So I'm back here a year later rewatching this reaction to put me in a better mood. I unfortunately clicked on another reactor's reaction to this and didn't get long into it because they were laughing, pointing at & mocking everything in the first 10 mins I watched. I can understand it not being for everyone but that type of reaction is disrespectful and not entertaining in the slightest. This put me in better spirits.

I was a tour guide in Salem for 15 years. There is a lot of cheesy witchy stuff there. It is a very fun city. Just not in October, it is crazy busy and you really don't get to see much. May and September are the best times. Salem has come 180* since 1692. It is a very open and friendly city to all types. I am also the "child" in the pumpkin mask during Sarah's song. I was actually 17 at the time. Keep up the great work

Doug Jones, who played Billy, is an AMAZING special effects actor. He's played far too many great characters to name them all, but one of my favorites, aside from Billy, is The Faun and The Pale Man in Pan's Labrinth. It's a bit sad to me what happened to Dani's actress, Thora Birch. She was more than willing to reprise her role as an adult Dani in the sequel, but her schedule didn't work out because she was busy filming the new Wednesday (Addams) show in Europe at the same time the sequel was filming. And then she couldn't even finish filming *that* because she had an emergency in her family (I think maybe a death?) and had to rush back to the States anyway.

Fun fact: Thora Birch, the actress that plays Dani, also played the Whisperer, Gamma, in The Walking Dead. She's also gonna be in that Wednesday Addams show you mentioned at the beginning. Yeah Salem is very much centered around the Witch trials history and tourism but it's really beautiful and while there's a lot of touristy stuff to do, it somehow doesn't manage to FEEL touristy if that makes sense? Like it's not intrusive. You have to seek the touristy stuff out like the tours and museum and stuff. You could easily have just a nice time walking around Salem looking at all the cool shops and stuff without any of the historical elements. The tours are pretty varied too like there's the more historical ones, then there's ghost tours at night, and there's even one that takes you on a tour of the filming locations from this movie.

Yes. Salems identity is wrapped up in its history with the witch trials. Heres a few things nobody has mentioned yet. The local newspaper and the police cars all have witch logos on them. The high school football team is called the witches. There’s even an elementary school called witchcraft Heights. There are a few streets with the words witch or witchcraft in their names. Also the statue of Samantha Stephens from the old TV show ‘bewitched’ is in the town center. Lastly most of the magic and witch shops are open year-round even when tours stop during the colder months.

Warning: long and rambley. It's 420 somewhere. The acting is so good in this. Each and every actor understood the assignment. Thora Birch managing to keep up with Bette Midler?!? Jegus, at her age I couldn't keep up with Bill & Ted era Keanu Reeves. I don't know off the top of my head, but I think the compositing here is not that unusual by 90s standards. Low budget movies and TV, sure, of course you don't blow your budget on a good compositing job. The odder thing is seeing it here, in what would otherwise have been a direct-to-VHS Disney flick until Bette Midler got involved. Basically, my read is that Midler had the star power that Disney figured, hey, if we're blowing money on casting Bette Fucking Midler, who's a singing diva with a very dedicated fanbase that overlaps heavily with our unexpectedly profitable adult gay/camp/drag/transfem audience, let's actually budget to make it good and release it theatrically. I bet they were worried that the Disney Renaissance was going to crash and burn at some point, so they wanted to diversify their audience. Probably not far off from how they ended up funding and then buying Pixar. Anyways. Back to 90s compositing vs today's. I'm not sure I've seen a well-composited big budget film since Lord of the Rings, outside of directors with the clout to demand spending money and time on VFX that are good rather than flashy. Flashy VFX are more abundant now, I suspect, because filmmakers can get away with lazier (cheaper) matching on fast cuts. It's just how the brain's visual processing works, and fast cuts have been the "in" style since MTV raised a younger generation on them.
