This is way better than the other methods I saw where you screw on a piece of scrap wood over the hole to have something for the arbor. Nice.

Especially if you drill metal
@bhamsoxfan72
@bhamsoxfan72 7 ай бұрын
That wouldn't work as well because you're drilling\sawing "blind" (you don't know exactly where the hole underneath is doing to be). However, if you drilled the correct size hole in the scrap first, then held the scrap over the actual workpiece, you can take the pilot bit out of the arbor and the scrap piece will keep your hole saw bit in the correct position. Alternatively, I just saw one where the guy took the round scrap he had just drilled and put it halfway on the pilot bit, then the round scrap would stay in the hole until the bigger hole saw bit got started.

Opened an old hole i didn't have the original size for, just cut a hole of the new size in a piece of scrap plywood and centered it over the one i needed to expand worked fine

It blows my mind how many people in construction don’t know this. That is literally the reason that hole saws get shallower the wider they get, so the size down from it can be used as a pilot bit if required.
