Oswestry to Whitchurch Disused Railway Part 1

My latest journey through Shropshire's Railways takes me on the most Easterly stretch of the Cambrian Railway from Oswestry to Whitchurch. In part one we discover what is left of the stations at Whittington, Frankton and Ellesmere. Sadly the site of Ellesmere Station is down for housing development and the area could soon be consigned to history. With this in mind, it was great to get up close to film the old station building.

Just discovered your execllent videos of Shropshire Railways, it makes me so mad that we've lost such outstanding infrastructure across the UK, these rail routes should have never been closed. Access to Railways can transform people's lives.

There's no 'foresight' in this country when it comes to old railway lines. At least they could make some use of the old station building at Ellesmere - turn it into a museum?? But they probably won't. Why don't we celebrate our railway heritage more? ....a 1960's style 'embarrassment' about it still persists it seems.

Thank you for your video. Watching from Philadelphia. Sad to see so many wonderful British railways fade away. Why couldnt Dr Beeching leave track intact? Didnt he spend money to remove track?

I hope the developers manage to keep that canopy and its ironwork in tact when they remove it; and that they sell it to a heritage railway. I hope this comment isn't made too late to save it. I just read in a comment below that the station is a listed building; so if that's true it should still be there today. As for reopening the line; although it's suggested by the Campaign for Better Transport - it's going to cost a bomb, and hundreds of landlords will have to be found, then persuaded to sell bits of their land.

Ellesmere station and the land has just been sold so will almost certainly be developed into a housing estate but luckily the station building is listed so probably won't be knocked down.

Let's hope planners can incorporate the wonderful Ellesmere Station into flats and apartments - not everyone wants to live in a run of the mill new house. Protecting fine heritage and Victorian architecture telling an historic story of interest for all time.

On the 2021 Google Maps, the Ellesmere station building is still standing. Just north of Brownlow Crescent.
