Patrick Kane has been lighting up the NHL & the Detroit Red Wings have been reaping the benefits. After going through a serious hip surgery over the summer, many rightfully doubted whether or not Kane could return to form. We break it down in this video.

I had the benefit of having had a hip resurfacing surgery as a hockey player. It's a weird type of injury that leads to it - it doesn't happen all at once like a blown knee or shoulder or whatever, its a slow decline into increasing pain that interrupts your skating, which explains his numbers dropping over the past couple of years. And then when you do get the surgery it's an incredible relief provided it goes well. It was also a much, much easier recovery and rehab than my ACL surgery. Makes perfect sense to me that he's doing as well as he is.

An underrated part of Kane's game, as a smaller player, has been his ability to avoid getting beaten up physically over the years. The hip thing was a result of years of wear and tear, but through most of his career he avoided big injuries that resulted in many games missed. You can appreciate this more as you see the repeated injuries to a player like Jack Hughes, who is as close to vintage Kane as any player in the league, both in style of play and physical appearance. Unless Hughes manages to find the magic formula for avoiding the big hits the way Kane did he's going to have a short and ultimately disappointing career.

After getting Debrincat, I saw a lot of wings fans pretty happy with our offense. We were running hot, for sure, but I thought our game plan was pretty clear and sure enough, teams adjusted in the subsequent showings. Getting Kane, even if he wasn't going to be as good as he's been, was something I thought would be a perfect fit and a great feather in our top 6 with his passing and IQ alone. No offense to Raymond or the other forwards, but Larkin and Debrincat would regularly be hung out to dry in the O zone, and needed someone who could give them more options. We had decent depth before, but we have a SOLID Offensive squad from front to back now. With the goaltending shoring up, our defensive play had been our last soft spot (I would argue against calling it weak, just a little soft) and we've done a good job adjusting in the last few games. I'd still like to swing for one more step or half step up there to make me feel good about the team from front to back, but I have a hard time picking who I'd send away or down.

His skating has gotten so much better since last year. Hell, it seems like every game his skating improves. It was rough his first few weeks back from surgery. But he's doing crossovers and bursts just fine now. The thing with Kane is that he is very deliberate about his speed, choosing his pace. He doesn't have Larkin or McDavid speed, but he never did. There have definitely been moments since the All-Star Break where I've been floored that Kaners can still get up to speed that quickly.

Kane's entire career has been built around hockey IQ, hands, and the ability to be effective without putting himself in risky situations. He hasnt raced for the puck or engaged physically since he was young. He has always avoided risky situations as best as possible... as a Hawks fan i remember frequently being disappointed in him shying away from puck races or avoiding the puck if he sees he might get hit. But eventually i realized this is part of what makes him such a good player. The way he plays the game makes him someone who will be a superstar until he retires. But, on the other hand - not sure how long can he stay healthy - we´re lucky if he can. And on the third hand - I don´t really think he´s gonna be the missing piece of making Wings to be real contender - like to remind Coffey in 90´s. But he´s going to make impact on other players and kick on winning culture in this team, while this is something the team was missing for a long time. Considering that, he´s 12/10 move Steve did. The relatability to Patrick Kane's standpoint; whatever you do in life, it's got to be awesome to come back successfully, when everybody counts you out As washed up.

Kane would have been one of the best to ever play if he did anything on the forecheck or in the defensive end. He hasn’t had a positive +/- for a long time. He’s not washed, but can a Debrincat and .Kane led team win in the playoffs?

1. It's Patrick Kane. There was going to be some kind of comeback even if he wasn't at 100%. 2. As a professional hockey player, it's a hell of a thing to know that Steve Yzerman believes in you...
