@@G-man_the-cyber-guy Well, yeah. But the thing that strikes me about the way he's approached this game is that he's _instantly_ tried to break it, as opposed to learning how he's "supposed" to play. It's an impulse that has doubtless served him well in his career (you're not going to find a system's vulnerabilities by doing what you're supposed to), but that has also made his experience in this game somewhat harder than it needed to be in places, by slowing down his progression and understanding. It's not a criticism; I find it fascinating to see how Thor looks at stuff.

"hints" to the player should be vague and direct you to a "compendium" of sorts in the menu. For the devils snare hint the character could say something like "I believe this is devils snare, I remember Ms Garlick (herbology teacher) talking about this. Then you could access a compendium of the different flora and fauna in the game from the menu. It could say in there that it doesn't care for bright light. So you get a breadcrumb, but it's up to the player how far they choose to follow it. The initial "hint" should also happen after the player has been in the area and potentially take damage from the flora or fauna a few times.

rpgs are rarely balanced tbh, its usually up to the player as whether they want to play for a specific playstyle. Avada Kedavra has a long cooldown but it is OP, because its OP in the harry potter universe aswell - balance doesnt really matter in single player games as long as it doesnt make the experience boring or too hard

8:46:56 likely to just be stagnant air trapping a small amount of gasses. Not enough to be extremely detrimental nor repeatedly noticeable, but enough that stumbling into pockets of it gets you hit with symptoms similar to CO2. Burning sage likely wasn't an 'anti-evil' type thing and more like the trace amounts of gasses either got burnt, displaced by the smoke, or was cleared up with a more methodical and less 'normal' movement which encouraged it to move toward windows, mix/dilute with surrounding air, and what not. All three together would deal with a vast range of issues related to funky air.

As someone who played it on PlayStation, sadly, the flying sucks on controller just as hard. Same problem with not being able to look above or below yourself. And it was worse before an update, where looking left and right also affected your steering. On my second playthrough I didn't do any of the follow-up broom upgrades besides the first that is mandatory, because that horrendous steering makes those races rage inducingly frustrating. On another note, the developer just announced that they'll bring the PS-exclusive (large) side quest to other platforms, basically for their 1-year anniversary. They also said they would have some additional content, but didn't go into details. Anyway, if you want to play a really cool horror quest, you might want to play it again after the update. The quest contains.... mannequins 😈

Theoretically the polyjuice potion doesn't actually change your genetics since the voice doesn't change, it's just a morphing of features. If it did, you could turn muggles into wizards temporarily

To be honest, when I played for the first time (and everytime after,) I honestly tune out my main characters voice when they're giving me hints. I don't know but like I hyperfocus when solving the puzzles, so I just ignore their vocal hints. If I'm really stuck and can't figure it out, that's when I listen. I understand it should've been a toggle, but I think it's not so shitty. I've watched so many (truly very many) playthroughs of this game and everyone appreciates the hints as far as I've seen. There are even some who listen to the hint over and over again and still cannot get through the level. Most I've seen is that people just want to get through as smoothly as possible, especially with main quests, and like the hints so they can progress through the story quicker. I also feel like some streamers don't want to spend so much time stuck in one puzzle/room and just want to get through it quickly. My guess is they (Hogwarts Legacy team) went through aggressive playtesting and found that a lot of people got stuck on certain puzzles and thought they needed to help the average player along. But yeah, all that said, I understand that it needs to have a toggle anyway for those who don't need it.

You should, as a game designer, want to push your player at least just slightly so they come out of each puzzle or combat potentially better. A puzzle designer should want the person to struggle to get that ah-ha! moment and feel the rush of endorphins. They will learn how to solve things better and have less trouble in the future. A hint system like this removes the person from learning, wanting to force that on your player removes a lot of growth from them and they won't improve. How can they go into the next game without a hint system (assuming the game is harder) if they haven't improved as a gamer?

I totally agree about the polyjuice species thing. Cause I'm sorry if you drink a potion and suddenly you have whiskers and a full body of fur than you've begun to change species. But maybe they've not discovered that since this is like 100 or so years prior

I look at it like, even if you feel the characteristics are enough to quantify a species change, it's not a _successful_ species change. Drink a poly with a cat hair and you'll never turn into a cat. Remember this question is from a wizard's perspective. So, like, you might think a human getting some whiskers is enough to qualify as no longer human, but if you live in a world where magic exists, where there are various naturally occurring shapeshifters, you probably need a more complete change to qualify as a species overwrite.

Exactly, begun, not a full species change its not successful is the point, Hermione did not *become* a cat, she gained the features of a cat, like you do not become another person, you gain all their features, she didnt shrink down into a fluffy housecat and stop being able to talk, just grew whiskers and fur, hence why they say it can be dangerous because theres no use for just gaining a few features and depending on what they are could injure you

I dont mind the character providing some sort of deliberately vague hint AFTER I've spent some time trying to figure it out myself...when they do it as soon as I come across the puzzle its annoying. That said did not have any issues at all with the character making comments about the demiguise statue/s being close by, was very helpful in finding them all.

JK also talks about how she wanted Harry and Hermione to get together and has been laughed out of fan sites for not knowing anything when they've gone anonymous. 😅 It's not her world anymore, regardless of what she says now. The fact you can change your gender in game and the diverse representation of gender presentation included speaks volumes. Tbhwy, they almost went out of their way to include that, I can't recall being able to change so much without switching characters in another game.

Downside to playing on the PC seems to be the tight UI screen. I was practically SCREAMING at my screen (while on a treadmill, so picture how silly that must've looked) when Thor couldn't see the other plant store in the northwest. But then, I played this game months after he did, and I have a really big screen for my PS5. I remember being able to find it clearly (though I didn't consider it interesting until I walked near it), so the fact it just...hides behid the map icon? Ugh. Avalanche should be damned proud of themselves: They made a game some people can play for 10 hours and still enjoy every minute! I know I did (I max out at 3hr a session tho). I'm sure the sequel will fix some of the things Thor mentioned, since I've heard those same complaints elsewhere (and had myself). This was their first RPG, and they flexed their muscles. Now they get to build their strengths.

The money this games makes goes to a person who uses it to fund political campaigns in the UK which for example prevent trans people from getting surgery when they need it. I don't think people who play this game are transphobic, but I do think there is no way to not take a stance. If you do play this game, that's what you're monetarily supporting. The hostility from parts from the trans community stems from horrid experiences at the hand of laws and the medical system. Not that that excuses toxic behaviour, but I can imagine it being pretty disheartening seeing so many people give more of a shit about 50 hours of entertainment than the lives of hundreds of thousands of people.

Yup and pirating it screws over the devs who spent so much time working on it. So it's rough either way which is a shame because even though JK Rowling is a gross human being the world they built is fantastic. It kind of reminds me of Lovecraft. The man is a disgusting racist but the books he wrote spawned an entirely new genre of horror which has given birth to tons of media that I personally love. The good news though is that this game will likely stay on the market even after Rowling kicks the bucket, so those who would like to play it but don't want to support Rowling could just wait until they kick the bucket. Anyways, I'm not one to police people on the games they want to play. So either way I'm not judging anyone that pays for the game and plays it. Games are meant to be played and enjoyed after all.

I agree - the character constantly talking was just annoying. The flying was clunky. and the extra stuff got a bit grindy towards the end. Overall, it was good, but those items just took some of the "joy" out of the game.

the whole hint thing i agree with you on. coming from a day where you were the lucky kid on the block if you had the players hand book. solving a challenging puzzle without help is just as rewarding as killing the big bad at the end of the game.
