I wish my dad was alive to see this. He was a Pontiac Mechanic beginning in the mid fifties until mid seventies until he opened his own shop but still was Pontiac to the core. He would of loved seeing this and probably had some comments to make. He wouldn't have liked your Holley carbs as he didn't like them when I started using them. He always called them God damn Ford carburetors!! Quadrajet man. Especially a Carter and I have to give him credit, he could tune the F out of them. Cherish your time with your dad. Every time I ran into a snag that was who I would call. Great memories and knowledge that has to learned. I remember one time when I couldn't get a cam out and called him. He walked into my garage looked at the engine and right away said take off the fuel pump! I was like WTF!! How did I miss that? Something so simple. Idiot!! He just laughed as he turned and walked out of the garage. Not my proudest moment but one I will never forget. Keep it up Bro, you are doing great. Hope some big things happen for you going forward. JD is a lucky kid and you are a Lucky dad to have him so interested at such a young age.

You need to place something under each valve to keep them from moving and the springs will compress enough to remove the keepers.

Looks like you made a good investment in that car for $200.00. Quite a few parts on it worth that alone. Also amazing that the motor can be saved. Let us know if they have to sleeve that one cylinder. Watching all of your old videos on this build and subscribed. Looks like you got a good shop hand. Thanks for sharing. 👍

Just happened on the channel. This is fantastic stuff. I used to work on my own vehicles when I was too poor to hire out, but now that I can afford to hire out, I want to start working on my vehicles again...and this content is fantastic (I'd put it up there with vice grip garage). I've got a K body blazer and a 96 dodge ram with the cummins engine sitting on the property, and considering they are beat up (but not shot up!), I'm inspired to dig into them. Cheers, and looking forward to more content!

Sending the original engine parts to Butler Performance is a great move. Never used them but from what I read & watched about them, they seem to be the premier or very close to it Pontiac engine builder in the country. In the late 70's & early 80's a guy named Nunzi Romano was known as the Pontiac guru. I believe he was based in New York city. He built many incredible SD-455 engines

My coil is close to my trans dipstick and once I checked the fluid and touched my arm to the connectors by accident. It literally knocked me on my a$& and I hit my head, not fun and proof these high energy ignition systems pack some voltage!!

back in the day there was a valve spring tool that was like a "C" clamp, had an end that went over the valve head and then there was the part that went over the spring, you then operated the device by levering the tool, it pressed down on the spring while supporting the valve head, frees the retainers every time with no problems.

I don’t mean to be a smarty pants but a proper valve spring compressor pushes against the face of the valve and pushes the spring down at the same time. The compressor you are using is for “head on the engine” use and requires you to used compressed air (or a piece of rope) to keep the valve from opening. A stuck valve would be helpful the way you are doing it. Really dig the car by the way and where you’re goin with it. I drove a ‘70 GTO for more than 20 years. South Carolina, to California, Ohio to the Florida gulf coast. Several engines, 350 to 455, manual and auto trans at different times, 2:73-3:55 gears Highway to drag strip. Sold it during a divorce in 2003 and still miss it a lot. It was an oddball, born a stripper, power nothing, a 455 and 3speed manual. Oddly, the 400/auto got the best time in 1/8 mile. Got a picture hanging in the garage. Maybe another one in the future.

Well that was a lot fun 😂 ,but you got it done. Back when I was younger and didn't have any tools, I made a spring compressor out of big old C clamp. Had my neighbor weld two old sockets on each end and then I cut a channel in one socket with a hacksaw to pick out the keeper. Did my first head job on a 283 small block with that and a Motors manual 👨‍🔧 .

Yes a pressure washer is handy. used ours today washing the H farmall. Ive always wanted one of those hot water pressure washers. Ive bought a half dozen at auctions and none of them where any good. I use oven cleaner on the hard crusty baked on stuff. Why not fix that trans yourself? Back decades ago we had very little money. and we had a ford van we worked out of. the C4 trans went bad. only had reverse. So we pulled it out and took it apart. Had a couple more junk ones so we took them all apart. And using the best parts made a trans. Used reverse clutches in the foreward drums. and it worked pretty good. that was our first one. after that we got junk automatic transmissions and took the apart kept the best parts and sold the junk parts and clean aluminum case's ect for scrap. It dont take special smarts to go thru a automatic trans. The smart guys where the ones that invented designed and made such things.

Dalton ya got me thinkin... I figured out a way to get valves out of Pontiac heads without as much effort. I should make a video of it. That compressor tool kinda sucks, like you said. I've been looking for a single 13 and a single 670, because I have one good one of each, the other side from those engines had severe damage in one cylinder when they dropped valves long before I got them. Mill them to 65cc, port them to 250ish cfm, stainless valves because who wants to trust 50+ year old valves, and throw em on a 455 with flat tops to run on E85. I have some things I need to do before I can sand on the grilles and get them presentable. Haven't forgotten, just busy now that the weather is getting good.

Those Super Coils are OK, better than stock, but they taper off in output as the RPMs go up. It has to do with the saturation and rise time. Over 3000 revs they're not much better than stock. The best coil I've ever used was the Jacob's Ultra Coil. It was a BEAST. They had a nice turns ratio, around 85:1, really great energy output ,90 millijoules and up to 1950 watts as needed at 65kv escape voltage. Sadly they were bought by Mr. Gasket over 20 years ago and the brand was absorbed and folded into the Accel lineup. I think a version of that coil is still available from Accel (or was) but has a 100:1 ratio, still a nice coil though. Problem with most coils, at least the oil filled ones is they're made in China now because of the PCB's in the manufacturing process. The Ultra Coil was epoxy encapsulated and made in USA , even the Accel version supposedly.

You need one of those compressors that goes on both ends of the valve. They'll break loose stubborn keepers. You can get one for about 30 bucks.
