Which ʻoli did the crew use? Iʻd like to use it for our kids in the KIS Hoʻokaua summer program.

Hokuleia's original INTENT was to demonstrate that Hawaiians IMMIGRATED to the islands from their ORIGINAL homelands on similar canoes. Anyone remember that?

What is the purpose of this canoe sailing?

Purpose? The original Purpose was to build a canoe and sail as ancient Polynesians. But the canoe is not built true to ancient canoes, or ancient sailing techniques. The nonprofit organization is funded by donations, and officials make $150k + annually.

It was made to sail across the open ocean using only the stars to navigate across the vast Pacific. Can you sail across a mile, 10 miles, 100 miles using no compass or navigation? The Polynesians crisscrossed the Pacific over 5,000 miles and that's what this voyage is all about, to prove that the ancient Polynesians did it without the modern equipment that every modern ship or boat needs to do now.

@@jtabarejo How can you get more ancient that using only the stars to navigate? You are only focused on how much the officials make annually? Is that all you care about? Not that this is not done now, but that the Polynesians were doing it 1000 years ago. Do you worry about how much Professors are making at any of the major colleges like Stanford or Notre Dame, but not about what is being taught?

@@hankakah4180 Your interpretation is full of kaka.Hokulea is full of modern navigation equiptment. It also is equipted with can goods, bottled water. All theses are not ancient navigation. Don't spead false facts if you not aware.

You didn't even carry your canoe to the sea.... Fiberglass Navigators

Sad if you think that is what this is all about. Do you and your culture use medicine under new or ancient cultures? Do you use cars, mopeds and buses and trucks to get to your destination or still walk the miles between distances? You are just as fake for becoming modernized and not upholding your culture. Tell me when was the last time you and your culture sailed the 2500 miles of the Pacific Ocean using nothing but the stars to Navigate? When? This is what Hokule'a is practicing, navigating the stars to prove that Polynesians could cross thousands of miles across the open ocean, and you only focus on fiberglass? You use a lot of plastic so do a lot of other people around the world, does that make you lose your culture?
