I started a 5 year journal in march and I love it. It’s wonderful to write a few lines in it when I’m too busy for my A5 journal.

In Japanese, the number *is* the month! The months don't really have "names" like they do in English and many other languages. The first character at the top of each page is "gatsu", meaning "month", and the next one is "nichi" (or "ni", depending on the context). "Nichi" can mean both "sun" and "day".

I started using the A6 5yr journal this year as well and I love it! I love the practice of having a quick synopsis of the day, plus the weather and one thing I'm grateful for. I also started doodling each day. I use one fountain pen and one fountain pen ink each month. I do my more detailed creative journaling in my Hobonichi Cousin. Thank you for the great video!

I have to say, I don't think I have the follow through ability to keep a journal for 5 years. I'm proud of myself for having a digital journal that I don't use every day, but have been writing in for a few years. I think if I had to write in it every day, I'd feel pressured and it wouldn't be fun. However, I'm entirely envious of those who can do so! I really love the idea of getting to look back at memories in this way, and comparing year-to-year and seeing the growth and changes. Also wanted to say that thanks to you I have my first two fountain pens! I've been on the fence for ages, but your new channel pushed me over the edge :) They're both Kaweco AL sports and I love them.

I admire your son's confidence on that hippo, lol. Reminds me of how my little boy is, so determined! I'm so happy you did a video on this! I contemplated on starting a 5 Year when I turned 30 this year, but my birthday is in March and I didn't think I could handle starting a journal with so many blank days 😂 I will have to buy one for 2023, especially now that you introduced me to that gorgeous cover!

Ahh yeah! It makes sense to start it right at the beginning of the year (I had mine sitting around waiting months in advance since Hobonichi starts selling them in the fall). I know other brands make them though, and there might be an undated one available somewhere.

I’m planning to use a basic very thin/extra fine tip ballpoint pen, in black. Will help me write smaller. I also slow down when I write in my journals and use it as handwriting practice. Makes it easier to read my writing as years go by when I look back at how my entries improve over the years. I’m planning to leave the headers as they are because “2” is as self explanatory to me as it needs to be. Save my ink. I love your decision to use stamps. I might utilize that idea as I really dislike the way these books bulk up adding photos, etc.

@@JournalSunshine Oh, thank you so much, I will use these tips for sure 🌻 I decided to start like a mini 5-year journal, for writing a couple of sentences a day is, as she says, less scary, and maybe it will really grow easier with time 🙂 I also started a quote journal (mostly Harry Potter stuff 😁), so again thanks for the inspiration!

I had a little one when I was kid and I actually used it a lot, but when I tried another after college I just couldn't keep up with it at all. Then I got one at the end of 2020 and was using it pretty regularly for a while...till I rearranged some furniture in my room and completely forgot about it when I put things away 🙄 But I recently dug it up again, so I am trying to get back into it even though it has some big gaps.
@JournalSunshine
@JournalSunshine 2 жыл бұрын
Nooo! Yeah, something like that happened with my last one. I think I forgot about it in a move and it was just too much to try and catch back up on. Looking back, keeping up with it for three years was pretty impressive but all I see when I look at it now is so many blank spaces.

I've never tried or even thought about trying a 5-year journal, but I've been daily journaling for nearly 2 years (chronicling a big life change) and now I regularly find myself thinking back, wondering what was happening at this time last year. Which is to say: now I want to start a 5-year journal, except I want to go back and fill in everything beginning on 1/1/2020. Having never done it, I have nothing to add to the topic except the amount of space you have on the left side looks just right. I've seen some that only have 1 line per day and that isn't enough. I may end up just designing my own pages and building my own book. I'm sure you're surprised, lol
@JournalSunshine
@JournalSunshine 2 жыл бұрын
Hahaha you’re the best. You totally should design your own pages! That element of being able to see back into what you did that day in years past is pretty wonderful and it has really good reread value for that reason. That’s why I don’t mind keeping it separate from my everyday journals.
@AbigailPoirier

@@JournalSunshine Ok, I did it! Just finished designing/printing/folding a 5-year journal, using some really nice paper I had on hand. That was easy and didn't take long. On the other hand, I expect the binding process to be significantly more difficult, since I've never tried bookbinding before (have always used 3-ring binders or a disc system). There are probably lots of great KZbin tutorials, though, and it'll be such a sense of accomplishment to complete a project like that!

@JournalSunshine

Oh, if I had to get rid of every fountain pen but one, I’d keep the gold Kaweco AL Sport for sure. The weight and shape and size are perfect for me and I lucked out with a really amazing nib (they’re sadly not super consistent out of the bunch of Kaweco Sports I have). But I do like the Prera a lot! I wish the CON-40 converter didn’t sound like a rattle though. It could stand to be a tad heavier. Love the smoothness of the medium nib and the shape and look and size though!

I love the idea behind the 5 years journal, but at the same time I'm not able to keep the same notebook for 5 years and I usually like to write a lot... so my solution is keep a journal where I write 1 page a day with what happened and how I feel!
@JournalSunshine
@JournalSunshine 2 жыл бұрын
Oh cool, the 1 page a day sounds like it works well for you! I’ve spent a while trying out lots of different formats and approaches and seeing what works and I love that there’s something for everyone out there. I definitely couldn’t get by with this being my only journal (I also love having more space to elaborate and get my feelings out) but lately I’ve been making time for both in separate places and I think this one is something I’ll be more likely to look back at than my longer form writing.

Her website is a bit confusing for sure. It’s the “Trifolio ‘scoop’ [pocket in natural] sturdy leather”, and in the drop downs choose your size (mine’s A6 Hobonichi 5YR), and the leather is “Caribou + Natural + Natural”. sojournerusa.squarespace.com/products/the-sojourner-traveller-f2z67-xnn6f-nczr5

Would you say the vibrant violet has a pinkish hue to it, as seen in this video? Every online photo of this pen looks more true royal purple.

Mine is more of a pinkish purple than a royal purple for sure. It also has more of a matte texture than the gold Kaweco AL Sport I have (which is kind of satiny) if that helps too!
