Personally, when I see this, I see an accident. He took the shot, he was watching where the puck went, and his stick on the recoil hit the player's skate--instinctively/reactively, he moved his stick to avoid tripping the player, and it unfortunately caught him right in the face. That's how I read the play. I don't see any intent to 'stop the player from getting to the puck.' But hey, maybe I'm wrong. Playoff hockey is pretty cutthroat.

So when Burns went from his area, he literally walked the aisle where people were going to their seats, and literally could have got in the Kings' coach's face had he not been held back. In fact, crowd members could actually walk by and say things to players as they walked by, but somehow, everyone respected that the players and coaches were working. Hockey culture, I guess?

Not hard to miss that call. Kerry is across the rink, Gilmore has his back to him. Nobody saw it. It's only on a slo-mo replay that you realize it was Gretzky's stick and not the puck that hit Gilmore in the face. It's hard for new hockey fans to understand how the game was played before instant replay, coach's challenges, four refs, and NHL head office monitoring every play. Also, penalties were not handed out like participation ribbons in the playoffs like they are today. The NHL is softer than a marshmallow today and the product on the ice reflects it.

Blame Anderson for that stupid hit in the back at that crucial time

Just going to leave out the part where Fraser said that Gilmour said he it was the follow through. A claim that Gilmour has never disputed.

That's some manipulative shit that Gretzky did there lol. Because he didn't argue anything in that situation, the referee probably thought that his time, he really didn't do anything worth a penalty.
@Roof_Pizza11 ай бұрын
Why complain when the call is going your way? LOL to you.
@mat547311 ай бұрын
Huh? Isn't it just that Gretzky didn't try arguing because he knew he was guilty? Not his fault the ref still called it in his favour.
@Khorney11 ай бұрын
I dunno about that, I mean there is no doubt that Gretzky did the high stick, and he should have gotten penalized. There is no way Gretz did it on purpose, but he knew he did that it regardless, so he just skated away and kept silent and hoped for the best. I have a strong feeling he would've accepted that penalty without protest would it have gotten called. He was just real lucky it didn't.

@mat5473 Professional sports is 90% mind games. I mean, obviously, there's a skill gap, too. But these guys are talking trash to each other non-stop. In hockey, there's most of the physical stuff allowed, but for example, in soccer, players constantly keep stepping on each others' toes, pushing, pulling, pinching. Pros will literally do anything to distract and piss off their opponents and also manipulate the referee.

@@niklasmuller6969 Keep in mind that Bettman's job was to build the NHL in the U.S. Having a Toronto - Montreal final would NOT help his cause. We know that U.S. fans would not tune in. The leafs dominated the Canadiens during that regular season! Bettman pushed to build U.S. Fanbases with all his might. No more Canadian expansion teams? - Only U.S. ones? I'll never forgive him, and I no longer watch the live games, but he has done well at building the league in the US and has made Owners Rich! I bled Blue in those days, and as the weathiest team in the NHL, ya...the leafs were targetted by the Officials, the League and most unfortunately, sabotaged by their own greedy and uncaring owner - Harold Ballard. "Just wait till next year"!! 😉😓

Had a nice view of the action; was sitting two sections over from the press box at the Forum. NHL rules then would have allowed Fraser to give Gretzky a double-minor for causing an injury by a high-stick deemed "accidental." Gretz would have only got a major (and automatic game misconduct) if the injury from the high stick was the result of him being deemed "careless." Leafs were fortunate Anderson didn't get a major for checking Blake from behind and into the boards. That would have been an automatic game misconduct. In Fraser's discretion, a minor was given. Also, consider this: Gretz only played 45 games (the first on January 6th), the result of a career-threatening herniated disk injury. With an extra 12 points (11 to tie Leafs at 99), the Kings would have had home ice in the Conference Finals. Those 39 Kings games Wayne missed included 5 ties, 3 one-goal losses and 2 two-goals losses when they gave up an empty net goal. He averaged 1.4 points a game that season. Oh, one more thing: Go Habs Go! 😉

To This day, I still feel it. Kerry Frazier was literally hated in Toronto. While I have moved on in life, I've come to accept it as one of those things that 'Happen'. Today being involved with the NHL, I've come to truly appreciate how Officials are more in tune with the game. With the amazing speed and skill of the players, it is NO easy job. The linesman and the Referee's are truly out there to be the best at their profession. And, yes, while some calls are missed (via the fans ability to view replays in Super Slow motion) I believe todays Officials do an overall fantastic job in a Thankless profession. They grow tough skin to reach the NHL level and are some of the best conditioned athletes out there. I truly enjoy the game more today as the overall level of play is amazing. "It's Always a Great Day for Hockey!" (Still holding out for a Leafs Cup final run)

The video should be called "When a fan base obsesses about one blown call for over thirty years and hence, plays victim for eternity because of said blown call." They didn't lose the series because of the blown call either, there was a whole other game to play. A real champion overcomes adversity. Wipe your tears and get over it. It's literally been decades. Also, it didn't matter. The Leafs were not beating Roy.

In a game loaded with missed calls, you can't blame one missed/blown call for changing the game. I mean I'd have given Gilmour 2 minutes for diving

if you look at it closely. its Gilmour's falling to the ice and laying there stretched out for a second or two is what gave the appearance of a faked hurt dive. I believe this was in Fraser's & the 2 linemen's minds initially in that moment which led to the no call
