Learn more about diatonic chords at Hoffman Academy: www.hoffmanaca...
Today we are going to learn about diatonic chords, and how to build a chord progression,
You are already very familiar with some diatonic chords even though we've never called them by that name. “Diatonic” is just a fancy word that means belonging to a particular key.
For example, let's say we are in the key of C major. The C major scale has the notes C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and C. Each of those is called a pitch, and each of those pitches is diatonic in the key of C.

amazing work, mr hoffman, usually students learn about this stuff only after 6-8 years of piano ( if at all!). I like how you combine both classical and pop music from early stages on. keep it up, mate! :)

Thank you for making videos to teach us, I do need some helpful advice though if you can please help. How many weeks should I spend practicing diatonic chords of each key signature before moving on to the next (practicing everyday)?
@Hoffmanacademy
@Hoffmanacademy Жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for your question. There is no set amount of weeks to practice this - I suggest practicing this until it feels second nature, but you can still move on to something else and keep revisiting this exercise to keep it fresh. Remember that when a skill is not revisited, that skill can be forgotten. Happy playing and have fun!

A big thank you. i found that a good way to think about it is thinking the tonic to be 8 instead of 1. (of course its the same note, but subtracting 2 from 8 makes more sense to me :).

Thank you so much for your well organized and well visualized lesson on diatomic chords. I’m sharing it with several of my early theory and piano students for reinforcement. Unfortunately, you make a significant error at 9:45. I’m sure you can figure out what it is, but so others may understand this, you have conflated interceding pitches with half steps.. they half step is the distance from one chromatic pitch to an adjacent chromatic pitch. There are four half steps in a major third, not three: between C and E for instance, and three half steps in a minor third, not two:. From E to G, for instance. I would urge you to modify your video for correctness in the spirit of minimizing confusion in early students. All the best, and thanks again for your post on KZbin. Tom Stacy

Hi Tom, thanks for your thoughtful comment! You are absolutely right that the interval of a major third is equal to the distance of 4 half-steps, and a minor 3rd is 3 half-steps. In this video, I tried to emphasize that I was talking about the number of "keys in between" each of the 3 pitches of a major triad, which I have found to be a very simple and visual way for students to quickly see what quality of chord they are playing. As you pointed out, "keys in between" is not the same as the interval itself, so I appreciate you calling our attention to this distinction!

Hello: Thanks to your teaching I have learned the ii V I Progression. I would like to know if you can provide us amateur musicians with the ii V I Chromatic Progression. We are in the C Major Scale we want to go to the F Note, however, we want to go there chromatically by the ii V I Progression in the C Major Scale. Please let me know if you have such a challenge.
