I love how part of the twist of this episode is that Maomao solves the whole mystery and determines that the solution is to... do nothing. And not only do nothing, but keep the answer to herself and lie by omission because she had no idea if Jinshi would try to prevent what was happening.

If you check back to the beginning of ep.2, you will find concubine Fuyou informing Jinshi of the poisoning in the military camp after having received a letter from her childhood friend... which also indicates he knew of the link between them all along. This show has a lot of rewatch value.

This episode was really beautiful, such a good love story, where you could feel how hard these two had to work to get their happy ending, and it feels all the better when you see the relief as they hug at the end.

Yes, the Emperor can have a wife, known in this setting as the Consort. But in order to ensure succession, he also has a number of high-status concubines. They are a backup plan only. If the Emperor and his Consort have a male child, that child would become the next Emperor regardless of whether there were older male children with the concubines. It's also worth mentioning that this is not, strictly speaking, Imperial China. It is very much a fictional setting *based* on Imperial China.

I also believe it was mentioned in episode 1 or 2 that the emperor in this setting has not chosen an emperess consort at this time, which gives more status to the high-ranking concubines.

Apothecary Diaries definitely has serious moments, I think a GOOD comedy should always be able to get serious for storytelling purposes, if needed. This show really struck me with that in episode 1 when Maomao says "they traded life for a moment of beauty, and lost both" This show reminds me a bit of the old tv show MASH, which was famous for being unserious 90% of the time and then slamming the audience with VERY hard topics about life and wartime. Maomao is seriously just SUCH an amazing character that the blend of comedy and drama work very well. It wouldn't be unfair to call her one of the best female MCs in anime already.

Concubines can be considered extra wives for the Emperor (or other ruler, such as the shoguns in Japan). They are to ensure that an heir can be born in case the main wife, the Empress, can’t conceive of a male child. In this story, there is no Empress yet, and the area that the concubines and their servants reside in is called the Inner Court. In the Edo period when the Tokugawa Shoguns ruled, the Concubines and their attendants resided in the Ooku (Inner Chambers). At its height, there were as many as over a thousand women in the Ooku. Lots of intrigue and power plays happened within the chambers. Men were not trusted to serve in these areas, so any men assigned to work in these areas had to have their manhood disabled… these are the Eunuchs. Therefore, Jinshi and his attendant are supposed to be eunuchs as well, but from the signs, it seems they are not. Jinshi has been assigned to test these women to be loyal to the Emperor, which implies that the Emperor intrinsically trusts him.

For that era most girls were deemed marriageable adult age at 15 or whenever they had their first period.The women in the rear palace were usually either political marriages or offering’s to get the emperors favor . Women were basically treated like property and the emperor was basically deemed a descendent of the gods., so it was deemed an honor for them to be given by their family’s.Eunuchs where either poor men who chose,or children given up buy there family’s for a better life/more opportunities,or those who were punished.which was quite often in those times for any little reason you could lose your life or be punished in one way or anther and it was usually severe unless you where nobility or had money. Male doctors were often not allowed to physically touch women due to issues of propriety and gender norms.After imperial china got rid of using slaves and started using basically indentured servants. It was common for poor families to sell their children to the palace for a better life/ or to have one less mouth to feed. This was few eras before china introduced the one child rule. So yay every thing sucked for commoners or poor folk.😅

Well, there are different ways to create a eunuch, obviously removing everything is an option or, using a fishing analogy you can "remove" the reel but leave the fishing pole. In the second case the eunuch could still "go fishing" but no babies.

the 4 concubines are not exactly his wifes, its... difficult to put in word... its like ladies of high status for the "gene pool" for the emporors children, gives connections to other feudal lords in a political way, and i wont try explain the situation of a certain of them, for... well... you will see and it will be explained by the show 😅

@@CaraPrezReacts as soon as you look at the rear palace as a den of politics everything will make more sense to you. All of these concubines are ladies of stature and station. They offer power to the royal family of the emperor through their subservience and loyalty. They gain power and station through their support of the Emperor and by extension the royal family. They are political party leaders in essence for the kingdoms they come from within the empire. There are a lot of other sociological aspects to the concubine relationship but KZbin comments are too short for it and I don't want to spoil. 😅 In short, while their womanhood is the primary value, it is not the only value. Becoming an Empress through marriage to the Emperor is the highest station they can reach and their homelands have a lot of political power in the royal courts. The closer the concubine relationship with the emperor the greater the power of that concubine's family on the other side in court.

Lady Gyokuyou was not jealous because of freedom but she was jealous because the man really loved lady fuyou and she was the only woman for that man. Gyokuyou really loves the emperor, but she isn't the only woman he loves, emperor shared his love with many women

Nah...gyokuyou doesn't really love the emperor... She just knows that she will be his till she dies, so she is just making the best of her situation... She is also smart and considerate.. Isn't that greedy so they emperor also favours her

She is jealous because she couldn't fall in love and experience what true love is. Unfortunately Gyokuyou was put in a position due her family wanted her there ,she has to be loyal to the emperor. And she knows she there only for children and make honor to her family and she knows emperor yang loves someone esle. She his fav because she gave birth to a daughter emperor yang first daughter and child. But thst it nothing more. There is no love between them. Respect yes but no romance cause emperor yang heart was already taken long ago. I not saying more.

Yeah, watching this, we really need to put the pov in that era, not today's logic, like things that are not allowed now may be allowed back then. This is based on Imperial China but the kingdom was fiction only. We may know this already but sometimes without realizing it, we put today's logic for a situation in that era but understandable, sometimes we just know very little about the era and that's fine, we can simply learn. Also, the show tells the time passes when you look the season changing. If you have questions, remember them but no need to dwell too much on them, that's fine. Simply remember as many details as you can, the show is good at answering many of your questions. Sometimes you'll get the answers soon, sometimes it'll take time.

Don't feel bad for consorts, those are highly coveted positions with huge political influence... in many periods they actually ruled the empires, you see this in China, Korea, Ottoman Empire...

You forget the part that sometimes they were kidnapped and they were sold as slaves. They had no free will. Not to even mention the toxic environment in courts. They had to keep giving birth to sons so they would have some value.

If the emperor had touched her that would have been it, I don't think she would have ever been allowed to leave... At least that's what happened in some periods. Of course people know of the 9 month pregnancy, but emperors are like gods so... who knows their powers?? So women that were involved with him couldn't be allowed to have children with anyone else.

I think the Emperor and Jinshi played along with Fuyou and her lover scheme. They could not formally say or reveal anything to anyone.
