Finishing a song was 1 of the biggest hurdles for me, I held myself back for years on song ideas without ever finishing them. If any of you are sticking to a small set of 1-10 songs and trying to make them work for months, my advice would be to just accept them as they are, set aside a final day and learn to finish it and let go. That process isn't easy for a beginner, but you'll be so happy you finished and can move on to make something greater. Think of it like a painter, they paint 100s of art pieces before they get the hang of it, and our writing is no different.

You mentioned being annoyed when a song does a lot of build-up without proper pay-off. A song I've heard get accused of this a lot is Sad Clown by Panic at the disco. I understand the critique even if I actually like the song. The usual flack it gets is that huge chunks of the song sounds like a pre-chorus which includes the chorus itself. It would be interesting to hear your take on it sometime and why you think it works or not.
