A few weeks after returning from the Canning Stock Route I had the urge to do a short track on my own, to review the Land Cruiser, and to experience a slice of outback in solitude. This is the Holland Track, a three day track where the start point was less than a day's drive from my home in Perth, Western Australia. The track was a lot of fun, and makes an enjoyable story.
4XOVERLAND is the world's largest truly global 4WD based expedition channel. It is hosted by well known explorer and filmmaker, Andrew St Pierre White.

Just wanted to say a thank you to you, Andrew. Just arrived back from the Holland track solo. Thanks to your invaluable advice, it gave me the knowledge to do the trip with confidence. Knowing how to negotiate specific challenges on the track came from all your videos I have enjoyed and absorbed the tips and procedures to get out of a lot of problems on the track. I also believe it is what you have said about knowing your vehicle and its limitations. My 2008 Ford Ranger I dare to say, makes me look good as a 4wder. Thankyou once again.

What a wonderful way to start the new year. Having recently returned from my own expedition where I spent 4 weeks filming my trip, I’ve realised just how difficult doing the whole thing by yourself actually is. I know you’ve been doing it a long time, but I tip my hat to you Andrew, you have a knack of being able to turn anything into a thoroughly engrossing & entertaining film. Love your work! Happy New Year Andrew! :)

Typical stone between the disc brake. I have had this several times. terrible sound. best you can drive a bit back and then drive back to the front. and you repeat this several times. and then the stone usually comes loose. good video like always.

Andrew little sand particles hooks up between the back plate and the brake disc, creates that type of funny scriching noises, it once happened to me, I was driving a L/Rover 110 tdi, it is disc brakes all round, I was driving in a bandit prone area and was actually becoming late, the road was muddy and we were 102 kms to our night stop place, and I was carrying team of donors, and I couldn't go under the vehicle to check out, I stopped hurriedly went under the vehicle and nothing was visible, it produce a sound and went off and the noise disappear for good

Brake related sound, I think it's either a rock rubbing in-between the disc guard and the disc, or bent guard rubbing on the disc or brake pad glue has given way and the friction surface has fallen off and it's grinding mental on metal as pads always have little drag, I diagnose this stuff everyday as a mechanic but It's not good when in the outback alone with no spare parts!! :( Great video I would love to be able to do what you do.

Not a rock - a piece of wood in the brake disc. It almost burns when "polished" by brake disc , it sticks to disc a lot better than an irregular shape rock, high temp makes it very hard. The noise is incredibly loud . Louder than a rock and a bit different sound
@priosminimus6969
@priosminimus6969 6 жыл бұрын
First thought from the frequency: brake disc. Shafts sounds way deeper. Just knock on them to compare the sound. Then: make sharp turns to get the wheels turn faster and slower - this way you can maybe also localise damaged drive train parts or bearings. And then, the easiest, without taking the wheels off: just jack them up and let them spin - by hand or engine if it's an unlocked permanent 4wd or the rear axle. Because if you take them off, you might not be able to spin it easily. The one with the rock should be harder to turn or simply make the sound. I know it's always easy to talk smart when you sit comfortly in front of the screen ;-)

Andrew, you must of just missed us, we saw that disco with the blown tyres too. as for your noise i think it was a stone or stick stuck between the rotor and backing plate, i have had the same a few times and it drives me insane every time it happens. Question, you used to have the soft shower ensuite and now you have the hard cover, any reason for the change? i am in the middile of fitting emu wings to my patrol to do the same mod you have done i think it was a brillant mod. For $80,000 and almost 50 years of engineering development, is it not too much to ask for Toyota to provide the 70 series with a centre diff lock and permanent all wheel drive. Seriously, the Classic Rangie had it in 1970, Gwagen in '79 and Defender in the mid-80s.

Andrew, I love your work, and for selfish reasons, I`m going to mention something, that ensures you have the health to continue creating it. The human body, like vehicles, has a design, and a maintenance schedule. When looking at suitable fuels, for optimum health, well being and longevity, you won`t find Coca cola, packet noodles, processed cheese, and man made processed items. Its not the fuel the human body was designed for. Leads to head aches, circulation issues, strokes, and heart attacks, to say the least. You are more qualified than most, to know what the wrong fuel would mean in your 4x4 vehicle. Plenty of human body mechanics in Australia.

Nice video as usual. The tyre conundrum with Land Rover says so much about where they have gone. I was a life long Land Rover fan but no more. 76 LandCruiser is now my steed. If you are saying you are the best 4X4 what are you doing fitting low profile tyres to your vehicles? People buy 4x4 who don't know about off roading or tyres but they have watched the ProMo videos about Land Rovers crossing deserts and the Darien Gap etc. So they think, " I have one of those vehicles, I can go off on an adventure.' They put themselves in huge danger. Sorry, bit of a rant. I know they are going to fit road tyres to a Disco or Range Rover, but please don't put low profiles on just to look cool. Low profiles are for race tracks, not for dirt tracks. Idiot marketing men running a 4X4 company who have never driven in Africa, Australia or anywhere that may just kill you.

Free wheel hubs are a stupid addition to any 4wd. The whole time you are on any unsealed road you should be in 4wd, you will have better control and stop faster than when in 2wd. The pissy cheap setup of weak springs inside the free wheel hubs is far from reliable in dirty situations. I have 4wd all my working life, I have yet to see a front diff wear out because it has been over used in 4wd. My Hilux is auto and does not have free wheel hubs, I pull the 4wd leaver back when I need it on shingle roads and I take it out on the sealed roads. If you have and use free wheel hubs you must like living in the 70s when things just did not perform well, you know like land rovers, I live in a new century and have happilly left the silly unproductive things behind in favour of things that work as they should.

Andrew, the noise is a rock between the brake disc and shield. Hard to see with the wheel on. It happens to me all the time when driving thru mud or sand mixed with rocky material. I drive a Ford F-250 (Dana 60 axles) in the states. the breaking sound was the rock leaving. Yes it is a horrible squealing grinding noise and you just know something is going to break. Pull the tire next time and look for debris if it worries you enough. Alone on that track, I would have pulled the tire. Great trip. I enjoyed it and looking forward to the next video.

Agreed - stone. Happened to me on a Land Rover Discovery 4 after playing in a quarry. Hi there, I really enjoy your videos! Just picked up a 76 series wagon. What tyres would you recommend for a Simpson Desert trip? Appreciate any advice you have to offer. Keep up the great videos.

'thats bad luck.' followed by 'road tyres are totally unsuitable...' So which was it ? Bad luck or bad management.?

Stone in the brakes, first time that happened to me I was freaking out, then heard something rattle and ping out as I was driving. Local consensus was it was a stone too.

Those noise issues use to drive me crazy too. Had a old timer tell me to check for obvious issues if you find nothing obvious ignore it for 3 weeks. After 3 weeks if it's still making noise something is wrong, fix it!. Well have not had to fix anything that has been making a noise in 25 years now. Best advice ever. By the way I knew what it was once I heard it. The directional sound quality was superb!
