Fun Fact: the voice of the Ferrari at 34:37 was actually done by 7x F1 Champion and Ferrari driver Michael Schuhmacher. In the international dubbed versions of the movie had various former Ferrari drivers lend their voice for that cameo. Cars 2 and 3, along with their international versions also have a bunch of voice cameos from various racing drivers (Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso, Sebastian Vettel, Niki Lauda, Mika Hakkinen, etc)

In nascar they have in car cameras. If a driver deliberately wrecks another driver, they will pull the driver from the race. It usually only happens in the last lap of a race so that doesnt matter. The driver will lose points from that race, and could have to sit out other races. The yellow for the flat is true, assuming that debris from the tire went onto the track. And no you cannot gain track position on pit road, to the cars on the track, you can gain positions to the other drivers who pit.

Hell we had SO MANY cars from this (by the way they’re just slightly larger than matchbox which was a pita). It’s not just nascar, it’s most motorsports. When there’s an incident(severity varies by league) the race gets paced and you can’t pass/move position. That’s why lightning had to beat the pace car, to be able to loop while they’re stuck behind it. Otherwise he was going to be stuck behind it too and a lap down with no way to make it up.

1:43 not “Route 66”, although two versions of that are in the film-one by Chuck Berry, one by John Mayer (with the latter essentially being a cover of Chuck’s version). The Rascall Flats song in this is a cover of “Life is a Highway”, originally by a Canadian musician named Tom Cochrane. He’s sort of Canada’s version of Bruce Springsteen.

I actually consider this to be a top 5, if not top 3, Pixar film. And the reason why is that despite all the people being literal vehicles, it feels more real than just about any other animated movie I’ve ever seen. Ironically the most unbelievable part of the film is just the idea that Lightning would actually change his ways and mindset, but hey that’s the point of films is to tell the amazing story that doesn’t usually happen. Otherwise it all feels very real, the up and coming rookie in a modern sport who has amazing natural genetic talent but no true skill and doesn’t know anybody, believing he has to pump himself up at the expense of others. Gets side railed on the way to the next event, learns a few tricks and combines that with being the most naturally gifted person, wins the race (obviously Chick got the cup but we all know who won). Sprinkle in some real facts of history and nostalgia to give life lessons, of a years gone athlete in the same profession who had the same gift but due to an injury was forgotten and shunned, becomes bitter to his past even to the point of acting like his old self doesn’t exist. Having the love for the sport slowly reignited by encountering a young buck who reminds him of himself. The city person who had it all but wasn’t fulfilled, finding a small town and realizing it’s the little things that matter. A commentary on how the interstate highway system may have been good for ease of access and overall efficiency but you end up sacrificing those little things and experiences for the sake of that efficiency. Radiator Springs is a real story for countless towns that made up the real Route 66 that were famous for their high quality local businesses, only to become abandoned and/or decadent ghost towns when the interstates were constructed, because a lot of those businesses relied on traveling customers and lost 90% or more of them. I do local deliveries as sales and I have to drive to stops alongside southwest MO’s section of Route 66 often and it’s heartbreaking to see

I think about this every time I see this movie, but McQueen's tire blew with HALF A LAP to go, and people (real life and in-movie) ragged on him for skipping tires in the pit, but he would've won that race nearly a lap UP on the whole field if Chick Hicks didn't pit him and wear down his tires so bad in a full-speed slide. Sliding like he did probably put 20+ laps worth of wear on his tires... Like, both with driving and race strategy, McQueen handedly won that race if the officiating actually cracked-down on Chick the cheater.

This definitely did well in the box office. It did so well that they came out with a game. I stayed playing it as a kid

Cars is a sensorial experience. It's a vibes movie. I kinda love that it's so chill and not in a hurry to get anywhere in particular. By the time the final race starts we don't even care about it anymore, just like McQueen doesn't care about it at that point. That's a story well told.

obvious but often missable: NASCAR's pit stop time on average is 15-17 seconds. Guido, being "coded" italian (plus all the schumacher references inside Luigi's) implies that his pit stop skill is emulating Formula1 standard, which is 2-3 seconds. that's why he's THAT fast.

You should watch Days of Thunder with Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Robert Duvall. It's a little cheesy story wise, but does do a good job of "explaining" NASCAR.

The mob of photographers reminds me of Toby Maguire getting stopped in his car by journalists and he gets out and yells at them to get out of the road

I remember when my mom took me to go see this movie in theaters. (As a kid I loved cars and vehicles. So this movie piqued my interest.) This was, and still is, one of my favorite Disney/Pixar movies. (Hard to believe that this movie is nearly 20 years old.)

This movie was one of the definitive parts of my childhood! Somewhere at my parents there is still a tote full of every toy car possible from this movie. I also find it interesting that this is a love letter to Nascar, which never resonated with me but is very cool for fans of racing and racing history.

The announcers are NASCAR announcers, one is the HoF driver Darrell Waltrip. And the King is The King Richard Petty with the car's look based on one of his famous cars.

This movie was amazing on the big screen. There was also a Cars console game that was so much fun. Driving around Radiator Springs, racing on the Nascar tracks, performing quests, driving up to the Wheel Well Motel, etc. was just awesome.

Larry the cable guy (mater) was supposed to be a short lived side character to add comedic value. But the writers fell in love with his humor and rewrote the script to add him into the movie as an important role. Then in cars 2 he is basically the main character. Crazy how he is so loved but was never meant to be a legit character.

I loved this movie as a kid, and I still do. I still have tons of merch from it. Bedsheets, toy cars, mini race tracks, clothes, I even think I used to own Lightning McQueen shoes as a kid 😂. Though every time I watch a first time reaction of it on YT I remember how old I'm getting, having seen this in cinemas.
