I remember the Hobo Nickels in the earl 70's, I had one , my cousin had one..... All hand carved back then, no minting of them like nowaday's......

Daniel, thank you for the informative video. I collect them because they are coin based, historical and folk art. The original Hobo nickels were created in the early 1900’s. The history goes that Hobo’s would carve nickels with a nail. They would use them as entertainment, sell or trade them for food, items and a place to stay. The way you recognize the artist (mostly of the older ones) is by initials and or style of carvings. The highest price paid for a Bo nickel was $24K (box car hobos). Daniel, you’re 100% correct many of them are faked, stamped and not carved. A great resource is the Hobo Nickel Society.

I would love to own one of these. They always remind me of the stories that my mother used to tell me about hobos and how they marked the trees for the good places that they could get food. They truly are art pieces. I would love a very old one. Not going to happen but then I never know. Have a great holiday weekend. ; D

Good morning Daniel from the shaky side Good video I have seen some of the hobos at coin shows my old collecting buddy (RIP) had a couple in his collection there was a fellow that printed his own currency his name evades me at the moment very artful tho it caused him considerable legal problems he actually had it accepted many times for currency I have always looked for examples for my collection but to no avail perhaps sometime you could do a video on that as well also the infamous “Henning nickels” Thanks

Defacing currency. Is it against the law to make hobo nickels or rings. Or melt gold coins or copper. Or are they not considered currency since there is a tax on it now. Cool looking coins. Thanks Daniel

No, not illegal but you can't melt cents.

I love creating art especially using metal. Can I replicate a coin that no longer exists or is that to close to counterfeiting? I copied a portrait of Rembrandt for an art class once. It was a great learning experience. You don’t realize how many different shades of colors are in a painting until you try to recreate it.
@Dinglefart22 Жыл бұрын
You can copy coins on a small all you want but if you attempt to use it thats counterfeiting but you can also just carve copy into it and you can do whatever you want

I have 8 different types of these, I thought they were Morgan's, but they were not, I bought for 2.50, each, the seller wanted 7+ shipping and I didn't pay shipping, kind of a gyp, but cool just the same. Art work on them is great. Good idea for a video.

Crude as in natural and in a raw state. Crude isn’t an insult in artist terms. I love music that crude, like the demos or garage bands. Also art that is not so refined that it is boring.

@@667hodge My comment was tongue in cheek. I am just not anal about common notes and coins being destroyed, painted or marked and carved on. These items have a demand and people already think they're worth more than they are, so the less there is there's that potential they will eventually be worth more. It's not a rule just my rebuttal when people get bent out of shape over nothing. If it was a carved 1893 S Morgan than I would get it. I see graffiti on many rare type coins. I saw a bunch at the two day show I just set up at.
