Really enjoyable footage. In the late 1990s I spent many a night in the Museum Hotel in Delft and Woerden Castle has offices that were occupied by a company called Logica until they went bust 1992ish. Can't wait to get back over there once things settle down and enjoy all the great things you did on your vacation - recreational cycling is great and the Netherlands is the perfect country to do it!

One of my three greatest pleasures - in addition to cooking and gardening - is riding a bike in the Netherlands - it's so freeing, and every resident knows how to ride, and rides!

Watching the accident several times I find a strong irregularity: While your right hand previous to the pulling of the brake was posed on the front brake, your left hand was posed on the handlebar, therefore it was unavoidable that you will spin over the bike on a sharp braking action. What is absolutely out of the rule is that the front brake handle was located on the right side of the handlebar. Your body and brain were not mistaken, the bike setup was. Furthermore, it is remarkable that once you started making contact with the floor you instinctively twisted your body to divide along it the impact as if you have been a trained parachutist, extraordinary! Due to this reaction you overcome what had all the potential to become a very serious accident, even death if we take into account you did not wear a helmet. There is a secondary question unclear from the angle of photography, and it is why you made a sharp brake in the first place, but this is secondary, that front brake should have been on the left side.

It was totally my fault, I was paying more attention to getting a good shot from the camera mounted to the back of my wife's bike than to the road. The GoPro has a wide angle, so I had to ride too close to get a good shot. She braked normally and I wasn't ready for it. I ride a motorcycle, so using the left brake, the front of a motorbike, would take most of the weight and speed of a heavy motorcycle. It was just too much for a bicycle. Thanks for your comment.

I loved to see this video!! makes me appreciate my country again for what it is... Next time you come here though, you should come and take a biketrip accros "the Veluwe" !! The nature and the little villages there are beautifull! Oh, and next time use both brakes!! ;-) And you were right, she got that on camera... :-D :-D

I am going next week in the weekend on a biking trip with my 13 years old daughter to Otterlo, we go to sleep in a tiny popup tent on a nature camping. It is our first time we do that. She is having a simple granny bike. It is 30 km away from our home. It is her dream to do this, she loves biking and nature. The rest of the family doesn't like to join. She doesn't want that the stuff will be brought buy car, otherwise it is not real. If she likes this so much then I think we do it more often to other places and I think that I have to buy another good second hand bike for her with acceleration.

The company is Dutch Bike Tours. They offer all kinds of tours around the Netherlands. They give you the bike, maps, the hotel and take a bag of luggage to your next stop. Where you go during the day is up to you. My wife and I rode by ourselves, sometimes encountering other riders from the same company, but it was not a group ride. Most days we followed their suggested route, but some days we took the train further than we could have gone in a single day to see some other area, like Scheveningen beach. Or went off the route to see something interesting like with the Curquis. The hotels were great and the bikes were easy to ride. I recommend going. The bike culture and paths are amazing and make it much easier than the same kind of ride here in the US would be. No day was ever too arduous, the landscape is easy to ride on and the bike path system is something every country should have.

Started out in Amsterdam. Went to Haarlem for a night, then to Leyden. The next day we took the train to Den Haag and rode to Scheveningen then to Delft for a night. To Gouda for the cheese market, spent a day riding around the Gouda Woods on the way to Woerden for a night. From there back to Amsterdam.

9:27 "First firearm assassination." William the Silent in 1584 William the Silent being considered the Father of the Fatherland (Dutch: Vader des Vaderlands) here in The Netherlands, we all learned about that assassination. Somehow I never thought about it being the first of its kind. According to Wiki technically it was the 2nd firearm assassination. The 1st being James Stewart, 1st Earl of Moray in 1570 in Scotland. It was the 1st assassination with a handgun apparently. The 3rd would only be in 1812. 2,5 centuries later. Edit: Beautiful video BTW. I'm glad to see you apparently had a good time.
