Holland Tunnel eastbound

The Holland Tunnel crosses under the Hudson River between Jersey City and lower Manhattan. It opened in 1927 as the first automobile link between New Jersey and Manhattan. Its design was groundbreaking as introducing the first modern tunnel ventilation system. The tunnel is named for Clifford Holland, the tunnel's chief engineer who died before the project could be completed.

I believe the reason you can even hear the radio at all in the tunnel at times is because of it being rebroadcasted through the tunnel radio cable (which allows radio to be heard in the tunnel) but it has much static and is not working well (this however was reportedly fixed in 2019). This I understand can also be used to interrupt whatever AM/FM radio station you have on with tunnel alerts if needed (like a Highway Advisory Radio channel).

This was the tunnel featured on the movie "Daylight". According to the movie the control center in inside one of the ventilation towers.

The Holland Tunnel is one of the 3 vehicular crossing between NJ and NYC , the others being the Lincoln Tunnel , and the George Washington Bridge . It spans 8,558 feet long coming Westbound to New Jersey , and the eastbound Tunnel is slightly shorter coming to Manhattan at 8371 feet

When I was a teen I went down this tunnel around 5AM on my bicycle heading the wrong way towards NJ back around 1976 to get away from the cops, came onto the exit ramp of it from the side street and almost got hit by a truck that was coming out, but I continued on in fast as I could go thinking I'd come out in NY and bike up to the GW Bridge and back home, but I didn't know about how the tunnel was, and they radioed ahead and shut traffic off and I got just past the first "booth" on that maintenance track on the wall and a guy on a maint vehicle up there was coming along behind me but his rig wasnt able to keep up with me, I think I just got past the 2nd "booth" when a police car from the NJ end came careening in, slammed on their brakes when they saw me and tried to block my way. I remember dodging the car and turning back and forth twice, they had a heck of a time turning the car around in the tunnel twice too! and I finally headed back to Manhattan and they had a line of cops holding hands like a chain across the ramp and grabbed me.

I once did pass this tunnel and it is really impressive because of it is 84 years old and still in use.. we need that kind of tunnel here in Bosphorus Strait, Istanbul, Turkey ..

Ten years ago, the last Amoco service station is no more near the west entrance of Holland Tunnel on the New Jersey side. Now Gulf gas stations are now adding more outlets. However Gulf service stations has been there all the time in Connecticut, Delaware, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, and West Virginia, since Chevron did taken over Gulf gas stations in the southern States in 1985.

Lower, slower Delaware has its version of the *loud* lettering atop the Holland Tunnel toll gate. Go to Google Satellite, key in North Rehoboth Blvd and NE Front St, Milford, DE, and work the little yellow man on Street View so he's facing the drawbridge, and read the counterweight. It was a landmark on my summer trips to Indian River (when I was little) before the Rt. 1 bypass was built.

Well, the tunnel prohibits lots of things. Vehicles over 12’6” height and 8 feet on width. No RVs or campers. No trucks over 3 axles (in use since 2001 after 911). No Hazmat Goods.

and in the rush hours you wait for entrance 30 minutes or more? I think in such big city as new york is even stupid to posess a car for purposes like going to work- from work to home. And in every big city in the world that has reliable public transportation. I spended in my last 15 years so much money on my cars (buying cars, depreciation, maintenance, fuel etc) that i could build some smaller house and garage. And i have always driven old cars...
