They were LARPing as King Arthur and his Knights, then some idiot killed an actual historian. So the police had to track them down. That's the synopsis.

I came here immediately to see these women not like this movie. I have no idea if I will be right or wrong, but I will be happy either way. I feel like they will be confused through a lot of it, lol.

the budget weas around 300.000$ (410.000$ in that time worth) given to them by pink floyd, led zeppelin elton john and others xD so no they had NO money at all. so no horses they are to expensive and also the ending is a "cop out" because they ran out of money and well it fits right ? its a "cop out" xD FYI: in older times, the credits came before the movie not after :) its nothing rly special also british income tax were up to 90% at that time so it was basicly a tax write off for the bands giving the money :)

This was the PERFECT reaction. Trying to overthink Monthy Pythons sometimes can lead to confusion and other undesired side effects. What a classic.

Everyone is pushing more movies but I think smaller doses are the way to go. See an episode of the Flying Circus. Appreciate the absurdity in digestible bites. There's a movie, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, with Martin Freeman (Bilbo Baggins), Zooey Deschanel (in Elf) and Professor Snape (sorta).

Monty Python was a comedy troop, they had a TV show in the 70's called Monty Python's Flying circus. In the movie the members of Monty Python played multiple characters.

You guys just aren't meant for silly comedy. You are trying to make sense of the intentionally absurd. It's not supposed to make sense. That's the point. You dont need to know religion or Arthur. Not trying to be mean but this was like watching people being too dumb to understand something is trying to be dumb.

Thanks for this reaction, Jen. You were brave indeed to venture into the twisted universe of Monty Python without any advance preparation Like watching a few episodes of their TV series. Monty Python was a UK-based comedy troupe of writers/performers. Each of them, Graham Chapman (who played King Arthur, etc), John Cleese (Sir Lancelot, Tim the Enchanter, and the lead French taunter, plus the one who claimed he'd been turned into a newt), Terry Gilliam (old man at the bridge, etc), Eric Idle (Sir Robin - but not "Robin Hood", and Roger the Shrubber), Terry Jones (Sir Bedevere and lots of men and women), and Michael Palin (Sir Galahad the Chaste, the sassy peasant, and lots more), were products of good university educations in the UK (except for animator and occasional actor Terry Gilliam, who was American). They all started as comedy writers for other people's TV shows. After a few years they pitched and were given their own TV sketch comedy series on the BBC in the late 1960s, and chose the title "Monty Python's Flying Circus". After several successful seasons on the BBC - and being broadcast on PBS in North America, the show ended. (You likely can find all the seasons on Netflix and I have them in a box of DVDs.) Based on their TV success, the group moved into making movies. The first was "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", which was made on a small budget. Most people raised on English literature learn something about the stories of King Arthur and his knights of the round table at Camelot. Perhaps it is the tale of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. Or something to do with Arthur, the sword in the stone, and the dangerous Morgan le Fay and the magician Merlin. Anyhow, this group of writers took great liberties with a few of the stories about Arthur and the knights. Plus, Terry Jones had studied medieval European history at university (he wrote a scholarly and entertaining book about Chaucer's "Knight's Tale" in the Canterbury Tales), so some of that knowledge was twisted into some of the comedy. In those times, witch trials and burnings at the stake were a thing. Collection of dead bodies to reduce the threat of ongoing infection and reduce the stench of corpses rotting in the streets was a thing during Plague years. England being taken over by French speaking former-Vikings (now Normans) was a thing with the Battle of Hastings won by William the Conqueror in 1066 CE. The levels of humour in this classic comedy run from the juvenile and stupid to clever word play and subverting of movie clichés, to deeply sly wit based on their knowledge of history and literature. And as you noticed, the core six members of the comedy troupe play most of the roles in the movie (for example, both the English and French knights ( or "kn-iggets" - based on the Middle English spelling and pronunciation of "knights"). And I hope you may slow down the opening credits so that you can enjoy the moose humour! I was a teen when Holy Grail hit cinemas in Canada, and already a massive fan of M Python. My friends and I went to see it a few times on its first release. I bought the soundtrack LP when it was released, and the screenplay when it was published. More recently, I have been enjoying the look of the blu-ray release. Those supplement the larger Monty Python collection of blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, and books in my bookcase.

If you go back much further than the 70s in movies, they used to have all their credits at the front of the film instead of the end. Now they do select credits at the beginning and the complete list of credits for EVERYTHING at the end.

"I've had worse!" The budget for the film was low enough that they couldn't afford to use horses IRL, that's why the squires are banging coconut halves together. Lastly if you are expecting a Python movie, or sketch, or scene to make sense...you are in for a rough ride.

The only reason you think of it as guy humor is because your resident guy is Holden. It’s British humor, and kinda weird even for that. I love it. It’s so silly.

So I looked up the budget of the film (I was curious myself) It was apparently £282,035.00, which is 358,575.95 in US Dollars (Less than half a million Dollars! 😳) I think the small budget was intentional for the movie. I always interpreted its humor as mocking low-budget fantasy films (Which explains the running coconut horse gag, the opening credits, cheap animation, and the ending;)

The fact that so much of this "guy humor" either went right over your heads or was completely ineffective was actually really satisfying. Watching you try to rationalize it and figure it out logically was hilarious. The budget was about $320K by the way.
