All this guy does is watch and cherry-pick some highlights and Bable. I can tell he hasn't watched a single Flames game in the last several seasons because we do inject into our offence, our defence pinch constantly. This guy wants us to change the entire structure of the team for one player. When we don’t even have the personnel to play a east west system, and on top of that there isn’t a single team in the Western Conference that plays east west. You play east west in the west you’re not gonna win any games. Look at Huberdeau's body language when he’s on the ice. He doesn’t move his feet. He seems disinterested. He doesn’t have the self-esteem to make passes and gives the puck away a lot. Heuberdeau has had two explosive seasons in his career. Other than that he is a 70pt player. There is a reason why he didn't win any awards when he put up 115pts. The Flames haven't ruined Huberdeau's career, he has done that himself.

yea this has been my conclusion as well. He was an amazing playmaker and great at seeing the offensive zone. If he is doing this bad in Calgary suddenly, then clearly its because the organization doesnt care to adapt to Huberdeaus strengths, they are sternbrowing him into playing in a different environment. Its really just bad management. Probably the least of the blame should go to Huberdeau. I can't imagine how frustrated he must be.

Huberdeau is a creative play-maker and player. Florida was a creative, play making team. The Flames are a little more old-school. They have added creative playmakers to their lineup, recently more young rookies. Initially that would work, but they are adding creative players to a rigid, discipline focused system, expecting it to work. This is why it is known that they have the pieces to win, but are struggling because of this. A north/south system requires grit and speed. The flames have those factors, but when you add more creative players a conflict of interest begins, and wins become out of reach. This is why the flames are so inconsistent. They wan't to be multiple things at once, and that conflict of interest is killing their identity, and their chances of winning.

That doesn't explain why Matt Tkachuk did well in Calgary and Florida, or why Gaudreau is a puddle of slag in Columbus. I think it's something else, especially since this happened all through the Iginla era, the 90s, and even the 80s teams underachieved outside of '89 and arguably '86. (Don't "Edmonton was unfairly stacked" me, those Flames were widely acknowledged as the only other team that could match them on paper.) It's like there's something in the water up there that makes them...well, lazy, for lack of a better way to describe it.

@@BeastOfMetal1989 each player has their own way and culture of playing. Tkachuk adapts well, thanks to his father and brother. Gaudreau is used to having strong linemates, and in CBJ, all he really has at his level is Laine, if that at all. Calgary has had more players who struggle than succeed in the team. It's true. I think that can be credited to the culture and similiar coaching styles that they had. Badger Bob and Crispy were adaptive and creative, but they let the guys like Theo and Lanny strut their stuff. If Huberdeau was an elite player, he would be able to adapt his game to the system in Calgary. His success was not because of skill set but because of the system in Florida. That is quite evident at this point. The Flames panicked and tried to get a return on Tkachuk before losing him. Florida, being savvy, knew that Huberdeau was one-dimensional (he sits in the same spot waiting for the outlet pass) and were able to sell him at his peak.
@newttella1043
@newttella1043 7 ай бұрын
When Huberdeau first joined the Flames, he was racking up the assists...and the Flames were winning. But then the media and Sutter criticized him for not scoring goals of his own. So Huberdeau obediently tries to score more and the Flames started to lose, and those same folks were praising his new effort; very weird in my opinion. His ability to feed the puck shouldn't be a liability. I think he is conflicted in trying to make a poor system work versus supporting his line mates that have better scoring chances. I don't blame Huberdeau, to me he looks like he is trying too hard to please the coaches.

Flames brought in Kadri and Hubi, both are very creative players with very strong personalities....those two should be setting the style of play, not the yesterday coaches or the plodders who fill out the roster. The identity of the team changed, but the hold overs are too unaware to see that. This team needs a dif coach who recognizes the aptitudes, and sets fresh expectations up to use them. There are so many teams now in the league, but not talent, hockey IQ, or adaptability to go around.

Well I think you've made your point about Huberdeau being under-utilized or mired in a system that doesn't suit his talents. But I think the bigger point that is being missed here is that he is not an "elite" player. Huberdeau should not be number one on your team's depth chart. Huberdeau should not be making top 10 in the league money. In a 12 year career he's only put up "elite" numbers twice. To be considered "elite" (IMO) you need to do that consistently. For the majority of his career he's been getting paid for what he's going to do. And he hasn't really done it yet has he. Huberdeau's key to success in the NHL is for people to just stop calling him "elite" and recognize him for what he is...

Flames fan here I know Huber can be good. But that doesn't change the fact he lost his confidence They have moments of cohesion. They have shown they can do stuff, I've seen these flashes in games. But once the pressure is on, they just collapse inwards and forget the system. But weirdly enough...that Dallas game showed they can pull it together. Yeah we lost, but we actually put up a decent fight against a really good team so... Do I expect Huber to get 100 points this season? No. But do I think they can work through their issues...maybe. But I think they need to accept that maybe...they won't be a Cup team for a bit until they figure out their system, not trying to make the old one work.

I feel like he would be or IS frustrated with what he’s being assigned to or how he’s being told to play… he knows very well where he’s good, and this isn’t it. Everyone should have expected some drop-off in production after that career year 2 years ago, simply because it was far beyond anything he’s done in his career up to that point. A jump in production that large by a 28-29 year old is usually an outlier, after which there is a regression to the mean. But because people are reactionary fools (including GMs at times) current trends are usually assumed to be a new normal. With that being said, I wouldn’t have dreamed the drop-off would be THIS big for Huberdeau. I feel bad for him. Tough to get traded from a cup contending team after you’ve done everything the team could has asked of and more.

as a fan I feel bad for putting all the blame on him now I see it’s not all his fault .. mans just has no one to play with who can score , lindholm and kadri are non existent mangiapange needs to get it going more cause huby isn’t a score first guy we all know that but damn he might have too

Huberdeau has been a 60pt player throughout most of his career with 2 amazing seasons. Not a surprise that his production is what it is. Same with Kadri.

The past 5 years he's averaged a pt/gm or better but yeah, they paid for a 100+ pt/yr guy and that's not who he is. He's a good playmaker on a team that struggles to score. And as you said, they did the same with Kadri. Double burn.

Huberdeau is a thouroughbred and as such he needs to play with other thouroughbreds. For that reason, the flames should pursue Pinto from Ottawa in a trade. You can bet that they would make an explosive pair.

ignoring the money factor ( a huge task ofc, but go with me), but is Huberdeau's historic successful style a fit for the Sabres current system?

He’s always gonna be a playmaker at heart but sometimes u gotta switch it up, stay back after practice fire 100 pucks find your snipe switch to the wing and try your luck. It’s all a mental game.

A bit misleading at the beginning. If Huberdeau was signed after the 2022-2023 season there’s no way he gets that contract. The problem was that he was needing to be extended after a career year.

Funny - I called this the day the trade was made. Hubie's 115 point season was an ANOMALY - not the norm. He's about a point a game player through his whole career. Flames signed him to the contract they offered Tkachuk and as soon as they did I knew he was done for. That's a lot of pressure on a guy who is very talented but is not a driver and only drivers should make that kind of money. See another non-driver and ex-FLame Johnny G who I also predicted would fall off mightily in Columbus. Good luck even trying to trade that contract - he'll be bought out after year 5, maybe even year four, and that's when ..... finally... the Flames will tear down and rebuild. Though I'd do it NOW - as when your new barn is built you want a contending team in there, not a San Jose Shark team

They really ought to change their systems to fit the players they have, NOT try to force the players into a system they're not used to. I don't think a rebuild is necessary (with the names they have, they should be good enough for a WC spot, at least), but some changes to the coaching staff and tweaking their gameplan is an absolute MUST. These players are too good to be competing with the Sharks for the 1st overall pick :(

As a Flames fan I do believe Pelletier would’ve really helped this team and a defender like Kylington would’ve helped as well, but with defenders like Weegar, Andersson and Hanifin, they should be able to do these things. Guys like Magiapane, Lindholm, Dube, Kadri, Pelletier and Zary should be able to create things. The offence is so stale compared to the modern day NHL. Playing chip and chase hockey or north south isn’t good enough today. Conroy literally said he wanted a structured defensive system with creative, fast hockey in the offensive zone and they haven’t done it at all this year

Well said! The Flames were dependent on Gaudreau to break into the zone and set up shop, when he left, they resorted to just really basic, easily readable tactics, and/or simply tossing the puck into one of the corners. As a Flames fan, I watch most games, and we get so many more chances due to forechecking then we do trying to actually follow plays and designed tactics. It ain't working and I really hope they can refine it the next two months and come back after holiday break refreshed.

Essentially Calgary lost Tkachuk and Gaudreau but gained Huberdeau and Kadri. Of the four only Tkachuk has lived up to expectations. Calgary also has two disgruntled pending UFA’s in Lindholm and Hanifin. They are where the Jets were last year with Scheifele and Hellebuyck. The Dube situation now adds more drama to an, at best, disappointing season so far. I don’t envy rookie GM Craig Conroy, as he may be a one and done.

I’ve asked this before because I’m new and I haven’t seen a video like it before, but you could you explain a step by step tutorial on how to analyze a hockey game? What to look for? What type of systems are likely at play and how to determine if it’s good or not.

Huberdeau has to accept some responsibility for his underwhelming play in Calgary, for sure. However, as alluded to in this video, it’s evident that the culture and coaching in Calgary are too conservative for some offensively-minded and creatively gifted players. Management’s job is to identify not just good players, but in particular, good players with attributes & skills that mesh well with the team’s coaching tactics & philosophy. Putting Huberdeau on this Flames roster is kind of like trying to put your left shoe on your right foot. It’s still a shoe, so it kind of works, but it’s definitely not a great fit.
