We continue to fight the holdingtank from hell aboard our 82 ft historic steel vessel.
It turns out to be incredible difficult to get this disgusting wastewater tank out of our huge ship.
So it is us against a tank full of shit.
Who will be victorious, the tank or us?

Just to give you an overview what this channel is all about. We bought this massive steel trawler. Which once was a tall Ship.
On the long run we plan to converter her back into a topsail schooner. The timeframe for that will be 5 to 10 Years.
So we are in for a long journey.
But we already use this ship as our home. So you can expect videos about projects, about traveling and about living on a floating refit.

When I was a very young man of 16 years, long before "PC" I was a young seaman on a small grain carrier owned by my uncle. At the end of delivering the grain (bulk cargo), my job was to be lowered through a 2-foot by 2-foot removable plate in the lower bilge and scrape out rotting grain with a dustpan into a bucket to be hauled up and disposed of. I had no equipment other than a damp cloth tied around my face and I can tell you that rotting grain spelled like old sh*t, it was awful but had to be removed. I can sympathize with you having to clean out the old septic tank and congratulate you on a job well done. I am now 74 yrs old and in great health.

When i was 18 i worked on an old wooden tug boat she was 60 feet long with a Caterpillar engine . The main shaft rested on a iron wood carrier block one of my many jobs was to make sure that the oiler system was always in working order .I was also the electrician , mechanic and first mate and deck hand and all around Mr fix it guy .In short i did every thing from tying on to the loads we pulled being barge or raft to final drop and anchor .The only thing i did not do was steer the tug ..Throughout your post i watched today you had me smiling and out right laughing .At the ending you explained why you wanted to do all of this and with this boat ,you 2 and i think a lot alike right down to our sense of humor . Until next time Take a moment for yourselves and have a glass of wine You deserve it .

I used to work for a man in NYC who was resurrecting a sunken light ship into a floating disco.lots of days doing that kind of work. The demolition phase suuuuucks. You have the two most important tools : perseverance and a good grinder. We found that using grind stones on edge worked better than cut off wheels . They last a lot longer and are less expensive. If you use the technique of scoring a line and moving back and forth over the line rather than a plung cut you get more work out of the wheels. Hope this helps.

Kudos to you both on creating another landmark boat restoration channel. Bringing back an example of maritime history is a very worthy thing to do for society! A picture, plan or model of a boat/ship is no substitute for the real thing! You are approaching the project with 'practical integrity' as you preserve what is significant and yet still make a safe seaworthy tall ship so ignore those who promote the easy shortcuts! Some people will be horrified as the destruction of the internal fit out but there was nothing there worth saving and nothing that is consistent with the planned tall ship design - except perhaps for some of the doors and hinges. I have just binge watched from the beginning and have admired the quality of video production but hope you do not sacrifice restoration content on the altar of entertainment as you are creating an important document of maritime history! Thank you.

i do think your Ship philosophy is right on the mark you can't buy a new ship with history plus they are never the way you really want them in the layout unless you spend millions Fling coney is yours and she has a lot of history and your both young and fitt enough to carry out most of the work required on her plus yo will be able to build her the way you want it to look and restyle the inside to your requirements and comfort and I bet she will look splendid when you have finished her plus its really enjoyed watching you guys rebuild her to her glory days and learning on the way on how to rebuild a ship of her size and yes she is well worth refitting as a bit of rust can always be removed and replaced with shinny new metal and another hundred years of use you will get out of her so yes you will have your downs but you will get a lot more ups than downs once you have got to the complete strip out of her then the only way is up and the fun begins rebuilding her yes stripping out is tedious but worth it then the fun of painting and fitting all the new items she requires all the rewiring plumbing heating insulation before you start on the cabins your plan will be able to be drawn once she is stripped out to the hull so you can see where all the structure beams are to attach all the floors to and the cabins and comfort areas can start to be built maybe changing out the portholes to something modern or just re building them to keep her standard that's all up to you so much to think about but it will be fun.so all the best great video once again thumbs up for Me everytime bye from John from Rugby UK.

I see this channel growing like Proect Brupeg. As the two of you get more comfortable in front of the camera your sense of humor begins to come out more and more. Keep up the great work. Daniel, you don't have to run the grinder into the stop, just push the button down and rotate the wheel by hand until it stops. Also if you hold down the stop and turn the whole disk counterclockwise you get more leverage and it spins off with ease. You should probably have it unplugged or the battery removed, but I never do either.

🫤 I just followed the instructions that came with the grinder and there's also an instruction video on YT. But it's correct that you'r supposed to unplug the tool after pressing the quick button. I had to look it up because I only used standard angle grinders before with the key.

Loved this week's video. Great still picture of Daniel's triumph over the tank. Very entertaining video. You should sell the series to the Discovery channel. Original packing material might have been flax stems, as it was a very durable and one thing that could withstand the friction, as well as swell when in place and become tight enough to keep out water. It might be interesting to find the ships logs from archives and read about any exciting storms or events and cargo in her life before you found her. Good job Barbara and Daniel. Impressive effort. I love working with the chainsaw and I always wear protective trousers and boots. I remember how often you had a nail punching through your shoes. So I'm not sure if your dad's correct about you using a chainsaw... A thing that's difficult to show in the videos is how tall the lads working on the ship are. Since everything on the ship is huge it looks like everything is in proportion a normal sized. But in fact they're all giants. So you can imagine how much force Lukas used to unscrew the stubborn bolt and to get the old packing out. A 6'4 man in his prime. He made it look easy.

Kudos to Barbara. I have always been overwhelmed by smells. Even cleaning the cat box was problematic. It's worse since I had chemo. As a result, I find that I enjoy cooking a lot more, so I guess there's a positive in it, but I almost envy the ability to edit out the olfactory sense. Given the amount of work involved in removing the "shit tank," I'm sure I would choose a composting system. I love the way you name a bunch of video channels that I already watch. Most of those have been part of my 'education' when I couldn't really do much else but watch. Great entertainment, and good food for thought about how I might approach those same problems.

Rebuilding instead of repair/destruction is a long way off but I have you thought about alternatives to plywood or wood that is easier to work with than more steel ( since the plywood is cause of issues). Epoxy coated plywood is not a solution….. One suggestion might be ‘corplas or twin wall’. It is rot proof , non water absorbing, strong and very durable , available up to 19mm ( or more?) accepts glue , has edge treatment available etc. there are also other non wood materials too. Cheers Warren

Have you considered using an SDS drill? This have a reciprocating action and as well as drill can take chisel a bits which would great for demolition. No more hammer and crow bar, plus an SDS will be helpful in so many other ways for your projects.

I think I'd invest in a oxy-acetylene torch and tanks and a pneumatic jack hammer. You may be money ahead to just remove the masts and put a new boat under them! You are far more industrious than I am. Lucas has a job for life.

You're welcome. I wear chainsaw trousers and boots every time. I know how severe injuries with the chainsaw is. But a chainsaw jacket is only recommended for the second guy on a lifting platform. The chainsaw user is protected by the chain break if the tool is properly handled.

Daniel you don’t need to have the disk turning just off of power to find the shaft locking notch. That method will eventually round over the detent pin, or worse. Simply apply and hold light pressure to the detent pin and then rotate the disk by hand until the pin drops into the notch. Your tool will last longer this way. Small 90° grinders are a great tool for small up close work, But you will really step up your game by buying a larger 90° grinder. They simply cut so much faster. Anyway, you guys keep up the great work! Your channel makes me smile so much. This old man is vicariously living a younger life. Just watching y’all work so hard on your dream. It’s everything I can do, to finish my projects around the house. We’ve remodeled so much with me doing all of the work. The next project is a new laundry room!😵‍💫😬 My beloved Pat is excited, she, incorrectly, thinks that that will be the last thing I do to the house. Silly woman😂🤣 I firmly believe that when I stop building, which is what I’ve done professionally my whole life, except for that 23 year stent of owning an auto repair shop, i’ll just fade away. So in the meantime, you guys keep working Because you give me encouragement to keep doing the things that I do! And I know that you do this for many other people around the world also. All my best.

Thank you for your comment. If you'r afraid of running out of work I have enough work for you too. Or if just imagine the feel of de-rusting 200ft waterline the imagination alone should keep you going for a few more years. So just don't stop watching our video 😁 For the angle grinder, I'm absolutely sure that the way I changed the discs is how Metabo intended to use the M-Quick system. There's a video on YT from the company itself and to my big surprise they don't even unplug the tool either 😬

Rebuilding this ship is a great project, as long as you don't think you will have a new boat ( like tally-ho) but a well maintained old lady that can have many more adventurers, just not too challenging. Cheers Warren Did you mention Project Brupegee in Australia?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
We currently do watch Brupegs playlist from the beginning. They are in my recommended channels list in the description 😉 But Brupeg is a relatively new built trawler that's why I haven't mentioned them in this video since she's not an historic boat. Fun fact, I've just realized that Brupeg is about four! times smaller than Flying Coney. We still have more steel thickens left than Brupeg was built with.😎 But not sure if I scared by this facts 😳

Yes I realised after I wrote i brupeg was much newer , same as 'Danger marine' small trawler.

Don't let other comments about the condition/age/how much work needs to be done to her to effect (I'm talking about "Flying Coney" and not Barbara 😁😁) what you are doing or thinking. Once done, there will be so many awesome things to share and talk about, that doing it the "other/better way" isn't possible.
