melting down copper pennies be legal?

Hard to say. Silver can be melted because coins are not minted for circulation anymore so the assumption is they will be able to be melted. As for value all we can use again is the silver coins that have a melt value and a Numismatic value if they are if collectible condition?
