Born in Canada I worshiped the Leafs. I moved to NZ in my 30's and there is no difference between our love for hockey and the Kiwi love for rugby. Nice video. Players can play for anybody else in New Zealand in either of two NZ professional leagues when the All Blacks are dormant. All Blacks are paid to play. They earn about $7,500 a week, but stars can make $1m a year. Women's rugby is every bit as tough as men's and honestly, more fun to watch.

The most recent Women's Rugby World Cup final, played between England and New Zealand (in 2022, I think ) was an enthralling game of rugby. Both teams really skilful. The teams played to their different strengths. The contrast added to the quality of the match. I think this match might be available to watch on KZbin. The match might be technically termed the 2021 final. Yes, there sure is tackling in the Women's game. I enjoy women's rugby ( fifteens and sevens ) at present as much or more than I enjoy men's.

Eligibility Rules Currently, players must be contracted to a New Zealand franchise or union to be eligible for All Blacks selection, ensuring Kiwi talent remains in Aotearoa and keeps the national game strong. Previously, players would look offshore as they approached the end of their playing careers. With a small population along with being geographically isolated, tough eligibility is only way to keep many players in NZL

In terms of players having the opportunity to play overseas to play overseas to earn more money (while still being eligible to play for the All Blacks), they have a scheme/set-up for elite (or long serving) players in the Squad that have played roughly between 60-80 tests to go overseas for a season (usually during Super Rugbh off-season or outside of International season).

Some of the All Blacks have a clause in their contract that allows them to play overseas for a short period of time before returning to NZ to be eligible for the All Blacks squad again. The All Blacks have a sabbatical system, a year away from playing in NZ, for senior players to go abroad and play, usually in Japan. This lets them earn a bit extra, play some rugby but at a lower level so they can relax and prolong their careers. It’s important to remember that although their wages aren’t as high as they might get paid for playing abroad, most of the All Blacks also get some serious income from advertising, many multiples of their rugby income. Maybe it’s changed now, but when I was last there, you didn’t see adverts featuring players who had gone abroad and I’m not sure if they got their advertising yen, euro or pound. I certainly don’t remember seeing any former AB get significant advertising time in the U.K.

Most nations have the rule that you must stay home to play internationally, even tiny Wales where it recently has become a big issue. South Africa only recently dropped that requirement. It is especially understandable in New Zealand 's case due to It's isolation from the rest of the world. If the All Blacks want to practice and some of their squad plays in Europe it's a big issue. Sure they can (at great expense) fly in but their internal clock is going to be off some 12 to 15 hours. That's not exactly a best case scenario. If South Africa's boys are playing in Europe they have a lower flight time and they pretty much stay in the same time zone so it's much less of an issue. It makes even less sense in the case of Wales. If their lads play in England they could get to Cardiff with less than a 3 hour drive.
@EamonnReacts9 ай бұрын
That makes sense too. I guess I'm just so used to more north american sports where the international play is so infrequent and teams generally don't play with each other other than like a week or two before a tournament.

Great video bro. I like your curiosity. I'm a footballer (soccer player) and New Zealander in my late 30s. Rugby is my 2nd favourite sport.lol Rugby is close to a religion here & has an effect on the nation both positively & negatively. Change is inevitable, in any & all ventures you wana be "on the front foot"as they say in rugby. At the top of the NZRU they're taking a more business/commercial approach because it's the times. But trying to keep that core "grass roots, school boy, academy, local club, provincial, super franchise, ABs" pipeline intact and functioning. We're struggling to get fans on seats at games. Paying a monthly subscription or illegal streaming is much easier and cheaper. IMO we miss our neighbours next door being strong (Australia). In the 90s both teams kept one another sharp. But their population is branching to other sports and you know the rest of that tale. South Africa have chosen well. England has the richest rugby union in the world. Ireland and France are not only dominating at international level. But they're both winning international under 20s competitions. Their up & coming players are well trained, highly skilled and talented players. I look forward to the next few years of world rugby. Six Nations, Rugby Championship. World cup. It's going to be entertaining as hell💪🏾🤙🏾 Cheers bro

Australia actually beat New Zealand to two world cups! My haven't time's changed! I not sure Kiwis understand the football landscape here in Australia! Our religion is Australian rules football! I must say this video is a bit misleading at the start though, it said 1905 tour 2 the British Isles, we played 35 'tests', it should say 35 games, 4 were test, we lost 0-3 against Wales, it said we actually scored, but the player Bob Dean's, was pulled back into the field of play, the ref was pretty slow, he didn't see us over the line, when he got there, all he saw was our player, not over the line, years later, the Welsh player, on his death bed, admitted we had indeed scored, still it is what it is, 34 from 35 games, is a pretty good strike rate...

Some of the more experienced All Blacks will have clauses written into their contracts allowing them a sabbatical, often 6 months, to be able to go over seas to play for more money then come back to Aotearoa and continue their All Blacks careers (Ardie Savea, current world player of the year, is on sabbatical right now to play in Japan's Rugby League One). Professional rugby players in NZ are paid (including All Blacks), but because we are such a small nation with a small economy, they don't make what their counterparts in larger nations make. But, these guys don't play for the money; for most, there is far more pride is wearing the black than signing a huge contract somewhere else.

This video missed out the second teir of New Zealand rugby, which is the National Provisional Championship, whose players are also professional and the level below that, the Heartlands Championship which is amateur. New Zealand Rugby Union (NZRU), a member of World Rugby, has a Legal collective agreement with the NZ Rugby Players association, also NZRU provides licenses for the super rugby teams. Therefore the NZRU is the sole employer of persons employed to play Rugby for a New Zealand Team. NZRU manages all generated revenue's and pays players contracts for provincial and international level, also pays player generated revenue's to individual players. Essentially it is run like a corporation where all teams act like subsidiaries to the NZRU, it has advantages but also creates a monopoly on the entire game in NZ.
@ds505869 ай бұрын
NZRU for example owns and has the right to reuse and sub-license any Player Licence Property on a worldwide, irrevocable basis despite the expiry of this Collective Agreement. It also means that, beyond the expiry of the Term, it owns and has the right to use and sub-license, on a worldwide, irrevocable basis, Player Licence Property. Player Property means in respect of each Player any means of identifying that Player, including but not limited to the Player’s name, nickname, image, signature, photograph, voice, talents, and any other identifying feature of the Player on, or in, any written or printed form or any audio, video and digital recordings and includes a licence of any relevant trade marks that the Player may have registered or which the Player may have or applied for registration.

Yeah - Eligibility rules has always been intricate for NZ rugby, we have alot of Talent with heritage from throughout the Pacific. So naturally, those growing up in NZ want to play for the All Blacks, but a byproduct of that is that the Talent that played for the ABs, but then not picked again for future squads, were barred from playing for their (other) respective heritage countries. However I know that there have been talks and progress made in modifying these rules to allow the success of all Rugby Nations. But there are definitely higher playing leagues out there. All Blacks arguably most greatest No. 10, Dan Carter retired from Internation Rugby in 2015 and went to play for a Club in France, granting him the Highest paid Rugby Player at the time with a contract of 2.25m per season. Its bubblegum change compared to the US/CAN Sports. Jonah Lomu turned down a 10mUSD contract with the NFL Dallas Cowboys team in early 96. Quoted because he wanted to play for the Black Jersey. But since more information about his sickness was made public, its understood that Jonah was discovered to only been playing at 70%-80% capabilities. Crazy now that we look back and ponder. It's worth noting that New Zealand also get a lot of top talent from the island nations close to them. Players from Fiji, Tonga and Samoa have often made it into the AB setup because they don't have as good opportunities or infrastructure in their native homelands to match their ambitions. So they move to NZ to play rugby there and in that way become eligible to play for the ABs. Now that those island nations are becoming more prominent in world rugby the ABs don't lure as many young islanders into their fold, I think the island nations are beginning to feel like they're being cheated out of their quality players because of how enticing the AB jersey is. So even though they're not completely homegrown, NZ produce some of the best players in world rugby, remarkable for such a small nation.

Can’t argue that a lot of people move from the islands to NZ, but the vast majority not to play rugby. NZ especially Auckland is a massive Pacific melting pot, it literally comes with the territory. Just my two cents, it’s a bit more organic than say if a European nation was poaching players from the islands. To your point, in the modern era we are losing players that were raised in NZ but are eligible to play back in the islands so are taking those opportunities.

In New Zealand we used to play bullrush growing up as kids at school at lunchtime etc. It could contain as many as 50 players. One defender in the middle with the rest runners. The defender attempts to tackle the runners trying to make it to the other end. Whoever is tackled, now becomes another defender. And so on until everyone has been caught. It's outlawed in a lot of schools because of damage to uniforms and injuries. When the defenders start to outnumber the runners, there could be some brutal two, three, even four man smash tackles.

The All Blacks play the game superbly well. On their day, they are a force to be reckoned with. One a bad day, for them, they are a force to be reckoned with. They are half Scottish Highlander immigrant, half South Sea Islander, or hybrids of both: Warriors; both suited to physical hard work and hard sport. Rugby gives them International recognition. It 'puts them on the map'. "Rugby is New Zealand and New Zealand is Rugby", was the old 'watch-word'. Rugby is their 'religion' and they are 'zealots'. They retain that identity passionately. They are intimidatory too, relying on war dances before 'combat'. Not that long ago, on the yard-stick of time, their battle Hakas spoke of it: "We will kill you and then we will eat you"; literally. At this moment, some former All Black rugby show hosts are unable to contain their spite against Ireland: 'Ireland, who "choke" at RWC's'(Aye). Ireland who will, "get thrashed in the 6 Nations opener in France" (Wrong), et cetera ad infinitum...Ireland, a small Island who's Rugby Union rates as third in Irish National representative sport relevance, yet Ireland beat the All Black juggernaut in a three Test series, in New Zealand, in 2022 and are now 'person non grata' . Sore losers for sure. Compare this to the attitude of the Springbok, who respects Ireland, win, or very rarely lose to Ireland. Yes, it matters to the Springbok if they lose and this is normal, but the Springbok bears no malice, no on-going spite. The old-hands, passionate former Springbok legends like Naas Botha, commentate with an open mind and we Irish supporters love them for that. But all said and done, the All Black legacy is the most dominant by a way, though professionalism will narrow the gap; especially with the South Africans who have come to rule the roost of late; and deservedely so, in my op 🏴☠☘.

@JaemanEdwards9 ай бұрын
They rule the roost when the All Blacks are down to 14 players. Otherwise the All Blacks win easy. And when they do, it's a triumph of positive attacking rugby over boring negative rugby. There's a reason this hockey fan has heard of the All Blacks but not the Springboks.

😮 It's a reasonably simple answer , the Polynesian , Maori people are among the best natural athletes on the planet (2nd behind African / Americans) they are big & fast. However the even more predominant factor is they play against opponents who are amongst the worst "athletes" in their given countries , many overweight, slow individuals who don't belong on a world stage , not rocket science !
