I have the SCHF2SM myself and it is my favorite to use for bushcraft and while hunting. I whipped the handle of mine with paracord because the bare metal gets cold in winter lol. These blades are worth every penny imho. Great video!

Brings back memory’s. I had the Schrade OG deal, real compass and first aid kit in the pouch. Plastic tube with fishing kit and extras in the handle. Saw on the backbone. I have it “somewhere” probably a collector piece by now.

They were indeed so much fun back in the day. For many of us it was our first introduction into the world of survival and what is now called bushcraft.

I bought one of those knives in the late 1980's. Mine had a camouflage sheath, will tore quite quickly. The compass dried up eventually as well. But I got my value out of the blade. I still have and use this knife. If you are aware of it's obvious limitations, don't use it for batoning, etc, it will serve you well for many years.

Yes. For such a cheap blade they are quite useful. Thanks for watching!

I read the reviews for that bushcraft knife that your school recommends and learned it is made in China but marketed as German. Chinese knives tend to be of inconsistent quality. Better bet for bushcrafting : BPS knives from Ukraine and the good old Mora. The Cold Steel SRK is hard to beat as an all-around knife.

The schrade knife has no compass does it
@WayPointSurvival6 жыл бұрын
No. As I became more skilled, the need for a compass to find basic direction lessened. For true orienteering you need a base plate compass anyway. So I did not include one in the Schrade knife.

Omigosh I had one from the Newspaper " Tv Guide " The Body was Plastic so it was even more shoddy than that one. I was happy when I received it though ! and this was before Amazon so 6 - 8 weeks later : ) It did come in handy .I do Like that More Modern one piece of steel Choice. I Like Schrade Knives My SCHF10 is still going strong after 5 years. I think your Handle survival contents are a better choice than screwdriver bits. : )

I had this exact same "Rambo" style knife when I was a kid. Damn it was crap! The handle filled with water several times, making the fish hooks rust, and the nut holding the blade on came loose and I was never able to tighten it again.
@WayPointSurvival6 жыл бұрын
Yes, they were never very good, but just about everyone had one!
@Wicklowwolf2 жыл бұрын
Mine came loose as well. But I have one of those extended nut tightening tools and one of the bits fits the nut in my knife. Therefore no problem tightening it. If you don't have such a tool, just bring the knife to your local lawn mower / chain saw repair place. They'll fix it for you.
@kaydars2 жыл бұрын
@@Wicklowwolf - I very much favour full-tang knives now, and don't bother with hollow handles. I also avoid part-handle length blades. For bushcraft/survival, you really need the strength and leverage that a full tang gets you.
@kaydars6 жыл бұрын
I've got a "tactical" Gerber Strongarm, and I HATE the serrated blade! I'm gunna grind it out eventually, when it drives me mad enough. They really shouldn't have put the serrations on at all - they are a hindrance, not a help.
@WayPointSurvival6 жыл бұрын
True. I almost always grind serrations off knives.

Dang! That's too bad. Aside from the original Chris Reeves that's about the only way to get decent hollow handled knife. Personally I don't see a lot of point to a hollow handle; it's really not the ideal way to carry stuff and perfectly round is not a good shape to get a good grip. Still it has a high CDI (chicks dig it) factor as is way cool! Rambo would have loved to have had one! :-) @@WayPointSurvival

The compartment is the best for matches, tinder and pills. For big choppers, the cylinder shaped handle is fatter in front and more isolated from vibrations, but wrapping 550 cord makes it too rough if you don’t tape over it. Most knife handles are way too thin, and the knife too light, for really rough work. The bigger Hollow Handles are a step forward in helping this, but almost no one makes them anymore...
@danielww90225 жыл бұрын
The only thing a hollow handle is good for is keeping the receipt inside of it because you will likely want to return the knife before long.
@WayPointSurvival5 жыл бұрын
Depends on the knife. You definitely get what you pay for. Which one did you happen to use?

It should be noted that this type of cheap hollow handled knife from the 80s in no way resembles an actual 'Rambo' knife from that era, and is not connected with the Rambo movie franchise in any way. It's a cheap rip-off item that is definitely NOT the genuine article and shouldn't be confused with an authentic Rambo Knife. Authentic First Blood "Rambo" knives are much higher quality. The flooding of the market with the former most likely reflects the cheapness of parents back in the 80s when spare money was hard to come by lol.
