Lovely place Graham. It must have been an enormous swimming pool where that hotel is now built on. That's if it covered the whole area. Nice chalets too. 👍

It was a good old-fashioned open air pool with the changing cubicles round the side.

Thanks, there are some excellent beaches round that part of the coast. Very popular with surfers.

That view of the ocean is amazing. I've only been to Canada's west coast so I guess I really haven't seen that ocean yet

Well I haven't seen the Pacific, I nearly did. When we were in the USA we did travel across to the Rocky Mountains but didn't go any further west. I hadn't really thought about it before, but I have just looked at a map and my list of seas I have swum in is North Atlantic, Caribbean, Gulf of Mexico (possibly), Mediterranean, Red Sea, Indian Ocean. I shall have to write that down somewhere, so I can tell the grandkids 😁

@@GrandadsOtherChannel well so far it's only been the pacific ocean for me but I'm hoping to move to prince Edward Island so I can go swimming in the Atlantic Ocean next unless I get to go visit my friend in Thailand before then. He wants me to come work with him and I definitely want to.

Thailand would be interesting, although there are plenty of political issues. I used to follow a KZbin channel of a chap who had moved there to be an English teacher.

@@GrandadsOtherChannel I think I used to watch that same guy. I know some of the issues and that is part of the problem with me getting the work permit. For me to get the permit and my friend needs some permits also he was told that he would have to hire 10 more people from Thailand. His business was able to sustain that before covid and he thinks it will be soon able to again.

I've always wanted to move to a village like the one on doc Martin or the village from last of the summer wine. I guess any little village in the United Kingdom would be fine.

I guess that depends on what you expect. Obviously, in those series, it is a fantasy world that doesn't exist. Most little villages suffer from a lack of jobs and most of the houses are holiday lets or second homes for the well paid city dwellers, so the locals have low incomes and cannot afford to buy a house in their own village. That causes a certain amount of tension between locals and incomers. Of course, as the locals can no longer afford to live in their own villages, they have to leave, so outside holiday season, they become ghost towns. Another issue with seaside towns is big cities started shipping their "social problems" to them, helping to fill up the hotels that would otherwise have been empty during the closed season. That meant regular income for the hotel owners, but also meant an influx of people who already had no jobs into an area where there were no jobs to be had. Westward Ho! has always been a holiday village. HISTORY. Westward Ho! was created as a holiday destination in the mid 1860's. A consortium of thirteen business people created a company "The Northam Burrows Hotel and Villa Company", brought some land then constructed a grand hotel. www.visitwestwardho.co.uk/history

@@GrandadsOtherChannel that is just sad. I guess I want a nice place to retire to but now I have to rethink where. I definitely prefer the company of working people over business people so I'm not sure now

It is just a fact of life. I lived in this area from 1994 to 2008. With most of the customers I met, the first words out of their mouths would be "When we moved here from" and it would be followed by the name of some big city. I was exactly the same, I had been asked if I would like to take over a manager's job in the area and jumped at the chance, fully intending to stay there when I retired, but life events meant we had to move back to the city. My daughter was very subtle about the area, she said it was where old people go to die.

There were people living there until quite recently (last few years) but I don't think they did any maintenance work. The local holiday park owner has bought it now and will probably do it up for holiday lets.
