Just an FYI, acrylic paints are infact waterbased as well. Its waterbased with a acrylic suspension ( binder ) and gouache is also waterbased with a gum arabic suspension ( binder )

I have a very big gouache collection, mostly royal talens which are great. But I do find my painting style to be very heavy and like you I also prefer working from dark to light. I have thought and thought for sooo long about getting some acrylic gouache either Holbein or turner (maybe you can review that, I buy it off jacksons art), but my collection is so big that it seems like such a waste, so now I actually mix my dark colors with acrylic matte medium to ensure they don't ruin the top layers and it works great!
@sandraruberto88066 жыл бұрын
I was actually wondering if there were any other brands who sells acrylic gouache and I didn't know there is also turner! I'll check that out thank you!! I've never tried to mix gouache with an acrylic matte medium but that's actually a clever thing to do! so you don't need to buy acryla gouache at all! I didn't know this matte medium even existed xD and we're similar! sometimes when I work from dark to light it can be a challenge with normal gouache because you can pick up the paint underneath and as you said, ruin the top layers! Now that I bought acryla gouache I can't wait to integrate it into my paintings when I want to work with more layers and especially work from dark to light! Thank you for commenting and sharing with me your knowledges! :)

@@sandraruberto8806 If you see Winsor and Newton website, one can add small acrylic matt mediums to make their designer gouache water-resistant. But violet, pink and magenta colors will chemically react to the medium since the mediums are alkalic. Other companies I know making acrylic gouache are Jo Sonja, Liquitex, and Vallejo.

Thanks this was great. I've been using Turner acryl gouache for a long time and I use it to "lock" a layer in a watercolor/ gouache painting. Maybe I will try this Holbein altho I never see in US. Edit: try to add more water and you will be able to get more fine details more smoothly. Also, depending on the humidity where u live & amount of water u add, u can adjust the acryl gouache for a little while. Not for hours or days like oil but at least 20 min.

I have no desire to use acryla gouache and your video has confirmed that for me. I hate acrylic paints, they feel and essentially are, liquid plastic. As long as you use a light touch and wait for under layers to dry completely I find that painting light over dark with gouache is no problem ie no lifting of the under layers occurs.

Love your video! As you worked dark to light, were the darks dry before adding lights? I'm presently taking a (regular) gouache course, but I fore see a lengthy learning curve. This new product seems maybe a quicker transition because my history is oil, acrylic and water color. Thank your for your information!!!!
@sandraruberto88064 жыл бұрын
Yes they were! in order to add light on dark is best to wait for the paint to try before applying a new layer of paint on top! otherwise the colors will get mixed together :) Normal & acrylic gouache have a both a matt finish but are different at the end. Regular gouache paint can be reactivated with water once it dries, while with acryla gouache can't be reactivated once dry and it feels more like working with acrylic paint. But since you tried most of techniques already, I think it depends if you prefer working with reactivated paint or not, to me I prefer regular gouache for this reason but maybe you could try acrylic gouache one day as well! who knows you might like it! :)

I'm really curious to see how the painting experience would be for you when mixing the acryla gouache with a retarder, it's supposed to make it flow more easily and also not dry as fast. Or have you perhaps already tried it? 😍
@WeronikaSalach6 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the review! Hmm, so what's it's main difference compared to acrylic? I still dillute my acrylic in water. Can't see where the biggest difference lies. One more question, when your acryla gouache dries out on your palette, does it go to waste then? Thanks for the info!!
@sandraruberto88066 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching!! :) so..the main difference compared to acrylic is that acryla gouache dries in the same matt finish as gouache! I also found it easier to handle acryla gouache when diluted with water, as I would work with gouache! I should do a comparison between acrylic and acryla gouache with water though, if they really behaves differently, I don't usually dilute my acrylic paint in water but I remember I tried it in the past but I think I didn't like it and it didn't work for me, so I definitely need to do a comparison for that to refresh my memory! I think it would also be helpful to make a video comparing acrylic and acryla gouache (but also gouache and acryla gouache), to really see their differences! But at the end, acryla gouache behaves more like acrylic than gouache, so unfortunately when acryla gouache dries on the palette, it goes to waste like acrylic paint :'(

Yeah I know I should try and be more adventurous with my art but I always just end up sticking to the mediums I'm most comfortable with like watercolor ; ~ ; Seeing your videos and processes though make me inspired to try different painting styles though so maybe one day I change my mind about acrylic ^^
@sandraruberto88066 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the late reply! I feel like I'm too adventurous to be honest XD I always like to experiment, draw different things and change things up so as a negative side, it's hard for me to stick doing one thing and to really define my style! But regarding the medium, it's totally fine to stick to the medium you're more comfortable with!! I enjoy using gouache the most because is medium that suits the best with the way I work. I like working with acrylic as well but it is a different painting style, it's good to experiment but it's fine to use the medium you like the most! There are always pro and cons xD

Why your holbein gouache has red cap and not white cap as the orginals?
@justtubingby1296 жыл бұрын
Hello. I didn't quite catch how this gouache is different from just using acrylics. I find that when I use 1 acrylic colour to cover a large area on paper, I am not able to get an even coverage. Is it possible to get a "smooth" even coverage with this gouache without using too much paint ? Is it possible to achieve an even, flat surface without blotchiness and brush strokes ? I work on Stonehenge paper.
@sandraruberto88066 жыл бұрын
Hello!^^ yes as you said, when using acrylic paint and when covering a large area on paper it's difficult to get an even coverage! but acryla gouache dries in a matt finish like gouache, because acryla gouache, although it behaves more like acrylic paint, the finishing is opaque so is similar to gouache! so yes you're able to get a smooth coverage and flat surface with this gouache :)

Thank you too! :) ahah sorry about that, I use a big glass jar for water when I paint, but it doesn't fit well into the camera shot so I didn't include it xD For the third painting, the one you saw me painting, I basically only wet the brush with water or added very little water so that I could get a more fluid consistency with the brush and paint! Otherwise I used the paint pretty much as it came off the tube :)

Since the color is acrylic based and eventually dries permanent and is no longer water soluble, it isn't so much a gouache but an open acrylic. To me it is Acryla rather than gouache. :)

Yeah you're right, Acryla gouache behaves more acrylic than gouache! The only similarity to gouache is that acryla gouache dries in the same opaque and matt finish as gouache and also it's easier to dilute this paint with water and to get more precise details. In the past I tried to use water with normal acrylic but but the result and the texture that came out was odd, definitely different from acryla gouache :)
