I agree with Darcy. I believe Insight Editions is definitely directing the illustrators they hire to do pips. It is probably to save money on licensing fees and because it is a faster way of getting the artwork done. It seems Insight Edition is all about making money and putting in the least amount of time, effort, and resources into the products and it shows. People may complain about Llewellyn card stock but I give them props for giving artists and authors the time to create quality, full guidebooks and scenic pips. They do theme decks well and it is probably in large part due to the guidance of Barbara Moore, who was their Tarot Acquitions editor for many years. She knows Tarot so well and believes in delivering quality decks for readers. Unfortunately, as long as people continue settling for these pip decks and buying them in droves, I doubt Insight Editions will consider changing their formula. Unless maybe there is a change in management.

I have the Disney Villains and Nightmare Before Christmas decks and it frustrates me that they’re pips. For me it’s not so bad because I’m not a beginner but for someone who has just come to tarot it must be so annoying. The pips don’t always match what the cards should really represent. It just feels like the creators are being extremely lazy and they can’t be bothered because they know people will I buy it because it’s Disney

Couple questions: 1. Does every deck need to be accessible for beginners? 2. Do all readers have to get ‘hits’ from imagery in order to be considered valid readers? Or is that a very personal preference? 3. How are we all still surprised by insight editions decks slightly sucking? It sucks that they’ve got the license and THIS is what they’re doing with it. But it is what it is. It’s all about money.

This deck is totally worth just picking up as a collector and fan of the film. It's beautiful and the quality is there. I feel you though. Would've preferred illustrated Rider-Waite-Smith style minors.

I REALLY wish that insight editions would listen to all the constructive criticism about the pips because these decks are so full of potential, especially this one. Why make us wait for a hocus pocus inspired tarot deck only to have the majority of the cards look similar to each other? The pips don't reflect what the meanings are and it's frustrating.

The pips actually *do* represent the "meanings" (I prefer interpretations) but you do have to give them a little thought and check the guidebook. I have the nightmare before Christmas deck and I'm planning in my head, how I'm gonna modify it to add some keywords with a metalic pen. If I were more artistic I woukd consider adding in some more visuals in some instances... but I do think that the interpretations are there, sometimes you just have to stretch a bit more for them.

Sigh…thanks for the review Natasha! This kills me though lol, this is one of my favorite movies and pre-ordered this deck as soon as I saw it was coming. If I had been chosen to create a deck for this movie omg i would have combed through every detail of it and made sure it was the ultimate. The look and art approach of it is cool, very Disney which I like but the fact that there is a typo on the intro of the book shows you the lack of attention to detail that they paid to it. Pip decks are not my fave but they can be done waayy better especially with so many cool scenes & characters in this movie that could have represented the minors…in my opinion there was a huge missed opportunity sadly.

It seems like they take the easy way out and do as little as possible with the minor arcana. You can't get anything off the card itself, you need to know what each one means to be able to read them at all. The major arcana is great, the artwork is really good but there are many similarities in the naming and illustration of the suits to the Nightmare before Christmas deck. There really was so much more thought that could be put into all of these decks. My deck arrives tomorrow and a little sad about it, but still happy to have it in my collection.

This one deck that they wouldn't have to use pips ! The majors and art style is perfect. I've seen worst, like just 7 swords and no other illustrations. It's not a deep dive deck but, very fun ! It's so Iconic ! I have other decks higher on my list , but I'll eventually cave ! Thanks for the walk-though. Which character is my favorite ? I love them all, they were the perfect match. So happy the sequel is coming out, it was along time coming , and so happy they had enough sense not to recast, it just would be the same !

Unpopular opinion from a intermediate Hocus Pocus fan but I really don’t mind this one being a pip deck. To me they included a lot more than I expected. My only issue is that I know a lot will pick this up as their first deck and be lost like I know the meanings and couldn’t get anything off some of them

I love the look of the deck and I’ve been enjoying it but of course I agree that those pips missed the mark. I think the lightning and the pumpkins are cute and they look great in a spread so I’m not mad at those. The candles annoy me though lol. The thing that bugged me the most was that I really wished I could see more of the sisters on more of the cards. Even that cover image on a card would have been nice. Or them singing on stage or in the school. Oh well. Ce la vie I suppose Either way I’ve been using it and it’s been making me smile. So I guess I’ll hush lol.

I was really excited about this deck but I did hope it wasn't gonna turn out to be a pip deck... but here we are. The artwork in general is wonderful. But yeah, the pips are a deal breaker. If there were copyright issues, then wouldn't that also include the majors? To me, I think it's more about them just wanting to get the deck out there for ppl to purchase asap. Never mind if they don't like it because a lot of ppl don't want to go to the bother & expense of having to post it back to get a refund. Because often by the time you take into consideration the price of postage (at least over here anyway), the refund amount is almost not worth the hassle. It's still a preorder over here & I'm not prepared to wait till September to receive a standard pip deck. I'm also disappointed (stating the obvious here) & it's def a no for me. Thank you Natasha for reviewing this deck for us. 🙏👿🌙💡💞🌏

I was totally confused by the guidebook stating that the Potions were wands/fire and the candles were cups/water when I received mine too! 😂 The first thing I did was check the meanings in the guide book to confirm and sure enough candles were wands/fire and Potions were cups/water. One thing I liked that the guidebook did right was where it mentioned how the genders presented on the card's can represent anyone, and how a King card can represent a woman or non-binary person. That bit of inclusion and representation was really nice. Such a simple little thing but it felt really good to see it. Also, I loved the "incantations" just before each of the spreads. They are so good and immersive! One thing I didn't care for as much, besides the fact it's a pip deck, is that the book kind of implies that reversals are always negative and uprights are always positive, which may mislead a new reader. But at least they'll have the book to double check the meanings. Like, I'm pretty sure the 3 of Lightning/Swords is a "bad" card when it's upright most of the time. Ultimately I felt the same as you about the deck. I feel it could have been so much better but I'm happy with what it wound up being and I'm really looking forward to using it. The minors are really pretty for what they are. There's a book that is supposed to be really awesome for learning Tarot De Marseille (traditional pip decks) called Read Like the Devil and this deck has inspired me to make plans to pick it up and learn more about working with this sort of deck. But I do wish it had been more of a Rider-Waite-Smith deck because this IP had so much potential for that!

As it is too complicated for viewers to understand and beginners who want to learn tarot. I’ve seen a few complaints about the pip deck, doesn’t bother me in the slightest personally, I’ve been reading tarot for over 20 years now, I treat each deck I own individually and use them each for specific types of readings. I’ll definitely be buying this deck for Samhain, I immediately connected with the cards would love to read the guide book.

Insight Editions is only going to make pip decks. I've pre-ordered the Stranger Things tarot knowing full well it'll be pips, but I love the show too much to care. I feel like at this point expecting anything else from this company is just setting yourself up to be disappointed.

As much as I love Hocus Pocus and think the art is pretty in the deck I don't think I'll buy it 😅 I already have the Disney Villians Deck and I think that's enough for me as far as Insight Editions is concerned. I already have enough pip decks as is, that I barely use since I prefer my fully illustrated decks. If they release non pip deck in the future I might reconsider buying from them.

okay… so for me, this is obviously not as good as the disney villains. however, it is better than the labyrinth and alice in wonderland. and i can see where in some cards, a good attempt was made. in the potions suit, for example: in the two of potions, i viewed it as two elements coming together to create something new. and it took me a second to recognize just what the six of potions is alluding to, which is a memory. specifically it is alluding to the moment when winifred is trying to remember the ingredients with mary. almost instantly, sarah recalls the correct ingredient (dead man’s toes), while winifred and mary ignore/shush her and go down a very incorrect list, ending with a dead man’s chungs. so… yeah. a LOT are phoned in, but in some cases like the 6ofP, once you make the connection, it makes more sense.

I really find it infuriating when corporations take the tarot for profit and don't even make an effort to do it justice, decks based around movies and series can easily make beautiful and classic decks full of creative images but instead they sell the tarot soul and create decks with lazy, limited pips that don't even attempt to align with the minor arcana, the suits and meanings. Game of thrones tarot is a great example of a deck around a series that is well made, well studied and well aligned with the characters and archetypes in tarot, for this Hocus Pocus tarot deck I would have loved to have loved it, but the name changes of the suits and some major arcana, the lazy rushed-out pips & cardstock cheapens the whole project and make it feel like a cash grab, insulting the spirit and intelligence of tarot readers.

Honestly, I'm so sad about this deck because I LOVE Hocus Pocus the movie! It wasn't just you not getting the intuitive hits and struggling to discern the energies of the cards in the minors (aces through 10s). For the most part, the courts were ok but the rest of the minors looks very disappointing and frustrating. I also didn't like who they chose for the HP. I feel like it should have been Allison for the HP tbh. It also seems to me that the creator of this deck doesn't have a strong grasp on the tarot's system and that shows with the minor arcana. I had such hopes for this deck because I love the movie (my fav witchy movie) but sadly, this deck looks like a disappointment to me and therefore it's a sad and hard pass for me. I wanted to get this so badly but its just too disappointing to buy. I recently got the Supernatural tarot by Minerva seagle and it was amazing despite having just a few pips in the minors. But you can tell she really put effort into that deck. Hocus Pocus Tarot is obviously rushed and its a let down to all us major fans of the movie. Thank you for this flip through though.

I agree that I woukd like these decks to be more illustrative. But I'm starting to get a little bit annoyed by the automatic assumption that a pip deck is a *lesser deck*-- tarot decks were pip decks for hundreds of years. They are not inferior to scenic decks. It's one thing to have a preference but saying things that are so disparaging of pip decks as I see in a lot ofcomments, is not stating a preference.

For so long I wanted and waited for a Hocus Pocus Tarot deck. And now with it finally a reality, I have to say I’m super disappointed after watching this. Like many others and yourself have stated. The cards are just so…not hitting the mark and don’t make sense at times. I’m not sure if I’ll buy this deck now. If I do, I most likely will not be using it for legit readings.

I love Hocus Pocus, but I’m very disappointed in this deck. The back is beautiful, the packaging is nice, the major arcana is nice I like that but it’s not worth my money cause I just don’t like the deck style and I was really excited about purchasing this deck. As disappointed as I am in the walkthrough and the minors…..I still have a copy on the way because Hocus Pocus!! I have other pip decks that cost quite a bit more than this deck, and they read just fine for me, so I expect that this deck will, too. Again, disappointed in some of the artistic choices but I don’t care 😂

I have this deck! I love it, but I am disappointed with two things sadly. One, the pips, and two, the guidebook doesn't say which ones are what suits so I'm a little confused sadly.
