With my magnacut deka, I got through about 640 ft of cardboard on 1 inch sections of blade at 15 dps, both with a very coarse and a polished edge before it stopped slicing printer paper. I'm happy with the heat treatment so far. My 20cv deka tested the same way got about 480 ft.

I have four DULO knives in K390. I never had an issue with dulling, in fact, just the opposite. I butchered a hog with my laminated Pukko in K390 and still hair poppin sharp at the end. Hog chest plate is a true test of a good knife. Always been impressed with K490. I have several Magnacut knives and same deal. Use my BGM Kephart for daily carry and only stropped it once this year. Obviously geometry and heat treat are paramount.

Think i'll need some of that japanese K390, getting the job done on something like that turf is really were its at for me, to work i bring a small piece of leather with some metal polishing compound on it and i can pretty much bring back any edge with it so it doesn't matter too much if i can cut 100 or 500ft of cardboard, but often enough something comes up that'll have most steels fail before i'm even done making that one cut. So far my only solution is Maxamet, or geometry, i've noticed something like a 4 Max Scout or thick fixed blade won't care either, but its not exactly the perfect solution for the other day to day tasks.

I don’t like polymer handles because of the way it feels, I didn’t like the way my first Glock felt either, but hogue definitely knows what they’re doing with polymers. I definitely trust it. Polymer definitely seems to hold up on guns in general as well. Just like my glocks I’ve gotten use to the feel of the Deka also.
@j.w.greenbaum2 жыл бұрын
As a fellow Glock owner and someone who has a set of Hogue polymer (not rubber) 1911 grips, which honestly feel pretty similar, would you say it’s outright similar to Glock grips? If so, I’d certainly take it over Benchmade Grivory or Spyderco FRN. Hogue itself has said the feel would be comparable to its polymer grips, but I was wondering if that was “leading advertising” or they actually did. If the latter, Benchmade better up its game on the Bugout.
@orendz77402 жыл бұрын
@@j.w.greenbaum the Glock grips don’t bother me at all and yeah I would say it does feel a lot like my Glock grips. That’s what the Deka reminded me of when I first unzipped the pouch and held it. Like I said earlier, I didn’t like the way my Glocks felt at first either, but now with both the Glock and Deka I’m ok with it and happy and trust both.
@j.w.greenbaum2 жыл бұрын
@@orendz7740 The reply is much appreciated! You’ve just sold me on a Magnacut Deka! My G17’s grips felt…different to me at first, but not really bothersome. Certainly not something I’d compare to Benchmade’s Grivory or Spyderco FRN, which can in some cases be a little annoying. My G17 isn’t annoying and wasn’t when I got it. Just…different.
@orendz77402 жыл бұрын
@@j.w.greenbaum yeah that’s how I felt too. When using the Deka I don’t feel any, if at all, flex to the polymer. You might if you were using the knife under hard use, but I don’t think it would be much especially using the knife as it was designed to being used. My opinion only is the Deka really isn’t a hard use knife so no problems for me. I’m glad I could help my friend. Hope you enjoy it!

@ejesoriginal2 жыл бұрын
I really think the Hogue blade geometry of their interpretation of the Wharncliffe is good at only specific things and the better all-around/everyday blade is their clip point. You are absolutely correct. After carrying the Deka (clip point) for a month, I agree with your comments on the clip. I like how low it carries, but it just feels flimsy and not secure for some reason. The clip point has been pretty impressive to me so far.

The stain resistance and edge retention is almost identical. They use the exact same heat treat
@barkingspider2007 Жыл бұрын
I have had good experience with both the Japan K390 and the USA made. You might have just got a poor heat treatment on the Para 3. Give the USA made K390 another go, you might be in for a treat. Thanks for the video. : )
@beyproctor76732 жыл бұрын
Funny you noticed that weird wavy pattern on the bevel of your Para3. My Para3 Maxamet had a wavy appearance to the bevel. It was perfectly even all the way along it and I don’t know why. What I do know is it gay WAY sharper after I touched up the edge on some DMT plates. Same here with the edge on my Hogue RSK knives. Both of them had edges were that were screaming sharp from the factory! I have since sharpened the mini RSK again because of the Sheetrock cutting.
@CNYKnifeNerd2 жыл бұрын
That's caused by belt/wheel chatter, and it's gotten really bad recently. It's almost purely a cosmetic issue though, and factory edges suck even when they're pretty.

I also hate the clip on my magnacut Deka. I ordered a Civivi clip on Amazon for five bucks. Just tried it on my Deka. It fits perfectly and seems to work better so far. No hot spots, & just barely fits all the way over my jeans, unlike the original clip. The clip screws are too tall.

I have been watching some other 'reviewers" posts. I now understand your opinion of them. They are usually very shallow first impressions...that's about all you get.
@dylanemeraldgrey2 жыл бұрын
I think I remember BBB saying the sweet spot for magnacut was around 62. He did testing for the inventor of magnacut so...(Hope I'm remembering right, but I do remember being surprised it was lower than most super steels.) If a lot of manufacturers start using magnacut we'll be probably be able to zero in on who is doing it well pretty quickly, but when you like the feel of the cut and it seems to be doing the job for a good long while, that's usually a pretty good sign.
@optimuscrime6082 жыл бұрын

Thanks for the video. I'm seriously surprised Golden would heat treat softer than Seki. I've got something like 4 Delica's in the Wharnie style including the K390 and the 20cv and there's definitely something about that edge geometry that makes them incredible cutters. I have the Hogue on order (Wharnie version, I'm a Wharnie slut I guess) so I will be watching to see how you're testing on that progresses. Love the channel!

I know this is an old video which I actually think I saw when you came out with it, but it popped up on my feed. it is disappointing I got a PM2 in M4 that's treated really low, it Will not take an edge and then when you finally get an edge on it, it gets dull literally after a couple cuts. Compared to my M4 shaman which will hold an edge forever

Thanks heaps for the quick thoughts on the Deka. I just purchased one, because I test knives on a used ship rope and a MagnaCut Mule just basically destroyed my test in the best way haha! I missed the Spyderco Mules, but purchased a Deka, and have been wondering about the heat treat. I totally agree with you that 61-63 HRC is fine (if this was 2005 we'd be pooping our pants to have a steel that hard, we're just snobs now, lol) and the added toughness of lower HRC can actually help edge stability some tasks as long as the heat treatment didn't ruin the microstructure somehow. I'm more of a sharpener than a dedicated EDC guy, but your video was exactly what I needed to know. Thanks. I'll link my video of MagnaCut destroying the rope which destroys everything else, if you want a good laugh: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imLaaHyHeZipqLM
