There are elements of holi in it too. Plus it's their new year, around ugadhi/gudi padwa. So apart from the name the festival itself draws from many others, I agree. And it were the southern kingdoms that exported Hinduism to other eastern asian nations, so similarities aren't surprising.

But you're right, Thai Songkran (also Cambodian, Vietnamese, Lao, Burmese, North-East Indian etc.) and equivalent festivals are more like Bengali Shonkranti, Assamese Bihu, or Kannada/Telugu Ugadi. All are basically Hindu new year festivals celebrated on Mesha Sankranti, not Makar Sankranti. There are several Sankranti dates every year (at least 3, iirc) with different nakshatra rashis/zodiacs. These are sidereal astronomical events, not the birthday of an imaginary person which continues to dictate time and date for all of humanity till this day.
