Hocket II Demo

A MIDI device for flexible voice allocation in Ableton Live.
Hocket II takes the MIDI note messages on a track and splits them up into single-note events which are routed to up to eight other channels. Additional Hocket devices on those channels pick up the notes and play them. This allows for one piece of melodic content to be split up among multiple instruments, achieving a Hocketing effect.
An evolution of the original Hocket device, Hocket II includes several new modes, bug fixes, performance enhancements, and an updated UI.

Incredible Max for Live device! Immediate purchase. I have actually tried "hocketing" by spreading notes across different tracks/devices but I did not know the term Hocket nor that it was actually a musical technique. The KZbin algorithm suggested the original Hocket video, went to buy it and saw there was version two. This is a thoughtful update to your original devices. I can't wait to experiment with it, mixing eurorack voices with vsts. Thanks for creating it!

Love it!! Ive been using version one for a while now, the new addons are great! The only thing I would add, would be a mode where you can modulate the note output channel selections, you could set an LFO to modulate the MIDI output channel, or use an automation line to select which synth will play which note. Keep up the awesome work!!

Wow. Gonna have some fun running Nora and Phrasebox through this, along with whatever mididelays and other devices I can run alongside this. A veritbale cascade of notes, arpeggiations dense texture and interesting orchestrations will ensue.

Love this device.... If there is ever a Hocket 3 I would love love love the ability to be able to split the original midi signal by pitch value range. That would be epic in the generative/random realm.

I’m still having fun and growing with Hocket 2…. in ASR Mode: , I got 4 plucked instruments , guitar, pluck, harp, Zheng, and shifted the track delay times , e.g. T1-4, 0, -39, -18, 97 , to get a strum effect, this is the only way I knew how… and it works. I also added the option of the midi effect [env to arp rate strum] mapped to [arpeggiator rate ] . Tweak the offsets to taste. 🎹🎸

Great to be able to use more than one instance - thanks! Experiencing unexpected behavior with Hocket II. Last note out is the only one allowed to sustain. Each new note cuts off the last. This is not what I’ve experienced with the original Hocket. Is this as intended? Thanks!

Nice device and nice interface ! May I make a few observations ? I've been researching in the same area, as I love "paraphonic" allocation mode that you can find, for instance, in the Mono/Poly, especially with the Tubbutec expansion. From my point of view, and of course if I'm not mistaken, your device has two downsides : - It uses send/receive to send the MIDI notes across devices. This adds latency. To remedy this, my trick is to use a CC as an "identifier" that is sent just before the note data instead of using send/receive. - It doesn't handle note-offs. Meaning you can't have a long note holding while other are still "rotating". This part is actually quite tricky to solve. I think I've got a working solution, but it might need some further testing. Anyway, I'll try to share my device as well ! Thanks again, and I hope I don't sound judging or whatever, that's not the point. I'm just a "voice allocation enthusiast".

hi im building a multivoice effect rack with this device's ability to separate chord to individual notes. however, when a receiver receives a new note, the previous receiver released a new note. is it possible to make it so that individual receiver hold and release its notes based on the original input note length? how to achieve that if possible?

Does this work with chords where all notes are hit together? I guess you could trick it maybe by slightly delaying every note?

yes, it's no problem, and no delay was needed. the thing about computers is that nothing ever happens at *exactly* the same time.

Is it possible to play chords using Hocket? I'm trying to recreate the Oberheim 4 Voice functionality using Hocket and 4 independent synth voices.

Hi Tony! I'm not familiar with the Oberheim 4 Voice functionality specifically... but I have used Hocket to to play chords with the Elektron Syntakt, which is mono, and that worked just fine. It was actually pretty funny how I got the idea, I googled "how to play Syntakt as a polyphonic synthesizer" or something and a youtube video came up that told me I should use my own device. lol. Anyway, I'm a long time MN user and a huge fan of your incredible designs. keep up the good work and good luck with the poly!

great concept. I found some issues when having it split a faster progression with many notes, such as an arp converted to midi. i do get a cool swung rhythm, but its having trouble keeping up with the timing.

any recommendation on sample rate or affect of higher cpu? this may be causing it, some pdc or such.

how fast are we talking about? i imagine the lag would be more likely to occur in the instruments because hocket isn’t doing anything cpu intensive. there is some latency introduced by sending the messages to other channels, but it’s usually very minor…
