The best little thing about this episode is how David removes her jacket after carrying her in his arms. & first thing Joel does is he puts a jacket on her. Both her father's age but 1 acting like a true father. Another one is Ellie quotes tess "luck had to run out sooner than later". That was smooth.

So at the start of the episode when Hannah asks when they'll bury her father (the man Joel killed at the university), David is lying when he says they'll bury him in the spring. The "venision" you see them eating later - that's Hannah's father. So she literally ate her father. The hanging bodies Joel finds in the shed confirms that they have been hunting other people for awhile and eating them. If those 4 guys at the university had been successful they would have killed Joel and Ellie, brought their bodies back, and the group would have eaten them.

That's the first time I've thought about Joel and Ellie being lunch. Played the game over and over, watched the series (over and over) and you just hammered it home. They were probably hunting the monkeys not expecting to find any more uninfected humans and booom. Main and a starter.

David tells Ellie that he sent out a group to a nearby town to look for food/supplies - they would have been looking for people to kill. They just happened to stumble across the university and saw some people in that office and started shooting. Also, monkeys wouldn't provide much meat for a group of people.

That was a cool little subtle close up of Joel's watch just as he called her "baby girl". BTW most everyone missed that when the woman asked what the food was and he said "...................venison", it wasn't until the very next scene Ellie's deer was dragged in still in one piece. I think Bella is going to get an Emmy for this one. Great acting.

The only part I thought they should've kept from the original game is when Ellie and David fought off a horde and bloater together. He doesn't reveal he actually knows she's with Joel until after they fight. So while you are hesitant to trust him or anyone, he does give you ammo and help fight, and in a way protects you. That made his intentions questionable, as fighting with him did help you lower your guard just a little bit.

Yeah, this is one part where the game is better. In the game you meet David and you don't know if Joel is alive or dead, and you feel like the game is trying to introduce David as a replacement-Joel. Ellie doesn't trust him, but then Infected show up and you have to fight them together, and you each save each other multiple times. After the Infected are dead when you go back to the fire, Ellie is no longer pointing her rifle at David - she's not even holding it. She may not trust him at this point, but she no longer sees him as a threat. So when David finally gives him "Everything happens for a reason" speech it hits so much harder, because Ellie (and the player) has started to like David. But here in the show Ellie is introduced to David, she doesn't trust him, and David immediately confirms her suspicions.

At the beginning of the episode, where David is talking about venison, elk, and rabbit, those are code words referring to the types of human meat they have. This is alluded to more in the game where Joel finds an inventory list. Venison=male adult, elk=female adult, rabbit=child. That's why he told "buddy boy" when Ellie asked for the medicine that he wasn't talking code.

TW: SA… Loved how we finally saw a glimpse of how dangerous and vicious Joel once was. It all comes out when he knows his little girl is missing…he violently killed Mrs. Alder’s mom in Ep 1 to save Sarah too. Moral of the story: love can bring out the best and worst in all of us! My heart broke when Ellie killed David-you can tell she’s taking out all of her pent-up trauma, grief, anger and pain onto him. He preyed on her worst fear, which is ending up alone. So when she leaves the building, she probably thinks she’s alone until Joel shows up to remind her she’s not. I think this is the first time we’re reminded, as an audience, that at the end of the day, Ellie may be wise beyond her years, sassy and strong, but she’s still a little kid (14 but still), who’s gone through an unimaginable trauma of being violated and needs comfort in this moment. Bella’s portrayal of Ellie’s trauma response (the screaming, blank stare, panic, mumbling incoherently) was so raw and real. I think we could all use a big bear hug from Pedro Pascal when we’re sad/scared. 🐻❤️‍🩹-the way he delivered the line “look” was so gentle and soothing. Joel doesn’t save Ellie physically, but he saves her emotionally in that moment. I’ve watched a lot of reactions from therapists, and people who’ve experienced SA on KZbin who say that the way Joel comforted her was such a great example of the way you should be with someone who’s been traumatized: he doesn’t ask her what happened (talking about it can be re-traumatizing), he just holds her and cradles her, tells her she’s safe, and then bundles her up in his coat to keep his baby girl warm. I hope Pedro, Bella, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman know how cathartic and healing that final scene was for many people, and I applaud them for handling such heavy, disturbing topics with such care. ❤

It's also important not to FORCE contact on a person in that state though. Joel did almost everything right for the way Ellie was reacting, and everything you mentioned is good advice. But the one thing I feel he should have done different was to let her go when she tries to push away from him, rather than holding her close. As a survivor of childhood SA my experience was that I needed space. I couldn't have people touching me. It gave me flashbacks. Not even a tap on the shoulder or holding someone's hand. I avoided physical contact for years afterward. If the person you're trying to help is flinching away or trying to put distance between you, my advice would be to let them have that distance. You can and should still do those other things: don't ask them to talk about it, assure them that they're safe, etc., just also give them space.

Random stuff from this part of the game ... David isn't religious in the game. He's just the leader of this cannibalistic cult, and a pedophile. You go from Joel being stabbed to Ellie hunting the deer. You have no idea if Joel is alive or dead until Ellie asks for some medicine. The previous episode is a DLC so it's played after the game is finished. When Ellie and David first sit around the fire, some Infected show up and you have to fight them. David saves Ellie a few times, and vice versa. By the time it's over (after fighting a Bloater!) and you return to the fire, you (and Ellie) are starting to like/trust David. So when he gives the "Everything happens for a reason" speech it hits much harder than it does in this episode.

From the very start of this show, months prior, I was telling some of my co workers to watch this show. All of them female and older than me and I'm 39. One in particular is an immagrant from Bulgaria. I told her there was one moment from the game I hope would happen in the show, because it tore me to pieces emotionally. Just like that, no context, or spoilers. I didn't even tell her if it was a happy or sad moment. The moment was, Joel calling Ellie "babygirl". Every episode she kept asking, "Was that it?". And every day I said, "No. Believe me, you'll know when you see it." The day after this episode aired I walked in and she said, with not a single bit of being wrong looked at me and said, "Babygirl". All I said was "I knew you'd know."

Troy Baker, the voice actor who played James (got knifed in the throat by Ellie at the end), ad-libbed "Baby Girl" when doing the motion capture for Sarah's death. People on the crew were crying... because of the acting by a guy in a scuba suit with ping pong balls glued on cradling a dummy. And ever since that moment, Joel's "Baby Girl" lines are a dagger to everyone's emotions... and this might be the worst. Also, Joel's watch isn't just broken, it stopped on the exact moment his daughter died.
