A lot of Asian or Southeast Asian dishes originated from China, such as “ramen” which is brought to Edo Japan by Chinese immigrants, or zhajiangmian brought to Korea by Chinese, and also Hainan chicken rice brought by Chinese to Southeast Asia and became their signature dishes. There are a huge Chinese diaspora worldwide, but it seems like it’s only the Asians that are appropriating Chinese dishes. 煲 Bao (claypot) 仔 Zai (little) 饭 Fan (rice) is a famous signature dish originated from Guangdong province as part of Cantonese cuisine, but now appropriated as “Malaysian” when it’s the Chinese that brought this dish to Malaysia and Malaysia has a huge Chinese diaspora. 海南 Hainan 鸡 Ji (chicken) 饭 Fan (cooked rice). There are two ways to say “rice” in Chinese. Uncooked raw rice is called 米 mǐ, and cooked rice is called 饭 fàn. The Sino-Japanese word for fàn (cooked rice) is han, as they call cooked rice as gohan (honorable rice) and fried rice as cha han 炒饭 (chǎo fàn). Rice, noodles, dumplings, soy sauce, bean curd doufu (tofu in Sino-Japanese), tea, mocha (matcha in Sino-Japanese), hotpot, chopsticks, rice noodles fen (pho in Sino-Vietnamese), lamian (ramen in Sino-Japanese) which means “pulled noodles), zhajiangmian (jjajangmyon in Sino-Korean), are all Chinese inventions and signature dishes. You can google search for their invention history. Japan, Korea and Vietnam are collectively called the Sinosphere. More specifically, Japanese culture is a replica of the Tang Dynasty culture, and Korean culture is a replica of the Ming Dynasty culture. Google search for “Japanese missions to Tang Dynasty” and “Japanese missions to imperial China”. Korea was a Ming Dynasty vassal state. The founder of Ming Dynasty Zhu Yuanzhang granted Korean kings the privilege to copy the Chinese Ming Dynasty clothes, which is why Korean male hanbok looks so similar to the Ming Dynasty male Hanfu. But one thing different is that Korean kings’ hanbok cannot have the dragon pattern, which is only reserved to Chinese emperors. The Chinese emperors’ clothes are called 龙 long(dragon) 袍 pao (robes). Only Chinese emperors can have the dragon pattern on their imperial robes. China is intentionally vilified all over the world as a Japanese and American conspiracy at the end of WWII, using “anti communism” as an excuse to de-sinicize (removing the name “China” out of their inventions and cultural elements), culturally genociding and carving Chinese cultural elements and make Sinospheric cultures Japan, Korea and Vietnam take all the credits Chinese lamian becomes “Japanese ramen”. Chinese zhajiangmian becomes “Korean jjajangmyon”. Chinese rice noodles fen invented during the Qin Dynasty becomes “Vietnamese pho”. Essentially they want to make people hate China and forget about China and to think that China is the “copycat” when it’s exactly the opposite. That’s the whole point of all those funded internet troll armies trolling your videos and other Chinese videos talking crap and asking “how much you get paid by CCP”. Those are anti China propaganda bots, many are Japanese remaining in Taiwan at the end of 50 years of colonization, assuming Chinese last names and pretending to be “Taiwanese”. They are in the 1450 internet army funded by the Japanese colonizer party DPP in Taiwan. Basically all Japanese and American military alliances have these anti China bots working from Japan, South Korea, Philippines, India, Taiwan province of China and USA. They believe lies told long enough and loud enough, people will believe them. It’s sad. But I am glad more and more people come to see the anti China lies propagated in the west. Merry Christmas, Ken. Greetings from Los Angeles from a Chinese American. 🎉

Hi, I am from Belgium, living in South-Africa, and I find your trips and videos amazing. Very informative and pleasant to watch. Although retired now, I would most certainly have picked China as a place to work and live for a while. Great to see that you can enjoy life there, without any criminality. I also would not mind the cameras, as they are there for a good reason. And in any case, we already have a Big Brother, through google and facebook - so what the hell. China simply looks amazing! Good to see you are in Sanya finally 😊. Sanya is really a great place for winter. The hotel you stay has the best sea food buffet in the entire island of Hainan. Hainan chicken rice is a creation of the oversea Chinese in Southeast Asia who migrated there from Hainan, but you can’t really find the exact in Hainan. The Bay in front of your hotel is called Sanya Bay, which is the longest, but the water is not very good. The best beach with crystal clean warm water is at Yalong bay, but is almost completely occupied by luxury hotels with only a small section open for the public. The fanciest hotels are at Haitang Bay to the north of Downtown Sanya. In my opinion, the hotels with nicer beach and better value is at Dadonghai, very close to downtown Sanya. Sanya is very popular for Russian tourists. I run into them all the time when I came to Sanya. Hope you enjoyed your stay in Hainan, and have a very happy Christmas.

Finally saw western youtuber visit my hometown, Hainan island. The only tropical beautiful island in China. We just came back from six weeks vacation in Hainan, there were 4-5 typhoons going through, weather was not the best, but Sanya barely got affected, still sunny and beautiful. You are at Haiyue Square 海月广场 in Sanya, we lived there two weeks, it will be very noisy at night but interesting. Suggesting you visit Dadong Hai大东海 beach where lots Russian tourists, the beach there is more beautiful, the sand is white like and water is more cleaner. It’s just 6-8 km away. And Yalong Bay(亚龙湾) it’s the BEST beach in Sanya. If you have time, there’s an artificial island called Haihua dao (Seaflower island), on the northwest of Hainan, which can beat Dubai Palm island.. 100% suggestion. Overall, have fun in Hainan and remember to bargain (as Hainan is a tourist place the prices there overall higher than mainland 🙂

Actually many Russian tourists come to Sanya. You should be able to see them at the beach! Besides local residents, there’re many retired people from north China come for winter, especially a lot from the northeast. Those who play musical instruments by the sea should be this group of people. They either own or rent an apartment and spend 3-6 months here each year. As long as you don’t come during Chinese New Year, Sanya is an ideal holiday destination.

I was in Hainan in 2014 working (photographing for a US hotel chain). When I landed on the island I had a cough that just got worse. I asked the front desk if there was a doctor nearby and was told my best option was to go to a hospital a few miles away. My assistant and I got a taxi and drove thru agricultural landscapes and suddenly, out of nowhere, loomed this big and brand new building. There was literally nothing around but a parking lot and this hospital. Everyone there was accommodating and nice and professional and I quickly saw a doctor who prescribed antibiotics. I couldn't understand why this giant hospital was in the middle of nowhere. I asked a local person who was at the front desk of the hotel and he said "Oh, many VIP generals and politicians visit here and they built that in case any of the VIP fall ill...." Of course, I don't know if this is the reason but it did make sense to me. Enjoy watching all your travels!

Here is my observation: some Uyghur vendors do not display their prices and ask for higher prices for foreign travelers like you (I call it a scam), and they insisted on selling you some food you did not want initially, although they smiled. You also encountered Uyghur drivers in Xingjian asking much higher prices for their taxi services, but you did not encounter such a scam in the east part of China. Don't get me wrong; I am not saying that some Uyghurs are selfish. There are also selfish people in Han Chinese. I speculate that the Chinese government is softer on enforcing laws and rules on Uyghurs. Next time when I travel to China, I'll avoid them.

This kinds of thing happens not just to foreigners, but also to Han Chinese. In fact, a lot of Han Chinese are complaining that the Chinese government are too tolerant to Uyghurs.

Nice short getaway from the cold for a change Ken.Really enjoyed the tour around Hainan Island. The Hainanese is equally good with their skill of brewing tea too.👍I'm very impressed with the room size,it looks more like an apartment rather than a hotel room.😁Enjoy the warmth of your loved ones back in Germany during this holiday season and A Merry Christmas to you and family Ken.🌲✨️🎅💕🇲🇾

Thank you as always for your truthful report. There are some suggestions for you. For foreigners, I suggest you eat food from stores/chain stores, which is 10% -20% more expensive at most, but the quality is very good. In addition, there are many local apps in China, such as Didi for taking a taxi and Dianping for dining. Dianping offers many discounts, at least 20% cheaper and up to 80% cheaper, which is very cost-effective. Finally, I wish you and your family a happy Christmas

The majority of Foreigners in Hainan are the Russians and there're some Koreans too, that's all. Actually it's expensive compared to SEA, many working class Chinese usually will choose Thailand over Hainan if they want to go to some tropical beaches. Those who play music on the street are retired people, so it's their retired life. There's a large Uyghur enclave on the Island, as Xinjiang is dry and cold, many Uyghurs choose to migrate to Hainan for humid and sunny weather after they retire. Another thing is that Hainan has a muslim population as you see at the night market, I think it's part of the reason these retired Uyghurs choose Hainan instead of other Southern coastal provinces, it's easier for them to get Halal foods.

Fun fact: Hainanese chicken rice is not a specialty of Hainan, but was actually invented by the Chinese in Singapore. It is called Hainanese chicken rice because at first the chicken they used was from Wenchang, Hainan.
