Just a note about Maomao's reactions to Jinshi: Don't forget... Maomao was raised in a brothel. She has seen every conceivable variation of "rizz", and she sees completely through Jinshi's attempts to manipulate her. She ain't having none of it.

Also both things can be true. It's comedic it's funny AND creepy and "problematic". If he were unattractive, this would never be kosher. Maomao: i dont like you, please stop touching me Jinshi: invades peesonal space and touches without consent while preaching about chasity and virtue Fandom: LOLOLOLOLOL SO CUTE

Fr, I legitimately didn't realize there was supposed to be legit romantic vibes in this show for a WHILE cuz Jinshi is so creepy and pushy, ESPECIALLY in the early episodes. Hell, even the hair moment in this episode STILL reads as uncomfortable and sinister to me, and it's refreshing to see someone who doesn't react to it like "ooooOOOOooo"

16:05 oh no, Maomao isn't a child 😅She's 17 at the start. She's described as a thin, short girl in the novel (probably both genetics and nutritional causes). And since this anime skips time frequently, her age probably won't be the same after each arc. Also Jinshi and her are actually pretty close in age (but there's a bit of a spoiler-ish element in specifying it so I won't lol).
@Theydas

Mao at the start 17 years old, Jinshi is 18. Well, it is a design choice. There's also two mangas with different designs for maomao. In one she looks more mature, in another (much more popular) she looks like this. She does look young, but who cares. Don't be creeps, it's just anime.

I believe that they also use similar age and birthdays as ancient China (as in, they count age from the start of the year, regardless of when her birthday is)
@whateveritbe1499
@whateveritbe1499 2 ай бұрын
@@craigpayne3265Not exactly. It is true that when being ask how old they are, they would tell their age as "xx yrs old this year", but they still celebrate their birthday, and that is the day they really seeing them as "xx yrs old". BTW, many regions in China also think that the time baby spent in their mother's belly should be counted as their age, so babies are automatically 1yr old at birth😂

Lady Gyokuyou now has a new soap opera to alleviate her boredom, the Maomao & Jinshi show. Jinshi playing wit Maomao's hair was to distract her while he snitched one of the brownies, that's why when Maomao noticed what he did she made that comment.

"She's a child!" - She's 17 at the start of the story. The world is not America for a start and judging everything by your own standards is silly. Going by that era of China, girls would usually be considered adults around age 16 and be working, also they'd be eligible for marriage. The Emperor needs an heir to legitimise his rule. The court is a very competitive place with lots of powerful families, officials and even those related to the Emperor all fighting each other for more power in the imperial court. The Emperor will usually eventually choose an official wife as the Empress which gives her more roles and makes her sort of a head of the ladies of the court, he'll also have concubines as this increases chances for an heir to be born. Pregnancy lasts a long time and infant death rates were likely higher so most royals at that time outside of a few would have multiple wives and concubines to have more babies and more chances of an heir. If he doesn't have an heir then he loses a lot of legitimacy as it becomes an unstable throne with no future, that makes his opponents stronger. This is also why concubines have to be aware of poison as other families will make their daughters a concubine to become part of the Emperor's family with an heir and it can be cutthroat with them trying to destroy other babies so theirs survive. We will touch on more things later about the bad of it if you're interested in that. Women at the time were usually political bargaining tools for the wealthy and for the not so a way to make money through marriage and selling them into servitude, there just wasn't that many options for them. She grew up in a brothel alongside many other young girls who were sold there to be trained and eventually they'll work as courtesans, this could also have become a reality for her and the other girls working as palace maids. Many families without money and status would end up sending girls there and being paid for it, they usually have a contract of 2-3 years to fulfil and the parents probably hope that some decently paid official or military man sees them and takes a liking to them to increase their own status. I guess at least in the palace she's well protected as men who are not the Emperor or a eunuch can't even enter that part of the palace so it's a much safer place to work than the city streets she grew up around.

I don't really understand how people see Maomao as a child, like she's obviously, even without us being told her age yet, a late teenager. she acts mature, and her personality shows wisdom and experience. idk why people always decide short = child lol. i have a friend in america, she's my age, but she's 4'9". however, she doesn't appear child-like of course, because she's an adult woman with a mature personality. i'm an adult woman as well, and despite being on the taller side of 5'10", one could look at both of us if we were to stand next to one-another and assert "that's two adults, or atleast their late teens.", is how i see it. and like, it's not like Mao Mao getting so excited over her hyperfixation; various poisons, is a 'child-like' trait; the neurodivergence-coding in her character is pretty clear considering her often cold exterior and how much she lights up around what she likes, it's not like enjoying things is a childish trait, afterall (unless one is like, idk, a middle-aged overworked japanese businessman, haha.). as an autistic woman myself, I too get as excited as Mao Mao; not about poison, but rather my own special interests. so, that's atleast my take on it.

In light novel and alternative manga she looks more mature, but most popular manga has younger looking maomao design and anime went with it.

@@xiaotaotao7198 Yeah, she does get a separate salary now, but her situation was only temporary. The system is not supposed to lead to slavery. MaoMao probably had some protections as a citizen and a contracted worker, though I suppose that doesn't mean much to the nobility that she gets exposed to.

Consorts/concubines are aspiring for honor and power by being sexually cherished by the Emperor and if they have a child with the Emperor, they and their family will have a huge status boost. Women are technically powerless and as this series progresses we will see that they are strong, determined, ambitious, … and whether their actions are good or bad this power struggle for them in a male dominated status obsessed society will be part of the series. This reality is not unique to Asia but pretty much universal until very very recently (Enlightenment starting in 1700) starting in the West. Women have struggled and some cases succeeded Catherine the Great, Borgias, Queen Elizabeth and Victoria, … but by far exceptions.

It wasnt really like that, more like poor people had no access to knowledge. All the small guilds/businesses had a sectarian approach of masters picking disciples to train, often relatives or children of friends. As for the gvmt officials they were like small nobility, their children had the right to learn anything. Of course the female roles in society was very limited, mostly to mothers/home makers. And for the nobles it was to establish alliances, quite like medieval europe.

Gojo and Jinshi are somewhat alike now that you bring it up, like, Gojo's always flirting with people to fuck with them, it's for a different intention than Jinshi though, who does it to manipulate others. Gojo just wants to piss people off, like when he implied that Jogo was nervous because it was his 'first time' while interlocking their fingers with one another. they give off similar vibes for different reasons.

the story very deliberately tries to avoid to tie itself to any real world time and place, but it is very much based on the Forbidden Palace in Beijing, which was the seat of the Chinese Emperor and Government during the Ming and Qing dynasties (1420-1924). but again, this is a realistic but completely fictional world. it's not a real place, they are not real people, and it's not a real time period. it's just *heavily* based on historical China. it's like how Westeros is based on medival Europe.

I'm a guy and I felt very much like Cara did at this point in the story. Sure, it's another culture, it's another time period. Jinshi is undoubtedly used to using his charm to get his way and manipulate people in the court. All of that makes sense, and there's absolutely a sense of comedy about it. But it's still completely valid to find the behavior creepy and iffy, because I did as well. And considering that Maomao feels the same way, I think it's fair to say that it's at least a little bit intentional for it to be creepy. Can't wait for more episodes, I hope Cara doesn't mind powering through the few creepy bits because oh lord is the show worth it.
