• The Jimmy Durante Show...

Additopnal Facts.
Jimmy Durante was 66, Ray Bolger 55 and Eddie Hodges 12 when this show was broadcast in December 1959 -- two years before the first of Eddie's string of six hits was released. They were "I'm Gonna Knock On Your Door" (#12 in 1961), "Bandit Of My Dreams" (#51 in 1962), "(Girls Girls Girls) Made To Love" (#14 in 1962), "Halfway" (#116 in 1963), "New Orleans" (#44 in 1965) and "Love Minus Zero" (#134 in 1965). The first, third and fifth are quite good and highly memorable.. .
Eddie Hodges was drafted into the Army during the Vietnam War in the late 1960s, but remained in the USA in a non-combat assignment. After he was discharged, he returned to Hollywood and became disillusioned with show business. He decided to return to his native Mississippi and entered The University of Southern Mississippi where he received his B.A. in Psychology and an M.S. in Counseling.[2] He became and is still a mental health counselor. He converted to the Roman Catholic faith in 1998. He is divorced and has two grown children and four grandchildren. He occasionally gets in touch with his old show business friends and still writes songs, though he is unable to play guitar due to spinal nerve injuries. Hodges rode out Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and informed his fans that he was fine after being without water, electricity and telephone/internet contact for 19 days when the utilities were restored. He enjoys hearing from fans and makes occasional appearances around the USA.

Durante, Bolger, and Hodges are pure delights singing and dancing to TOGETHER. This was no throw away number at all. They worked on it! And what terrific results!

Delightful! Up to January 2021, 3 of the 5 stars here were still alive over 60 years after this was broadcast. RIP Jimmie Rodgers.

There seems to be a real warmth on these old shows. The stars are worthy of the name too. Today's artists could learn a lot from them.

Yes it was in color, as part of a series called "Sunday Showcase" most were live presentations or live on tape. Apparantly only b&w kinescopes survive.

I'm quite sure, 'Hold', that the December 6, 1959 Sullivan show exists (either on videotape or kinescope) in the Sullivan/Andrew Solt archives...of course, there were no such luxuries as "DVR"'s or "time shifting" in 1959. The best the average viewer could do was record the audio portion from your TV set on a reel-to-reel audio recorder while it was telecast...or, if you were someone like Red Skelton, had possession of a reel-to-reel video recorder [cumbersome AND expensive!].
