This is what I keep saying to people, Kadri grew up in Ontario … Of course you’d want to stay on the Leafs as long as possible if they were near your childhood home and your family. But now that the Avs may not be able to afford him… He might just be willing to come back to Canada regardless of the team.

Man can you talk about Florida for more than 9 seconds. I get it, Calgary won the trade. Like everyone is sleeping on the fact Tkachuck is going to team full of pass 1st players and they just had a you know, decent, regular season. Huberdeau will be missed, but Florida finally gets some bite to their game. Last fun fact. Huberdeau only had 11 more points than Tkachuck last year and Tkachuck had more goals

If they can turn huberdeau and weeger into 1st rounders at the deadline, I’d still call that a good outcome for Calgary. They’re being forced into a rebuild by player exodus and GM managed to squeeze as much potential future value as possible out of it.

Unless the Panthers actually win the cup with Tkachuk, as of right now, this is a huge win for Calgary. They trade a player who basically had a gun to their head and refused to sign long term for a guy who had roughly the same point production last year, a top 4 D man, a prospect AND a 1st. That's ridiculous, given that Calgary should have been dealing from a position of weakness. Huberdeau isn't quite as gritty or as young as Tkachuk, but he's always much cheaper for next season. Even if Calgary ends up long term with just a top 4 D man and the 1st round pick turns into something really good, Calgary still does really, really well considering they had no other choice but to trade him. Granted, if Florida actually wins the Stanley Cup in the next few years, that changes, but in order to win this trade, that's basically what has to happen. Calgary as of today made off like bandits.

I love Steve trying to diversify his content to the nhl as whole rather than just focussing on the leafs and only leafs. I can see him being hockey’s version of what Stephan A Smith is to basketball; being incredibly bias to one team but still doing full coverage of the league as a whole. One thing that probably factors in that I’m not seeing discussed much is that Huberdeau is 29 and Tkachuk is only 24. So Florida signed a rising star that should be in his prime for most if not all of his long term deal. Huberdeau will also command a high price next year but any team who signs him will likely pay in the long term because he’ll be declining on the back end of that deal.

@SirPotato72
@SirPotato72 Жыл бұрын
@@RyanJ8 Ok, so about 4.5 years. The point remains. It’s possible Huberdeau stays close to the level he’s at into his mid 30s, but he’d be the exception to the rule. Sure there are players like Ovechkin that have kept up a high level for long time, but for every Ovechkin there are 10 other players (forwards, specifically) that drop off precipitously after age 30. The vast majority of forwards have their best years in their 20s. If they sign Huberdeau to a six year deal they’ll probably be significantly overpaying for 3.

As mentioned, this is a great trade IF Huberdeau and Weeger sign extensions in Calgary. If not, and Treliving can't replace them with comparable players, he's done. I'm not sure why high end players don't want to sign here, but the Flames need to do something to stop this exodus or all they'll become is a development team that trades their players once they're about to hit free agency.

Treliving has been done for 2+ years. No GM in the league has gotten the leash he's got. It's funny because I see the as a change in the NHL. Becoming more like NBA. Young superstars packing up bags for better cities. Austin Matthews, probably gone. Brady Thachuk, probably gone. McDavid & Leon, probably gone. Panarin left Columbus. No loyalty in it anymore which makes the draft irrelevant. Adam Fox would not play for small market. Look at one gen older. Crosby, Malkin, Marchand, Bergeron, Ovi, Kueznetov, Stamkos, Kane, Johnny Teows, etc all with the same teams.

Things to remember about resigning Huberdeau and Weegar: The cap is going to increase most likely, and Monahan + Lucic are expiring, adding an additional 11 million dollars in cap space to resign them both, while leaving behind the contracts Huberdeau and Weegar currently have, that's roughly an additional 20 million dollars in cap space just from these 4 players expiring, and 20 million dollars is MORE than enough to resign all of these guys with cap to spare.

I completely disagree as if neither Weegar or Huberdeau resign, then all teams lose. Both Huberdeau and Weegar could've told Florida that they had zero plans to resign, and that still wouldn't change that Florida should've gotten SOOOOOOOOOOO much more than just Tkachuk. Tkachuk was publicly known to be on the trade block, refusing to resign with Calgary. That wasn't the case for Huberdeau or Weegar. Florida gave up waaaay too much for Tkachuk, whether or not they resign with Calgary. Florida lost this trade majorly. Now we just wait to see if Calgary did too.

@CL who’s talking about being captain? FL gets peak years of Tkachuk with a locked in contract while Calgary gets a couple of rentals looking for bloated contracts for their declining years and a likely low first round pick 2 years from now. Probably a 50% chance the Calgary GM is gone before that draft pick is even made. Players of MK caliber win you Cups. He’s 24, not 30. Those years are incredibly valuable

@@wayne6777 You brought up some good points... but in my opinion... this only works if Flames dont make the playoffs. If they dont make it, then by all means we can trade them before the deadline to contending teams. But if Flames make the playoffs, I can't see Treliving trading Huberdeau and Weeger. He rather keep them to try and make a deep playoff run for his own team. The only problem with that is once playoffs are over it is done, they are free to go. So your only getting them for 1 year out of them. Unless you can still trade them after the playoffs, but im not sure i think contract is expired.

The thing is this was a win win for Treliving. If Calgary falls off he's probably sacked anyway. The new GM would have a pretty much clean slate to work with. There are a lot of expiring contracts in 2023 and 2024. They don't have that much cap space. They still need to sign Magiapanne and Kyllington.

I think there is a part of this trade that no one is talking about. Sutter. I have no doubt that both Gaudreau and MT were better players because they bought in to Sutter's style. To me the question is does Huberdeau and Weeger able to but into Sutter's system and show that improvement that he can bring to a player. If not then I think you have to move them at trade deadline. I think January or february will be the time we will know if they have bought in and want to stay.

This can't be seen as ANYTHING but a MASSIVE W for the Flames. Their backs were completely against the wall but Treliving pulled a rabbit out of a hat. With Gaudreau leaving and Tkachuk letting the Flames know he wasn't coming back, they had two options as a franchise: 1) Tear it down and rebuild or 2) Make some moves to try and stay a playoff team. Treliving managed to go for the hybrid option which I didn't even think was possible. He acquired a 1st line LW and a top pair dman (at the very worst a top 4 dman) so we can compete this year, while still acquiring assets for the future. Mark my words, either/both players are being signed to long term deals or either/both are being traded at the deadline for a boatload of assets which will undoubtedly include 1st round picks and top prospects. Treliving will not let either of them walk for nothing. I firmly believe the only reason Gaudreau walked for nothing, is because up until the very last second, Treliving really believed Gaudreau was indeed coming back. Gaudreau himself even mentioned that. So are the Flames worse off at forward this upcoming season compared to last season? Sure. We lost Gaudreau and Tkachuk. But getting Huberdeau back makes up for a lot of that loss. Are we better off on D? Yes. We essentially switched Gudbranson for Weegar. So are we a top team in the Pacific again? No. But are we still a playoff team, I say yes. But again, if there is even a slight indication that Huberdeau/Weegar are not resigning, they are both gone for the best available packages. I trust Treliving when it comes to getting value for assets that either don't fit well with the team, don't want to be here or their time is simply up with the Flames. See below for examples: Sven Baertschi --> Rasmus Andersson Dougie Hamilton, Adam Fox, Michael Ferland --> Elias Lindholm, Noah Hanifin James Neal --> Milan Lucic+3rd round pick Jiri Hudler --> 2nd round pick, 4th round pick Kris Russell --> 2nd round pick (Dillon Dube), Jyrki Jokipakka, Brett Pollock Curtis Glencross --> 2nd round pick, 3rd round pick

@@hockeycentral1149 No. If they don't sign extensions but the Flames TRADE them for huge returns, then it is still a massive W for CGY because Flames manage to maximize assets. They already have a 1st and a decent prospect from this trade. Imagine adding multiples 1sts, 2nds and prospects from trading both Huberdeau and Weegar. If both of them walk in free agency, then yes it's a W for Florida, but Treliving is not going to let it get to that point.

The first round pick and prospect in my eyes is just assurance that Calgary doesn't get fleeced a few years down the road should Huberdeau walk for nothing. If Huberdeau's contract of $5.9 mill was a year or two longer, there probably wouldn't be a first and prospect involved.

I think Calgary got a good haul , especially considering the circumstances, but next season is going to be a dangerous one. If they can lock up Huberdeau & Weeger long term early in the season? Great, they've won the trade. If they fall out of playoff contention, can't sign the new players, and have to trade them at the deadline? Not the worst, Calgary is now forced into a rebuild, but they should be able to land a big enough haul to at least make it a supercharged rebuild with a ton of assets, and might at least win the "trade tree" if not the initial trade itself. But if they are close but just miss the playoffs, or squeak in but get bounced early, and then Huberdeau and Weeger walk as UFAs? Absolute disaster- they've basically traded away Tkachuk for a low 1st and change, and Calgary has cemented a reputation as a franchise which can't attract or keep star players.

If you look at present situation, I think the Flames concern was that if Tkachuk wasn't going to sign, and if through arbitration, they probably spend 8+ million for one more year, so with that trade they require to pieces, since 1 piece walk out one them, Johnny Hockey. They have now a defense depth, where the can make hockey trade to add depth up front. I think if the Flames were signing anyone of the 2, it be Weeger. Huberdeu be a trade deadline decision. But out of a guy the was leave anyways, they got 1st and 3rd out of it, no matter what comes from the other outcome. Tkachuk wins and Florida looses, they got hole in backend and how are Florida to produce the offence need with hole in backend if their general of offense was traded to the Flames. The Atlantic is probably the most upgrade division, and I don't believe if Florida don't win over half of those comeback wins that they won last year if they're staring at playoff birth
