One time buy valve kit, one propane refillables, refillables online $32 for two ( Home Depot or Amazon when low season) last much longer and fills up more than disposable. It pays itself in long run.

Dragging the "heavy tank" around is no big deal (it's not that heavy) and it beats the hell out of waking cold in the middle of the night to change the one-pound tank on your Mr. Buddy heater, maybe twice per night if you use the high setting on the heater.

Yes, it is very possible to overfill, spec is liquid, 80% of volume. Lpg expands greatly with temp change. Too much liquid, ruptured tank. In fla, for example, bulk trucks are only filled to 80% to allow for temp change from morning to afternoon. Repeat, do not! Refill one pound tanks, is ilegal and dangerous for reason stated above! Lpg boils at -40F.

Look at the bottle sticker, just above the bar code. You will find the bottle manufacturing year. Quite important. I did refill a bottle from 2012, then screwed my burner on it and used it for a few times. Then one day I tried to unscrew the burner to remove it, the bottle started hissing ! The valve was stuck open. I had to screw back quickly the burner and kept using the bottle until empty. Then threw the bottle away. Keep in mind, those valves are not made to last forever. And make sure the bottle doesn't leak, put your finger with some soapy water over the opening to make a film and see if it bubbles.

Used to transfer refrigerants using a refrigerant hose from one tank to another. Important to know once you have 2 tanks hooked together there is no pressure difference between the two. The refrigerant in the cylinders were part liquid (on the bottom) and part gas (on the top) You could then transfer by gravity alone by putting the full tank above the empty tank and the liquid would flow to the bottom cylinder. Important to know here that propane acts just like this (it is actually used as a refrigerant) and with this method I think there could be a chance to completely fill the smaller cylinder. Not a problem if you use it right away, but if you fill it under cold conditions and then expose it to warmer conditions later, this liquid will expand and without a vapor cushion on top hydrostatic pressure will build up and rupture the bottle. We were never allowed to fill any refrigerant recovery tank over 80% of capacity because of this. Probably the best way to do this is get an accurate scale and weigh a factory filled canister and then try to match it . If the large propane cylinder has a one way check valve in may alter the way the gas and liquid flow but I am not positive about that because all I used were tanks without check valves.

@@CyborgMaMa I don't know the weights, but the manufactures of the bigger tanks stamp a TR weight on the cylinders. This is short for tare weight, and that is the weight of the cylinder while empty. If they are one-pound cylinders (one pound of Propane) then just fill to the weight of one pound plus the tare weight of the cylinder. Please check with other sources for the actual amount of propane recommended for these cylinders. Again, I do not know if a tare weight is stamped on these small cylinders.

There is one small but important step you left out. After filling and disconnecting the small tank, spray the valve with a soap solution to check for leaks. If the valve doesn't seal, attach it to your buddy heater or lantern to contain the propane and mark the tank so you don't fill it again.

Liquid propane will expand when it warms. You need to always make sure you leave around 20% vapour space in any LPG cylinder so there is room for expansion. Without this the cylinder can easily over pressure.

I weigh mine after filling and I have set 900 grams, total weight, as my maximum fill weight. I have filled them to 919 grams, but I put it back on my griddle and run it for about five minutes to get it down around 900 grams. I use my baking scale to weigh the cylinders.

You can get a full charge by burping the small bottles with a punch or drill bit for 4-5 seconds. do it with the bottle upright, depress the valve inside the threaded nipple, then fill again with the large tank. DO THIS OUTSIDE WITH NO IGNITION SOURCES NEARBY🔥, DO NOT MESS WITH THE VALVE ON THE BOTTLE ITSELF, it's a safety blow off valve that works opposite of the main valve. only do it 2 times, and weigh the bottle. it should be between 15-16 oz net, if its a little over, bleed it down with your punch. I use these 1lb bottles with a big buddy propane furnace, and it's nice to get a full bottle run without having to get out of a nice warm sleeping bag :o)

Hey guys, so, I did this for awhile. some 3-4 months, and I only used the refillable ones - that were MEANT for this. One morning I got up in my camper in Walmart parking lot, set up my stove and coffee percolator. Coffee boils, I put it in my thermos. I turn the stove off, and go to unscrew the propane tank(1 pound, refillable). As soon as I pull the adapter off the tank, it is billowing out propane into my motorhome. It is winter, and I have my Wave 8 Furnace running - Catalytic ventless. The propane was flowing FAST out of my tank, and my door lock got jammed just like in the movies( no joke, cold weather and it froze I think). I managed to get the door open after about 30 seconds of fighting with it, and the camper was already filled with propane. Threw the canister out into the pavement. I have NO idea why trhe furnace did not ignite the gas in the motorhome, but I do know I am very lucky. Went to the hospital for oxygen afterwards, to make sure I was good. Oxygen was low about 80%. Turns out the fill nozzle on the tank got stuck to the side, which is apparently much easier to do with the non refillables. That is the REAL reason not to do this. Second, this takes forever to do.

@@payoloscovknorris6596 That's just it. These are not certified for re-fill so there is simply no data that tells you- thus the legal restrictions. It might fail after years or after the first time. I presume the tank manufacturers have some idea- after all the tank has to handle the pressure changes from night time to day, not leak after being connected and disconnected multiple times etc. There's a bigger safety margin than the naysayers act like but they simply are not as robust as the re-fillable qualified ones. Flame King sells the re-fillable ones but they never seem to be available anywhere-always out of stock.

Around the 'foot' of the 20 pound tank there are some holes. You can use S-hooks or caribiners and a length of small chain or rope to hang the 20 pound tank upside down from a limb at a comfortable height instead of using that stool and kneeling down to do this. And just leave it hanging there until next time. No need for the flippy floppy.

Just because something hasn't happened doesn't mean it can't happen. You can buy a complete kit for between 35 and $60 depending upon if it's on sale and where you buy it then includes a canister a stand and the Valve & fittings to do it properly. You can also buy additional tanks for roughly 15 to $20 each so once your cost is recouped from refilling legal ones it's no different than the Coleman ones that expose you to extreme liability

Ideally the adapter would be 90° so when you invert the 20# tank the 1# canister would be vertical with its connection facing up. After inverting the pair, depress the "vent" valve on the 1# canister with a small screwdriver to purge propane gas. Release the vent when cold liquid propane starts coming out and turn off your 20# tank. This will assure the highest quantity of liquid in the canister. The bottom of the vent on the canister should be at the 80% point similar to the outage valve on you RV tank. You'll end up with faster and more complete filling without having to worry about the temp of the tank or canister.

This is true, but most people don't want to mess with those valves including me. My luck I'd take pliers to it and it would start leaking. We've been getting at least 1 lb into the small canisters without doing anything special as long as the 20 lb tank is at least a third full. Granted your trick would work for when the 20 lb tank is approaching empty.

@Adam Roberson It is not illegal to refill one pound tanks for your own use. It is illegal to transport a disposable tank that has been refilled. This rule applies to commercial transport, not your private vehicle. Also, the little green tanks do have a pressure release valve.

I’ve heard the steel in the disposable tanks are thinner and are prone to rupture if refilled over and over to stress of the steel. Not sure if that’s true but the small refillable ones are thicker with bleed valves. The Manchester ones are incredibly thick with a separate control valve on the tank. I have those as well as the FlameKing which is somewhat thinner without separate control valve. I have refilled disposable as well as the refillable ones. I have pulled the pressure relief valves on the disposable ones to get more gas in too. The do leak afterwards sometimes. My opinion is use the thicker tanks that lets the liquid out when ~80 percent full to be as safe as possible. It only takes one rupture to ruin your day.

You can do it but this is not safe or legal. Flame king sells the only legal and DOT approved kit with Cylinders that are actually designed to be refilled and are legal to refill

Do yourself a favor and buy the refillable tanks. It's illegal and somewhat dangerous to refill these disposable tanks because the emergency relief valve built into the disposable tanks isn't designed for fill and refill over and over and is quite fragile. The refillable tanks are like $14 and have a bleed valve built in so you can always get a proper fill regardless of temp. You just need a small Allen wrench to operate it.

Agreed...I bought some Flame King refillable 1 lb. cylinders and they work great. Easy to fill, more LP per fill, lawfully transportable and safer than refilling disposable cans. The container walls are thicker and the cylinders are certified for 12 years in the US. Don't take a chance that your refilled disposable is going to leak or that it gets overfilled and the relief valve pops off.

Thank you for this. I recently bought a portable buddy and 20lb. tank. After watching tons of these fill videos and experimenting I found for me freezing empty 1lb'ers for 1 hour, having the large tank at about 60 deg. F., and fill for 1-2 minutes gives me a reliable 14-15 ounce fill, which is fine for me. I do not mess with the relief valve. Propane scares me and I'm a little alarmed that you guys seem a bit cavalier about overfilling the little canisters. I want a Big Buddy now, as I want a hose connection and am afraid to use the hose for the portable buddy which is tank/high pressure which can be 120 psi and up. I want the regulated hose for the big buddy which runs at 1/2lb. psi pressure. That will make me feel better. I have an adapter, slightly different, and i only get 1/4-1/3 the way full. Theres not enough pressure to fill it up even if you drain all remaining gas and pressure out of the tank. So basically you need to keep a lot of empties around and keep filling them often. It's honestly easier just to buy new ones.

Iunno I found the little buddy heater just as good and mounts right to the tank. Also more reliable. The big buddy heater failed for me using the hose adapter to the 20 lb tank. Also here in canada the tanks after 2007 have a safety feature that if you dont have someone who knows what they are doing (turn that screw) you're losing 20% each fill from that float.

Yeah for sure. I wouldn't fill it all the way up though it might pop if it gets warmed up after that (like if you left it in a car or garage or something on a hot day later). I'd leave a bit of air space in there but opening that valve surely lets you put more in and might make it fill faster.

It's a good idea to put a Mr. Heater fuel filter kit on the end of the refill adapter if you want filtered propane. It might clog an orifice. The propane you buy for those 20-pound bottles can be dirty. The first time you open a propane bottle upside down is when the dirty stuff mostly oils blows out of it if it's never been done before.

Worth noting that it's a federal offence to transport a refilled 1# propane tank. Not sure how they would know, but for the rule followers, it's a consideration. That said, have been doing this for years. Don't forget to freeze the empty tank first tho, which is listed as an instruction on the packaging and allows for a full refill.

I usually stop at 1lb 13oz. The empty can being about 13oz. You don't think there's a chance of the pressure relief valve popping if you fill way over a pound of propane? If it did pop you could have one heck of a blow torch in your van Tom

I just bought the connection adapter. Changes a standard household propane connection over to a small bottle connection. Been doing that for years, And it works great. Its too time consuming to transfer to small bottles. Just hook up a 20 or 30 lb bottle and go.

I love my little buddies I love my little buddies have used them in my tents my RVs of even use them in the house when the furnace went out heat work phenomenal they do use a lot of gas though I would recommend if you're going to buy a little buddy in you're going to use a consistently by the hose for the 20 lb tank or buy the adapter so you can refill the one pounders because they do suck down the gas

The secret to running a little buddy like they are. Is to get a propane approved hose with an adjustable regulator. A low pressure regulator will not work on a mr. Heater. The pressure isn't enuff to get through the second regulator because there's also a regulator on the mr. heater But an adjustable regulator will as long as you adjust the pressure high enough which is only 5 to 10 pounds of pressure otherwise you can run a straight hose but then you have around 100 pounds of pressure in it. And I don't like using propane with that high of pressure in case the hose would fail. Manards has adjustable regulators the regulator is adjustable from 0 pounds to 20 pounds

You can get a hose that goes from 30# tank directly to the Gas Buddy (1 # type fitting). would save a lot of bother re filling.

Just an FYI, if no one else mentioned it, on the back of all disposable cylinders there's a warning about a $250,000 fine for transporting a refilled cylinder on the highway. I now refill using the DOT approved refillable cylinders. Much safer and a much better system.

Do not put the small tank in the freezer. I had a cylinder blow the valve set because it was overfull. Fortunately it was outside with no source of ignition and no-one too close. These small cylinders unfortunately have no burst disc.

All propane has the additive, so humans can detect a leak. They wouldn't chose an additive across the entire industry that would cause premature failure.

I don't know if this has been covered in the comments, but if you put the little tanks in your freezer and set the big tank in the sun then do the process it will fill closer to full and quicker . Another recommendation. Coleman Black Cat heater will last all night on high and longer on low.

This process can even be more simplified if you used a long hose with the adapter on both ends. That way the big tank can always remain upside down and you'd have a secondary on/off valve nearer to the small tank being filled. It'll eliminate the need to be turning the big tank upside down and then upright again

Really should get a scale and weigh them out back to 29-30 oz. no more. You do not want to overfill them which could lead to unwanted venting of the bottle if they get hot. Just a safety tip. Overfilling is not good.

I worked for a gas company for years one of the largest 3 propane suppliers. I wouldn't recommend filling that way. Sure if you're careful you could get away with it but YOU CAN OVERFILL THAT TANK. The pressure is directly related to the temp of the propane! The amount won't matter the D.O.T. makes these companies weigh the amount of every cylinder to ensure your safety. Liquid propane will expand 17 times more than water with the same heat applied (rise in temp). So be careful! You may want to weigh your cylinders to make sure they aren't over full and to see if you gained anything.

It's illegal to fill another propane companies cylinders so most likely that's what that is about but I'm not an Attorney. If you own the tank they're probably not going to do much they don't want someone getting free tanks and cutting their prices so they had a Lobbyist go to bat for them and make a law against it but like I said "I AM NOT AN ATTORNEY" so.... choose wisely I'd advise against it but the choice is yours. I will say this that the propane inside that cylinder is about 210psig at 100-110 degrees F. So be careful where you store it (not in a hot area) the tank should be rated up to 250psig but the pressure relief valve can start to vent propane off at or around 230psig. A tank bursting with that high of pressure WILL CAUSE DAMAGE. If you read the label and follow the instructions it is a safe fuel to use and you shouldn't have any problems.

I built me a vacuum pump where I can pull a vacuum on the little bottle before turning on the 20lb bottle to Full the little one. Sometimes I put the little bottle in the Refrigerator for maybe an hour and the big bottle out in the sun, before proceeding

One warning about the 1# bottles. The "valve" in them is just a rubber check ball. They can leak or wear out very easily, giving you a propane leak. Any camping supply should carry brass caps for the small bottles. 2 for $8? That's cheap insurance to guarantee the small bottles can't leak. Cheaper than replacing a bottle that leaked out.

Hobotech why not use a 20 lb propane tank to power your little Buddy heater? Keep the tank outside and run a hose through a window/door to the little Buddy heater. With this method there's no need to change 1 lb cylinders several times a night. If you need to force propane out of the big tank into the 1 lb cylinder while the big tank is inverted and hooked up to the 1 lb cylinder lightly tap the big tank repeatedly with a rubber mallet, not a metal hammer, this should force more propane into the 1 lb cylinder. If you want to know how much propane you're getting into the 1 lb cylinder weigh the 1 lb cylinder before filling and after. That will tell you how full it is.

Thanks for the video! I was doing this the wrong way with the big tunk facing up. and I was getting half load. In other hand I read that the coleman tank wall is thin so load an discharge will work on this metal and at some point could explode. So provably do this too many times will no be safe I guess, There is refilleable tanks at amazon. that are heavier, for around 10 U$. that would be more safer. Thanks again

After refilling the 1lb, bleed off some of the pressure by pushing in the "pin"/valve that releases gas flow. Reattach and fill some more. You can do it a couple of times so max the fill.

get a $10 scale and weigh the 1lb tanks. They will weigh 31.3 oz when full. Sometimes you have to use the valve in the 1lb tank and let some gas out so you can get more liquid in. You probably won't get a full 1 lb fill without venting a little gas out. Weight it, fill it, weight it, vent it, fill it etc. until full. Or just hook Little Buddy straight up to a 20 lb tank. It is a wonderful way to save money. Loving your channel

Only problem with that is new 1lb bottles are filled with filtered gas needed for Little Buddy heaters, when you hook up a 20lb tank to one yes you use a hose with a filter, maybe that could be incorporated to fill the 1lb with clean gas somehow, great idea though.
