"If you use metaphors make sure you explain them". She said it as like an after thought, but it might be the best advice here.
@mr.k905
@mr.k905 6 ай бұрын
It always gives me the feeling that the singer thinks I'm an idiot when he explains his metaphors. Just making sure in case the listener is too stupid to understand it. I don't think that's good advice at all. Of course you shouldn't write gibberish whose meaning nobody understands, but it's the very function of metaphors not to be overtly explained. If you have to explain a metaphor, it's simply not good enough. It's like explaining jokes or commenting on comments.

Could we do an opposite video of this please. When you have a poem or lyrics of some kind and need to come up with a melody. This is where I'm having the most trouble.

@@theviper1999uk i don't think this person specifically wants to turn poems into songs i believe they're like a "lyrics-first" writer, and now they wish to write melodies to those lyrics i could definitely be wrong, but i think that's where the comment was coming from. in which case, it would be tremendously helpful to a lot of songwriters

i may be off base but if your lyrics first , wouldn't you just take the rhythm of how you phrase a line and add note value to that phrase, then once you have note value just slide them notes up on the staff for desired pitch I could be way off base but sounds logical to me I'm in the process of learning on my own, have been for years now. long road, but worth it

I'm fascinated by songwriting. What made me look up this is recently finding out Tevin Campbell's Tomorrow song was first released as an instrumental 13 years prior by the Brothers Johnson. I was inpressed by how the lyrics were written to match the melody of the song.

i miss the artist series, i would love to see Friedemann analyze more artists. The song series was a bit too dense for me. Studying a group or an artist is just more VAST. infact VAST is a good band. A Tame impala episode would be sweet.. tons of good ones though like Panic at the disco, Bring Me The Horizon, Nothing but Thieves, Crumb, Hatebreed. It takes a whole lot of study to make that series but that is why they are a great, repeatable view. i go back through his artist series every now, tons of content and nuggets of wisdom for creatives

I've been writing and composing for 40 years. I can't really say I've ever followed a "method". It seems that my subconscious mind really creates the best songs. When it comes to me the songs seems complete, I hear it playing in my head and I just have to capture and record it as quickly as possible. I have 60 demos on my KZbin channel "Frank Coffey Songs" and they don't even have a single style to them, just all over the place.

Great video, awesome information and very helpful, BUT it is not what most song writers do? start mumbling searching for the words that fit the melody, it would be more interesting to see those great writers that get the lyrics first then the melody, is not how most hit songs are made? lyrics then melodies, what i would like to see is how writers fit the melody to the lyrics. Like Berklee and Pat Pattison teaches, writing lyrics from a title. etc. It would be awesome to see a video similar to this but setting melodies to lyrics.

That bridge would need something in between to work lol But great video overall. I used to right songs like this but I think it can get tricky of you're not writing ballads and there's lots going on. Ballads tend to sound great with just nice chords and a steady voice. In a lot of situations you are putting the melody and vocals over existing elements outside of just chords. Still I think playing on a piano or guitar is good for shaping out the song especially for writing chorus melodies since they help bring the emotion out

It's always great to see how writing can happen from pieces (in this case the neat of melody). I have up on lyrics a long time ago, but sometimes have the guitar or a virtual instrument play the melody in my music. If it's possible, more colla notation with Andrea would be great. I've seen her in Berklee videos and think content like this is great. I may even write songs with words.again!

For me, it's usually the case that I can think of parts on the piano that are very melody-heavy, so less just the rhythm, a melody. Exactly this melody gives me difficulties and so in the future I will only work with chord progressions, what a pity if I have to do without the beautiful melodies on the piano. Is there also an approximation of how melodies can be dealt with?
