The replacement of ssembly line was realized upon pressure of trade unions. Unit costs were higher of course. When trade union movement has lost power in Europe, Volvo turned back to assembly line.

Yes high employment and powerful unions equated to high absenteeism and turnover so Volvo had to offer better work conditions along with higher pay. Good for low volume highly customised bespoke models but not for high volume mass production. The factory closed in 1994
