During WWII, Mr Durante was touring for the USO. He only had time to perform about 15 minutes of his material. When he got on stage, he sang, played, danced and joked his heart out for the troops for 40 minutes. After his final bow, he rushed off stage. His manager asked him why he performed for so long. Durante said "I saw two soldiers, one who lost his left arm, and one who lost his right arm, sitting together, so they could both clap their hands. I Figured, those brave guys did their best. So giving them my best was the least I could do." What a classy guy.

I saw Jimmy Durante in concert back in 1966 and he brought a joy to the room that was almost visible. The night before, I was at a reception for him and met him briefly.; As soon as he walked into the room, he gathered a bunch of us around the piano and we sang all kinds of good old songs, including "Inka-Dinka-Doo" while he played. It remains one of my very favorite memories!

When young, school kids made terrible fun of his nose, from what I have read. He took a "negative," changed the perspective on it, and made people love him, in part, because of his particular physical characteristic. What a great lesson. Nobody in show business had a bad word to say about James Francis Durante.

I am truly amazed by some of the negative comments I see here. Needless to say, I have a far different opinion. With TV and radio, Jimmy was a regular part of our family. I will always be thankful I had a chance to see him in person at the no longer existent Valley Music Hall . . By the way, you guys with your negative comments, How come I've never heard of you? Were you on stage? TV? Radio? What was your contribution toward making entertainment better??? Yeah. I thought so. You can't do it yourself so you knock someone who could. Sit down and be quiet.

Jimmy Durante was considered to be the one of the most loved entertainers. He was also a talented musician - and he made movies. I'm not sure of the years, but he also had a successful TV show. My parents were big fans, as were most Americans. Other entertainers sang his Inka Dinka Doo, as a tribute. ( Like Ann-Margret.) Anyway, he is part of the American culture.

Jerry Johnson I think the reason is that each entertainer worked on their own persona. They did not act in a comedy, they were the comedy. The Schnoz was the Schnoz and nobody else. Pure honesty.
@jerryj9209 жыл бұрын
Harry McNicholas I agree. By the same token, back then even if you had similar acts; i.e...Burns and Allen, Ozzie and Harriet, Jack Benny...there was something, maybe just one thing, that made them different than one another...also, when your comedy / writing stands the test of time; Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, shows like 'Barney Miller,' that's more proof right there. Thank you for your reply, Mr McNichols. Blessings
