Carbon plates seem to be misunderstood most of the time. Every carbon plate or flange in a shoe is supposed to stabilize the squishy foam. No one is putting enough pressure into the plate to be able to bend or spring it forward. The purpose is to engage as much foam as possible and keep somewhat of a stable platform. When you land on the plates, it spreads the pressure out on top of more foam rather than just the spot that you're landing on. The foam contains almost all of the efficiency gain, not the plates. That "spring" forward that we feel in some shoes and not other is the foam and geometry working in tandem, not the plate unloading.

For me as a 210lb runner i think this shoe is the best option on the market now for longer slower efforts as I build up my aerobic base and train towards a full marathon. It saves my body as a bigger runner. I absolutely love the superblast as well but not as much for slower paces. Just a reminder that I've had to learn the hard way, don't look to people who review shoes that aren't built like yourself. Kofuzi does great reviews but i realized most of the time it doesn't apply to my experience in a shoe. When you're over 200lbs your going to compress that cushion and plate much differently and get a completely different experience that runners who are 170lbs or less. I'm thankful Hoka made this shoe the way they did, I am training for a marathon with this shoe now.

I agree! i started getting into running at 410 lbs. i like his reviews a lot. but some stuff i cant relate to because of the fact that im really slow and big! for me "picking up the pace" is very very slow for a lot of runners. but this shoe with the carbon plate definitely gives me some bounce compared to other max cushioners i wear!

I love your review, detailed and informative. I've been running in the skyward x all summer while marathon training. In short, I think this is the best all-around shoe I've ever used. I'm a 2:55 marathoner at 155 lbs. Switching from bondi X, I love the responsiveness of this shoe and the way it really rolls. This shoe always feels good, and I run fast in them frequently, tempo runs, longruns with tempo finishes. The shoes are awesome and keep me feeling fresh. They have the cushion without the mush.

I have osteoarthritis in my knee and wear cushioned shoes to minimize pain(Invincible, SC comp, addizero, fresh foam more, etc). I recently did six pain free miles in the Skyward X and had no after run soreness. Not as cushy as the invincible, and much more stable underfoot than the adidas. The Bondi was ok in terms of residual knee pain, but the skyward has that same firm feeling and is softer on the joints. If you were not told (or looked at) the height of the shoe, you wouldn’t really notice.

I have tried almost any shoe over the past years. For slower, heavier runners like myself (190cm, 90kg, pace 6 p km) this shoe is it. This is a supershoe not for all those well trained athletes, but for the not so well trained long way to go-dudes. It is bouncier than Nike‘s Invicibles, better leg saving than NB‘s More. It is the shoe that HOKA always should have been like but never was before.

The first test run on this shoe ended up being an impromptu full 42.2klm after-work mid-week marathon. As someone who regularly runs over 100klm per week, i needed a shoe to save my legs and this was the only thing on the market. ironically the shoe before this was the new Balance SC trainer v2, i had to return it because the front foot was not stable enough leaning inward. the Hoka works for what it is made for and the soul feels amazing, the heel lock is not great so it puts extra pressure on the upper lacers. i wish it had an 8mm drop. it feels like a super premium version of the more v4, the more v4 had a more comfortable upper but this sole is light years ahead. The out sole is not good, it is sum how both slippery in the rain and wears out fast (normally it is one or the other) complete opposite of the perfect continental rubber of the Adios Pro 3. should you buy, yes i do not regret this purchase and after 200klm it is a pleasure to lace up.

I felt the Skyward X had a really pleasant bounciness to it when I tried it. The price tag is just a huge hurdle though. It’s also just a lot of shoe under foot. In any event, it’s nice that Hoka is using better foams across their line. The super critical eva in this and the Mach 6 is really nice.

I think the price is the tough pill to swallow. I don't get my pair until tomorrow, but comments give me the impression that this is a fantastic easy/recovery day shoe for heavier runners. $225 for a shoe that fills a role that most dow with a $160 shoe is tough, but if it allows for more miles with fewer injuries, I'm down to pay $225. I'm between 210 and 215 pounds and in great shape (former football player), but I've quickly learned that fitness has little to do with the pounding on the knees.

In the beginning, you always have a disclaimer of how you got the shoe. A better disclaimer is to tell us your age, height, and weight so we know if everything your saying is accurate for the viewer or not. You analysis of this shoe is completely different from larger runners like myself (240 lb powerlifter who recently got into running). At this point, most of your newer viewers probably aren't even fast enough for a race day shoe. I did a race last week and saw ALOT of people wearing the skyward x for race day. A lot of us are old and just want to be healthy and not hurt our legs. Maybe in each review you can do a "big guy" analysis.
@kofuzi2 ай бұрын
I think you misunderstand what a disclaimer is, but I understand what you are saying. I also think stating age and weight would be less helpful than stating footstrike, typical surfaces run, and weekly mileage. I'm pretty sure I have a good sense of when a shoe is good for my bigger and taller friends, and I don't recall if I specifically mentioned that with this review. but I tend not to go out of my way to mention when a shoe would be good for a runner who is not me. It is literally impossible for me to have anything more than a hypothesis in that regard. I recommend Drew from Wear Testers and Herm from Herm Runs on IG for that kind of thing. Martellus Evans is also a good source.
@sean62222 ай бұрын
@@kofuzi I appreciate the response. I agree that there isn't a way for you to experience being taller and heavier. You can talk about footstrike and foams all day, but you will never understand what it feels like to be 240 lbs running a 5+ hour marathon. Because of this, I have to take everything with a grain of salt. It is what it is. I'll look into those other accounts for big guy experiences.

Sometimes they take big risks and it works, like with the Cielo X1. Other times, it doesn’t, like with the Skyward colorway
