Chautal--char taal (Four Beats) is a particular kind of music originating in India. Indian Diasporas, especially the imperial diasporas, that were taken by the British to several tropical countries, to work on plantations, carried the songs and celebrations with them. So, Chautal, which begins on Basant Panchami and ends 40 days later on Holi, is sung at a different house everyday in the community, bringing joy and happiness to each house. Chautal usually ends with some jokes (practical or otherwise) inserted into the performance of song and dance sequence. The hosts usually provide sweets to the performers and other guests. As Fiji Indian diaspora disperses for several reasons, will such celebrations continue? Chautal is still celebrated in countries such as Mauritius, Guayana, Surinam. In India, it is still celebrated in Bihar and some other states.
