Whenever you’re welding or grinding, use a M0 fire blanket to protect the area where splatter/sparks go. You never know what may catch fire. And splatter/sparks can create small holes you’ll discover later. Good job and good progress!

Congratulations on surviving so far. It’s good that you are both young and energetic. I’m sure this has been hugely tiring physically and mentally. Hang in there… it appears you are past the worst. At least the hull can be fixed. It’s a bummer to have to gut the interior, but one thing you will know for certain is there there will be nothing left hiding. Better to go to bare metal inside and out and know it is all treated properly. You guys will be custodians of this lovely old ship and with a little luck, she’ll still be sailing in another hundred years. Then your legacy will live on deep into the future.

You are moving at the speed of light with this renovation. Just keep your head down and keep plugging at it, it is an enormous amount of work you are going through! I am amazed. A little trick maybe? If you tie a little piece of lanyard at the end of the drain pipe under the sink, when water exits the pipe it will follow the piece of lanyard and become a nice little flow of water down the bucket instead of splashing down.

The way that you're able to sandblast in a residential area is you hang heavy tarps over the side and you work under the tarps allowing the residue and dust to fall to the ground then you clean it up afterwards. It's important to have respiratory protection and oxygen piped in to a helmet that is designed for working in a sandblasting area that way your filter doesn't clog up so fast. Of course if you sandblast inside everything is contained to the inside of the ship. There are other types of media to blast with other than sand that are less dusty but they may not be what's needed on the side of a ship. I'm sure y'all will do what you can do and what you can afford.
@FlyingConey

Building a blasting tent would've been possible but it's more expensive than the blasting. We would like to hyddrojet blasts aka Ultra High Pressure wash because that's the best method for a riveted hull. But the truth is there are a lot of expensive decisions connected with blasting and an unplanned prolonged stay in a shipyard isn't the right time to make them. It's just too easy to make a very expensive mistake.

Once you want to go for sandblasting the complete hull and the vessel is fully operational to sail check out prices with yards in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia. Sandblasting and all kind of shiprepairs are usually much cheaper in those countries compared to Holland. Of course the disadvantage is that you first have to bring the ship there which also cost money. But I think it is worth to investigate. For bigger ships it was often cheaper to go to one of those countries. Wishing you success with the further restauration and upgrade of Flying Coney.
@HogueMify
@HogueMify Жыл бұрын
I would also consider Turkey. Carpentry work is dirt cheap there, and as they don't have one million stupid EU laws, sandblasting and painting will be a bargain. Plus you can work all year round without shoveling snow on deck.
@felixfeleus510
@felixfeleus510 Жыл бұрын
@@HogueMify Turkey is definitely an option especially now with the economical situation there. But the distance and the related costs to bring the vessel there will most probably making Turkey less competitive. But it is definitely a country to consider.
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
One of the huge benefits of heaving a ship is that it's possible to travel to destinations where the work is best or most economical. But first we have to get Flying Coney back into operational conditions. But we plan to lay the wooden deck in Germany, then maybe go to Poland for the sandblasting, come back to the Netherlands for the masts and then sail to the Mediterranean for interior carpentry. Most of the unseen work is research and project management. But thank you for the advice! It's always welcome at our side 👍
@felixfeleus510
@felixfeleus510 Жыл бұрын
@@FlyingConey Once you intend to sail to different countries in different directions it may not work out anymore. The price of the works may be cheaper, but the costs to get there at a certain moment is going to exceed the savings. I have done it a lot with commercial ships but beforehand we were always making a calculation what it would cost us to get to a certain yard/destination and what we should save on the works there. Often it was not worth to sail a long distance but to get to a yard closer by.

For the money you spent on cutting disks, you could have bought an El Cheapo plasma cutter. Favourably one with a built in compressor. But it is not too late, you will need it. The "air chisel" is called a needle scaler. You will become good friends. The real air chisel is the thing you will use when you have to rip out parts of the concrete to get to the paper thin plating. PS: The really bad holes won't show up until in the middle of the atlantic in a force 11, when the hull really starts to flex.

But also in my case, I believe that I will never get Linda done. It will take the rest of my life.😂😂😂😂 Every job you do is making the boat better, even when you’re smashing rust, breaking apart the interior and discovering new little holes. You are getting to know your boat inside and out and every new thing you learn is building a picture. Once you have the complete picture, you will then have full control. Then you’ll be able to prioritise jobs knowing what do you need to do now and what you need to do later but you already know this. Keep cracking on! The video is great. Herman is a beast.😂😂😂😂

Hi guys, what a tremendous undertaking for a couple (or for anyone), but can see why you are doing it. Maybe have missed this, but do you have an Ultrasonic survey of the hull and/or pressure test of the keel cooling system? Not fully sure what you intend to do with the boat in the future. If you carry passengers you will need a "classification" society. (They will ask for things like that) The Dutch Shipping Inspectorate is known to be lenient towards historic ships, but always with the understanding that they will sail in protected waters (Ijsselmeer). Any other classification society will not be too happy to see doubling plates on top of weakened corroded steel structures. Have sailed on old commercial ships and know what headache this can become. In any case wish you a lot of luck with this and please do not fall in love too deeply with the "old gal" - that's always going to be very expensive
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
We had an official from Register Holland renew the thickness measurement and the average steel thickness is very good. We are registered as a pleasure craft with a valid CVO so that means we are legally allowed to have 12 passengers plus crew aboard. The cooling pipes were renewed in 2018 but we probably switch to a system with an heat exchanger. It's important that the doubling plates are there to fix localizes issues like holes. It's not because the hull thickness in that area is bad or to thin. Sometimes there are imperfections in the steel and due to the amount of welding that is necessary to repair the unfortunate electrolysis damage these imperfections are causing issues. Well I try to explain it that way, usually you NEVER sandblast an old ship in the water no matter how thick the hull is. But that doesn't mean that the hull is to far gone. I hope that explains our situation a bit.

I watch all the videos on the channel, and I find such a project motivating and inspiring. Although..... Save time, because time is money. Hire 3 helpers, clean the entire interior to scratch, remove all the concrete, it will save you time and a lot of money. Use this pneumatic nailgun tool...all over the hull to make sure you don't get any more surprises. I say this because if this project were mine, I would have hired 3 interns (young guys) to demolish the entire interior, there will be more time to edit videos, and all the rest. Last but not less important. If you have money to buy a blaster laser gun (portable one). Go buy one. Is the best invest. In long term you have.

If your yard has any kind of efficient sandblasting equipment they could do the hull in two or three days tops as opposed to your "weeks of work". Sand blasting gives a much better job than hand grinding as well. That would allow you to make much more efficient use of your time on jobs that are needed.
@FlyingConey

With the Tercoo we achieve a very good result much better than hand grinding and sandblasting isn't recommended on riveted hulls. Now get an alternative sorted out, working 10 hours a day on the boat and 14 hours at the weekends editing a video so that you can follow along.

I'm a little behind on some of the newer technology when it comes to rust removal. Have been involved with lots of sand blasting, some was very technical. Do they make a Laser big and strong enough to burn through the amount of rust you have? If they do it would be the way to go depending on price. Sand will definitely get it down to the bare metal. Depending on the grit and how it is directed it will leave a good profile for the paint to bond to. Paint likes a rough surface. But it is very dirty and dusty

Please explain your plans for sea and waste water plumbing; I believe I heard you say that you were abandoning the waste water through hull fitting and connecting the waste plumbing to the 'fresh' (I think you meant 'sea') water through hull. Sea water is used for engine cooling, generator cooling, hot water pre-heat, anchor chain and deck washdown, dish washing, head flushing, and perhaps more, so I"m sure there's more to the story. You might consider a sea chest approach to limit the number of sea water through hulls. Congrats for getting to the point where you are putting spot primer on repaired and corroded outside hull areas. That should be something to be cheerful about, although it seems Daniel is anything but.

To your question: if somehow affordable I would never sandblast, I personally have not had good experiences with it, the impact changes the surface of the steel in an unfavorable way, welding spatter and oil contamination cannot be removed at all which in turn leads to poor adhesion of the paint...

Please remember, if people make negative comments about Flying Coney it’s because they really don’t want to see anything happen to you when you are out in rough weather and a few tons of water hit the side of your boat.

I know I'm crazy. I just think if you open 2 deck hatches place an air mover pushing air in one hatch and place a large dust collector bag on the other open deck hatch, and temporarily close door ways. You could at least sand blast the interior which would be immensely faster than chipping away on the interior. By doing that it would give you dust control and be able to screen the sand to be reused, plus speed up the process. That would control the cost of blasting media and environmental impact. It will aid in locating weak spots on the hull, which can be repaired because all rust would be removed. Welding from the inside would leave a smoother exterior profile. But I'm crazy. :)

you two should consider buying a welder and learning to weld you will continue to need it.

Perhaps you would consider having a hull ultra sound done to your hull from waterline down. Grid style process. Is there a Surveyor who specializes in steel hulls in the area who would do this? Highly recommended as it will show exactly the condition of the vessel. Good Luck with your endeavors

Hi, yes we've done an ultra sound check and it's in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/iaHCm6yAp9OCl7c The hull is sound and there is plenty of steel thickness left. We have some localized issues mostly caused by the mistake of laying wood against steel no big deal.

@@FlyingConey yes I dis see that! Seems he sounded with the hammer and took randome readings with his ultrasound unit. And as I recall you discovered problems a shirt distance away from the new plate you had welded on. That's why I suggested to have a grid ultrasound. Lines forward from bow to stern from just above waterline to keel approx 1 door or so apart, then vertical lines about the same! Then you can read everything accurately and define the hull more properly especially where the ballast sections are. Just a Thought! Thank You

@@ablemarine9072 The hammering is to hear were the thin spots are. So the measurements are not random, each plate is measured and theoretically you have the lowest readings possible. But the steel is probably close to 100 years old so you can't compare the quality with modern steel. There are imperfections and if you weld close to one a small hole opens up. Sometimes it's possible to weld it shut but you see the result when not. We use very high settings on the welder to have better penetration but it's also a way to find the imperfections in the steel. The risk of a hole the size of a golf ball opening up is very very small. Usually a leak in a steel hull starts as a wet spot on the hull. Months later you see water slowly dripping down. Ask someone with a wooden boat, they have leaks all the time...

@@FlyingConey I restored several wooden vessels and done properly they require maintenance yet properly cared for last Many many years. One of my restorations started at vessel age of 50 plus years, I cruised it for several years then sold it to the present owner who has been dilligent to it and it's still Lovely and cruising 20 plus years later with minimal problems. Also have done restorations to several Steel hull vessels! Hammers are a wonderful tool to determine overall condition However, when there is a situation such as yours! It would be money worth spent and save you expense and effort in the Long term! As stated just an opinion! Yet, A very Qualified Shipwright as well! My comments are for your benefit not mine. I do not own your Vessel. However after 50 plus years in the industry I have seen and done Much with primarily Old Boats. The Coney is Yours and you will do what you want! Just hoping to help, You seem to have much knowledge, I will refrain from any further comments. Best of Luck to you Both

Hydro blasting and laser cleaning are good options what is the cost comparison between the three options. If they are close then look at time which will accomplish the job in the shortest time frame. I tend like hydro blasting because it’s one I know best. But it may not be right for your application or needs.

Such an amazing massive undertaking. New hull perforations keep being discovered while addressing the rusted areas. Is there any way that you can find and repair them all, and those about to occur, before splashing? Finding a perforation after splashing must be a problem. Can you fix new found perforations without hauling out again if new ones become revealed while afloat?
@FlyingConey
@FlyingConey Жыл бұрын
We will spent one day on the cart in the water before completely splashing just to make absolutely sure there is no water coming in. Also most holes opened up while welding, because off the heat. So there is no risk that we go back into the water and suddenly a big hole appears.

If you planning on sandblasting you definitely need to rent out an industrial sand blaster set up. and I wouldn't Sandblast the boat unless you absolutely need to. Also don't buy a five or ten gallon metal pot to do sandblasting with, that type of set up with take you forever to sandblast with. I think what your doing with grinding the welded area and paint rolling is the right way to go about it. Yeah its a slow tendinous job but your getting there before long you'll be back in the water than you can take your time doing what needs to be done.

Thank you! We always try to do the jobs the way they need to be done. Of course there are multiple ways to skin a cat but always try to do it right and to do our research first. We also have to focus on project management and priorities. That means to get the CVO renewed and to have a ship that is safe to sail on the sea. Still a lot to do but sandblasting isn't necessary. What is necessary is to de-rust the waterline because rust and salt water just love each other... I do think the Tercoo was the best tool for the job but it was an immensely tough job! I hope you'r enjoying the journey!

Sand blasting (once you are in an appropriate location) may be too invasive for the old girls steel hull. There are other materials that can be used (besides sand) that may work better for your application. I don’t have much experience with it. I’ve just seen it used in automobile restorations where the thickness of the metal is typically thinner than a ships hull.

I would be extremely nervous about this hull having metal rot like the new hole that showed up. The metal in this hull is way past its prime and once you have the pressure from the water pushing on this hull plus the extreme pressure of the sea twisting and moving the ship how safe is this hull . If a hole the size of the holes you've already found decides to open up off shore in a storm this boats bilge pumps will not be able to keep her afloat . It's commendable to want to save an old ship, but there's comes a time when you must ask yourself how safe or reasonable is it to try to repair a ship with this much damage. I personally would not feel safe taking this boat with all its problems off shore.
