Just watched a handful of your reviews. Love your no BS commentary. Been running the Torrent 1 & 2 for three years now, in tandem with other trail runners along the way. Just bought another pair (4th pair so far). To date it’s my go to mountain runner. For context I live in Sedona and log ~25 miles/6k feet of gain a week. Super technical, sharp rock ascents mostly. Grip and stability are tier 1. Marginally better than the Speedgoat 5 (which I run from time to time). Lifespan for the Torrent is closer to 400 miles on my terrain. Lug depth is 5mm. But for only $120, it’s got to be the best package on the market - certainly for my needs. Only thing that could really make this thing any better, would be BOA. Appreciate the reviews. 🎉🤘🏼

I LOVE the Torrents! I probably wouldn't want to do anything longer than 15 miles in them. I ran a pretty rocky trail race and my feet were beat up by mile 20 and I changed shoes about that time. But anything less than that, they are just so much fun. Great rubber that will stick and that light shoe just wants to fly. Great review, Seth!
@paddywiggle4 жыл бұрын
I just got these shoes. I love them. They are a "medium" cushion, but to be honest, with my light frame they have plenty of cushion. No foot problems. They give you such pull going up hills and confidence going down the hills. Definitely recommend!
@g742233 жыл бұрын
I've done over 500 miles in my original torrents. All of those miles on really rugged White Mountains NH trails. They held up really well and the traction in all conditions, even snow, was amazing. I haven't tried the Torrent 2 but will be getting a pair soon!
@GeesDrive3 жыл бұрын
I bought the HT2 and i've got to agree. On the face of it it's nothing special but once you get moving it's superb. We have lots of rain in the UK and sticky mud and the deep lugs cope with pretty much all conditions and give you lots of confidence. The upper does feel a little over-padded but that makes sense once you get out there in the tough stuff. A truly fantastic trail shoe and only very minor gripe is it can be a little bit noisy on the road. For context I was coming from the Nike Pegasus 26 Trail and my road shoe are the Turbo 2's/Endorphin speed 2s.

Great review again, thanks! I got the Torrent 1 and the Evo Speedgoat at the same time last year. Exactly the same weight, but the Torrent felt faster and more exciting. Initially I loved it much more. Until I ran on mountain trails and had to descend... The lockdown simply wasn’t good enough to prevent my feet from slipping forward a bit, resulting in very painful toes. The Evo Speedgoat shined here! Now, after about 400 km in the Torrent the midsole starts to feel less cushioned, reducing the comfort quite a bit. I find that pretty fast... Again: the Evo Speedgoat outperforms the Torrent here. So long story short: I initially loved the Torrent 1, but got more mixed feelings logging more miles in it. I curious whether others have similar experiences and whether the Torrent 2 solves these ‘problems’!
@patrickredding76744 жыл бұрын
Thank you! This is exactly the kind of comparison that I was looking for!!! (I find the EVO Speedgoat has a better overall upper, more form fitting, and I prefer the stretchy laces to the stiff ones of the Torrent).

i think the difference in weight goes to show that despite minor differences the overall structure of the shoe is what matters. there’s an old piece of wisdom that circulates through running stores: if the shoe feels lighter than another, it just fits better. it’s really hard to see minor things like a few tenths of an ounce or a few millimeters can make such a big difference.

That Vibram outsole bumps up the price on the EVO. This Torrent 2 is a good bang for your buck shoe.
@eryrirunner74264 жыл бұрын
Looks like another good Torrent. I had two pairs of the first version; first shoe lasted 750km, all in the rough mountains of North West Wales here in UK which eat shoes for breakfast! Second pair didn't last as long for some reason. I loved the Torrent and it always felt very stable for my feet but the outsole I would not class as 'sticky', at least on damp North Walian rock! I always thought that a good upgrade to this shoe for a little extra stickiness would be a Vibram outsole, but of course that would put the cost up. However, the lug depth I find is about right, which I think was 5mm on first version. . From what you've said Seth, I'd say the shoe is almost identical apart from changes to the upper and those laces remain super-strong! Should add I've ran a couple of ultras in the first version and they felt fine. Looking forward to actually be able to get out running again, due to a bad ankle sprain in February which is taking a long time to heal :( . Cheers for the great initial review, Seth :) > P.S what do you reckon to the Jawz? Did they turn your feet blue? ;)

My two cents- good shoe, some stability decent cushion not much log depth, slippery in the mud (not much rock protection either), much better upper than 4s, ok lock, bit stiff ride, great for mixed surfaces and light non technical trails. Bit heavy in GTX iteration, bit stiffer than regular one but repels water well. I would use it as daily trainer, wouldn’t use it for longer trails, nor even more than 90 minutes on asphalt. Also it has Wide version.

Great review on the Torrent 2! I've been running in the first iteration and LOVED it until I ran a 50k in it. It simply did not have the cushion I needed to go above 20 miles. I felt an indication of that in training but decided to take the shoe all the way. After that race, I bought the EVO Speedgoat and have been very happy using that for longer miles. I still love the Torrent (and bought a second pair to replace my other ones), but it's reserved for shorter, faster efforts. Speedgoat all the way for long runs!

I’m wrapping up on my Hoka Torrents at about 450 miles. Yesterday I started my run in the Torrents and they definitely have lost the cushion. Seth’s assessment of 500 miles is fair for a lighter runner. For my next trail shoe, Im going with the Hoka Challenger ATR wide - a little more cushion with a wider fit. Song choice / i like cold beverages by G Love and Special Sauce - heading out on my run in MPLS where it will be 90 degrees today. Peace!

I really want to like Hoka. There shoes are always in amazing colour ways and great to run in. But their durability is what let’s them down. I had a pair of Speedgoat 4s and after the first 10k the plastic upper protection was bubbling and warping already. I also had a pair of Clifton 6s and the Eva outsole just fell apart after 50k. If they can sort their durability issues they’ll be 100x better off!
@emeahan4 жыл бұрын
I haven't had the same issue. I put 500 miles on my first pair of Clifton 6 and have 200 on my second pair. I still have my first pair for gym shoes and they look great. I have the speedboat Evo with about 250 miles on them and they also still are in great shape. Not sure what happened to yours but I'm sure there are some bad batches.

@battles4seattle6654 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately new model shoes come with a higher price. What you can do is look at videos from a year or so back and those shoes should now be cheaper. For example, I got a pair of New Balance Fuelcell Rebels and my wife got New Balance Beacon V2s recently and they were in that price range (I think mine were $80 and my wife's were $60). Those shoes would be better than any new model $50 to $100 shoe.

Thanks for the video. If you had to recommend one trail running shoe model mostly for hiking, which one would you pick? I detest hiking boots so I'm looking for a lightweight trail shoe which is comfortable for walking long distances. Not for snow or icey conditions. Unless you prefer ground contact over comfort and want to save some money, I don't see how you can benefit from the Torrent. The Evo Speedgoat have better cushioning, traction and longer lasting materials. When I'm 50+K on the trails carrying nutrition, water, etc., that small difference in weight is negligible, but the comfort on my feet (both in trail AND road) and the endurance of the shoes are worth the extra $.

just bought these and I haven't been for a run yet however there is a slight tightness on the side of the foot on the bone at the bottom of the little toe (not the toe itself). It's only on the left foot. Will this stretch in time as the shoe fits perfect elsewhere. I was going to the Speedgoat 4 but being a heavier guy I wanted less cushioning and more stability. Do you think i made the right decision?
