As a retired farmer, who was a "wild man " on a tractor in my teenage years, the shoe lace was caught on brake pedal, he could have pushed in brake pedal or just push in the clutch pedal, he was totally inexperienced, got scared and panicked.

There's an odd phenomenon where you get this weird feeling of satisfaction from seeing this song paired with a scene where someone is shifting gears with some sort of machinery. It happened once when I saw the Tetris movie where they shifted the car into high gear during the chase scene, and it happened again when I saw this scene where he shifted gears to use the bulldozer.
