I keep my table saw at my dad's shop because I don't have room for it at my house. Yesterday, he told me he had sold it. My plan: Buy another one and put it in the exact same spot in his shop because I still don't have room for one at my house.

I got a friend (carpenter) one of these kreg tools for her birthday, she says it's a stable in her toolbox now. Even though she's got lots of more expensive measuring tools at her workshop, she likes its compact size and multifunctionality, she says it's usually accurate enough so she doesn't have to go get something else

I have both the Kreg measuring tool and the Irwin square. Just get them. You'll use them constantly.

Had a rather stressfull day yesterday and just went to bed. Got up this morning and saw this offering from Rex and thought I'd watch it with the first coffee of the day. Bad idea and I should have known better. Almost straight away he had me chuckling and then he leapt to the table saw and I spat coffee everywhere 🤣 Thank you Rex for helping shrug off the remnants of a bad day. Hope you, yours and all your followers have a great time over the coming month from Scotland.

Quick tip for dovetailing with chisels, if you buy a cheap vintage chisel, i use a stanley 5005, and take the handle of then you can use a hammer with the accuracy of short wood handle.

highly recommend getting a honing guide I have gotten a lot of planes off estate sales, and even had someone hand me a plane with a hand sharpened iron. all were horrible. glass, sandpaper, and a honing guide and you'll think it was sharpened on a CNC

of all the gifts that honing guide and the heavy duty table saw that come with it would be the perfect touch for my birthday. For the unstable chisel holding there's a trick I learned from Chinese woodworkers: hold the chisel by the handle as usual, to fine adjust it's cutting position you just wiggle the chisel left to right, back and forth, basically you're making the chisel walk on the workpiece and the two corners of the cutting edge would be its feet. also Rex, since when you adopt that Chinese frame saw? how did you like it?

I've used the scribe. I like scribes, picks, and marking knives though.

I re-handled a bunch of regular carpenter chisels. The old stanleys are really good quality. The blade is shorter and with a 4" handle it ends up being perfect for a regular sized hand to hold on the handle, kick the pinky out to brace the tip, and hit on the butt right above where your hand is grabbing.

Honestly, I'm never even sure whether I need to freshen up my honing compound. Every so often I'll think "hmm, it's completely black now (from metal) and I put another layer on. But honestly I don't know for sure if it even makes a difference, it's more an emotional validation that I'm for sure going to be honing well.

If you use a cheap-ass square, make sure it's square. I had trouble for ages and couldn't figure out why my joints weren't accurate. Then I finally discovered my square was way too far off of square. OMG. Hours of troubles could have been avoided if I'd just checked it initially. Also, sawing out dovetail waste is so much quicker than chiseling it out. Coping saws are cheap. Love your channel.
@danielh123459 ай бұрын
For other people finding this comment, easy way to test is to find a known flat edge to rest your square against. Put a piece of paper underneath the ruler, draw a line, flip the square over so the ruler is on the other side of the line. If the edge of your ruler is now able to perfectly follow that line your square is actually square. Also, make sure your paper doesn't move haha

Finally gave in Rex, ordered them diamond stones. I'll be a little sad. If these hold up remotely close to the $500, I've already invested into stones. Too bad these weren't around when I was getting started. Seems to good to be true.
@jakobvanklinken10 ай бұрын
If you already have whetstones, why invest in these diamond ones? Don't mean to cast any judgement here, if there's a reason I'd love to know about it
@timort226010 ай бұрын
@jakobvanklinken I have both types of stones, but I never invested into lower grits stones so now I'll have some plus with how cheap they are I'll hook a buddy up with one and keep one in a tool bag for on jobs. At the end of the day for $20 I'll still have 3 left in the shop that I can beat on for a bit and if they do the same or close enough then I'll be save money as my older stones fail. That's at least my thought process
@timort22609 ай бұрын
After a few days messing with these stones, I wouldn't recommend it unless you're actually a beginner, then sure otherwise they are kinda junk

@c0d3r1f1c10 ай бұрын
I have been considering the Schaaf as a less expensive alternative to the basic narex chisels. $30 vs $80 here in the US. Reviews seem to be okay, and I’m pretty sure anything that’s been flattened and sharpened properly will work for someone starting out.
