This doll is exquisite! As for the basket, it is entirely appropriate for this doll. Baskets are used in many parts of Sub Saharan Africa. If you didn’t see baskets, something would be wrong. As for no shoes, that is entirely appropriate. If she were in Nairobi, Mombasa, or other large cities-you could expect to see more shoes. The surprising thing to me was the high heeled feet. JHD, being a smaller company, may not have flat feet yet. Cultural practices are beautiful because they make us unique. And I know Edmond, you are a strong supporter of diversity. While this doll is a fashion doll, she is also representing a different culture-a super cool one too. I love your videos and watch them over and over! New videos are a special treat!

I think diversity is really important. I'm super excited about the basket, because it's something different and unique. It goes really well with the outfit and theme, and it's something that enriches our collection. I don't think it was "lazy from them" not giving her shoes. It's just how it was designed and how it's meant to be. We're talking about JHD toys, not some other company that stars with M...

I know this is from a year ago but I'm getting mine delivered tomorrow so I just ran across this video. Great review, as always. I agree she should have come with shoes if she's standing on her toes. Bare feet should only be on flat feet. Even then sandals would have been great. I'll likely match up some cute shoes and a purse/bag to display mine and use the basket for room decor in a diorama. I just think she's absolutely gorgeous and those colors look amazing on her! I was super excited to find her on sale.

I was so excited to see a dark skinned Anna May that I didn't even think about the fact that she was lacking in some areas, like the shoes and purse. She just seemed very stereotypically African to me, like they probably based her on something they saw but not the appropriate thing, but I dunno, I still like her overall. Now I've got my sights set on the Covergirl Interviewer so I'm glad I held out.

This doll has a lot of great details and I will say I love that they gave her textured hair and dark skin. Her elaborate fashion including those bracelets feel more of a street performer / cultural dancer than someone just shopping. A purse and shoes would have been amazing, but I don't see it as racially bias because the outfit seems inspired by a street performer / dancer

I think the attention to detail is amazing. Just a beautiful doll. The lack of purse does not bother me. Although, I wish she had shoes, I understand how it may not have fit her aesthetic

My biggest complaint is she is shown with nail polish in the promo but the IRL doll doesn't have any. JHD needs to give all their Mizis nail and toe polish and get rid of the rubber hands. Then they'll be able to compete. I do love the Mizi line and will continue to collect her. I don't mind her with the basket instead of a purse but agree she could use sandals! Love your reviews!

I agree about the eyebrow. I wish it was darker. I love her though, the face, the hair, the bracelets,and the necklace. Yes, some sandals would of been better.

First off …outfit is fabulous!! I want to see a “African” inspired doll that’s more accurate.. meaning.. the Africans I know does not have the body or hair like this doll… and where’s the shoes??? People in Africa.. even the villagers have shoes!!!

It's not too much to ask a $100+ fashion doll to have shoes and proper accessories but I appreciate that JHD is attempting to show some diversity. There was a similar controversy with the first black Adonis doll that JHD released named "Moonshine Jungle David". There was a backstory given to explain his name, but it still felt problematic.

Something is very wrong with this decision unless I’m missing something. Unless this doll was based on less modern times in Kenya, there’s no reason why she shouldn’t have a purse and shoes. There’s a lot of racism alive today it’s super ridiculous. Most people in Kenya wear shoes so I dont understand. This doll’s look appears to be high fashion which means she’d have enough money for shoes of some sort. There is such a lack of respect for folks with darker skin than others. Honestly I’m ticked off about it. I’ll never buy this brand of doll because of this. The doll is cute but I passed on her.
