Most of his songs are essentially lullabies. If he sang them with a nice voice they would be absolutely cheesy. He knows he must camouflage the songs so that they have depth and pass muster with sensitive listener.

A great thing about Tom is that he seems to perform in a manner that pleases him in the moment. That means you can hear his recordings and listen to a number of performances of the same song yet they don't always sound the same.

"...one is never completely certain when you drink and do drugs whether the spirits that are moving through you are the spirits from the bottle or your own. And, at a certain point, you become afraid of the answer. That's one of the biggest things that keeps people from getting sober, they're afraid to find out that it was the liquor talking all along." I was pretty stunned to find out that Tom Waits is a native of Los Angeles, that's the last place i ever would have expected him to hail from... I'd be honored if some Waits fans would take a listen to my acoustic keyboard & vocal KZbin performance of THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT in tribute to the boss. Live acoustic with no digital enhancements. Peace out and stay safe.

I love Tom Waits, and this song. But I have to say something about what I heard there. There was a time when his voice was his strength, his way to be original and great. But by now, listening to this, I just feel like I'm listening to a sick man mourning. What a pity... If you don't know this song lyrics and recognize them in this live, it's such an performance...
