White’s first appearance in the real world is still one of my favorite moments. He sets the tone for all his interactions with Ichigo right from the start. He immediately roasts Ichigo’s shortcomings then proceeds to show him how it’s done, which is pretty much what makes him awesome.

White is maybe one of the best representation of inner demon trope in manga. Hints about him are very subtle in beginning, foreshadowing . Then , the dynamics changes when he come out in chaotic way. He bring out fear in Ichigo, turmoil in his heart. And also the twist of White origin , and his purpose. But in actuality , his appearance and subplots are not too much, just enough for the main plotline to move forward.

Why White is a bad ass? Simple despite his abrasive nature he really does care for Ichigo. The Instinct Speech were he blast Ichigo for using reason and logic to win a fight instead of having a bloodlust to dominate and destroy his enemies. White literally brought Ichigo back to life after getting killed by Ulquiorra.

When Byakuya asked him his name, he said he has no name since Ichigo doesn't want to accept him as a part of his own. Ichigo only saw him as a taskmaster who's only role is to test him and lend him his powers. By doing that and being scared of his hollow, he is subconsciously suppressing his own power.

Zangetsu isn't one of the best, he is the best character in bleach. Note that this is coming from someone .. Aka: me. Who absolutely loves Zangetsu. I appreciate people who still remember him even after TYBW when he’s only seen like … once. He just has a perfect personality. He’s dark, cruel, but doesn’t show mindless destruction 100% of the time. He’s smart and shows his overall superiority several times in the series. The all time best moments in bleach is where Zangetsu takes the screen. I love TYBW but the best fight in the entire series is his takeover against Ichigo and he decimates Ulquiorra. From what’s been shown in the manga I have to say that that fact will remain as the best fight in the series. Great video, it was very nice to see Zangetsu get some recognition after TYBW.

My favorite thing about Hollow Zangetsu is that, despite his harsh demeanor towards Ichigo, he never actually outright disrespects him when talking to him. He just refers to Ichigo by name, or calls him, "King," "Your Majesty" or just simply "Partner." It's a little thing that goes a long way. Shows the crack in his "Bad Cop" facade that he plays alongside Quincy Zangetsu's "Good Cop."

What you just said reminded me of the fact that White referring to Ichigo as 'king' also hinted at Ichigo's Quincy heritage. White was always dry or mocking, so it would totally be in character for White to make subtle hints. White was in an agreement with Old Man Zangetsu to keep Ichigo out of harm's way, and the Old Man acknowledged Ichigo as being in charge, so in a way, Ichigo was the royalty. That agreement also favoured the Quincy part of Ichigo, so in a Quincy system, the leader was the 'king', just like Ywhach. We always thought White calling Ichigo 'King' was just his twisted philosophy of power and instinct but really, it was just White making inside jokes.

I do love the fact that when you look back at the story in retrospect the real Zangetsu's actions was always granting Ichigo's wish and trying to teach the true depths of his power. Promising in very tough love matter that if Ichigo can't handle a situation, Zangetsu itself would take over to protect him. One minor detail about the Vasto Lorde Ichigo vs Ulquiorra is that Zangetsu is very much getting payback. Because it speedblitzes Ulquiorra the same way Ulquiorra did to Ichigo. Meaning Vasto Lorde Ichigo was not mindless and knew exactly what it was doing.

I went back and checked the fight and you're absolutely RIGHT! Vasto Lorde Ichigo was copying every one of Ulquiorra's attacks against Ichigo. He even went as far as to catch the Lanza del Relampago in his bare hand just once the same way that Ulquiorra smashed through Ichigo's Getsuga Tensho. The killing blow was stomping on Ulquiorra's head as he delivered the final Cero, the way Ulquiorra used his tail to hold Ichigo up to deliver his Cero Oscuros. White knew that Ichigo would be absolutely crushed once he woke up. Ichigo was absolutely washed out by Ulquiorra and then White had to take over his body. Zangetsu was pissed.

I like how Hollow Ichigo represents Ichigo's instinct, desire to fight and bloodlust. In his inner world (or when Hollow Ichigo comes out), it is extreme and excessive. Ichigo is afraid of that part of himself because he is afraid to hurt others, even if hurting others is the only way to protect your friends. So first he goes to the Vizards, to have what is essentially a group therapy session, where he learns to "fake it until you make it" by putting on both a figurative and a literal mask of instinct and bloodlust. However that attitude is clearly not enough against Ulquiorra, and so the real instinct comes out. Then he goes to his own inner world to learn the FGT, and being there, he fully accepts and integrates that part of him - the desire to fight, to kill. He's not afraid to use that against Aizen. Aizen survives of course, but Ichigo was definitely going into the final fight with the intent to kill. Then we have the Fullbring arc, where Ichigo trains with other characters that have hollow-related powers (retconned to pieces of SK, but still kind of relevant). He trains those, further integrating them into his real self, and then finally gets back his shinigami powers. He never uses his Hollow mask afterwards, and is neither afraid nor hesitant to kill Ginjou. There is no longer any need for a mask, either figurative or literal. Kind of related observation: In TYBW, he gets his sword reforged. I'd like to think that his original and post-fullbring bankai swords are also wearing "masks" so to speak. The tsuba of the bankai is just the BAN (swastika) part of the word "bankai". As if Old Man Zangetsu thought "uhhh well I'm not giving you access to your true powers, so you can have this instead", and he gives him an Asauchi with the word Final stapled onto it. It's the equivalent of taking some old product that doesn't sell, giving it a marketing upgrade and calling it a day. Pretty funny when you think about it.

That would be going over the top. Old Man Zangetsu owed the explanation but White never needed anything other than acknowledgement and the assurance that Ichigo would fight with everything he had. White not saying a word was just the icing on the cake. There were no more words needed because White was Zangetsu, and Zangetsu was Ichigo.

My favorite scene with Hollow Ichigo/White/Zangetsu was his warning about Ichigo dying before they ever meet again. Like, it seems Ichigo gaining the ability to manifest the Hollow Mask and to control his Hollow powers had a side effect that were to occur if he died. And because it happens as such, the consequences, the loss of control, and the loss of potential occurred. What would have happened had Ichigo stayed alive long enough and had not died to where he eventually would meet Hollow Ichigo/White/Zangetsu again?

Hopefully, in cour 4, we get an additional scene for Hollow Zangetsu interacting with Ichigo when he uses Horn Of Salvation in his inner world like a flashback to Ichigo before he got down from the Soul Palace in Cour 2 : The Seperation. They should have Ichigo acknowledge Zangetsu or vice -versa face to face although this might defeat the purpose of The Blade Is Me a little bit. Perhaps during the battle against Ywach have White use Gran Rey Getsuga Tenshou with his voice while completing Ichigo of how he mastered his Hollows powers I just want to hear White's voice once again. The other option obviously is in upcoming Howling From The Jaws Of Hell arc since you get see in the digital cover Ichigo's left pupil's darkened while having a similar smirk to Hollow Zangetsu and the Hollows tend to evolve in Hell so there is the possibility of him making a comeback.

So flat out scene 5 deserves more then you are giving it credit for. That's mainly cause like many people you are missing one of the most important things Zangetsu said in that fight. When Zangetsu took over The second thing Zangetsu made clear was that Byakuya was wrong. Ichigo wasn't getting weaker in their fight, Like Byakayu was assuming it's that Ichigo's body was incapable of handling his power output. This had been hinted at in the fight with the Menos. Zangetsu confirms that Ichigo's very bones were giving out under the sheer weight of his spiritual pressure. That's why Ichigo was slowing down. He wasn't getting weaker, he just physically was breaking down. This is important because we learn later from Ulquiorra that when Ichigo first showed up, before Zangetsu asked to take him, Ichigo was stronger then both Yammy and himself. Then Ulquirra felt the Ichig's power fluctuate, which was Ichigo denying his inner desires. This is important because it negates the ass pull. When Zangetsu gets revenge for what happened to Ichigo later. The thing to remember is that Ichigo in Bankai is incapable of going all out, without being hollowed. And even then he is still getting crushed under his own weight. When Zengetsu comes up it's Ichigo's power unrestrained. He was always stronger the Ulquiorra we know just get to see by the sheer orders of magnitudes it was. The reminder that Ichigo in bankai compresses his power to wear as a mantle to in theory better handle it's output. This means that factually no one really feels the sheer weight of it aside from Ichigo. Which is further impressive because Ulquiorra is the first person to ever comment on just how absurd that power is claiming that the Ichigo that first shows up is stronger then himself and Yammy until something made it fluctuate (Zangetsu asking to deal with it, knowing Ichigo's body at the time couldn't handle what was needed.) Outside of that it is unmentioned until The first Kenpachi comments on it while healing him. Realizing that the sheer depth of Ichigos power is extremely abnormal to the point it's hard to say if her face is surprise, shock, or worry. We hear about it again when Ichigo's dad states that he is more powerful then everyone there as no one else there can even feel Aizen's Soul pressure. Outside of Aizen he never feels threatened by any other Vizard, arrancar, or shinigami, he seems to rarely even notice them unless he is actively looking for them. I mean why would he when he literally is drowning in his soul pressure. Which is something we learn exclusively from the first manifestation. And it's usually forgotton about or brushed off. Like No Ichigo was stronger then most of the bleach cast from the get go. He just couldn't handle his output. Dengai Ichigo was both a buff, and him actually being able to handle his own output.

This is completely my opinion... Ichigo was born hollowfied and by the time the story begins we learn that ichigos power was growing daily... However at this point his powers were balanced... He meets rukia gets injected with shinigami powers and this disrupts the balance (kinda ironic) of his soul which makes the other powers inside him manifest to restore the balance... old man zangetsu wants to protect ichigo but "white" also wants to protect ichigo but how they want to do things diverges greatly thus the inner conflict we see... Old man zangetsu supresses and regulates ichigos shinigami powers but he does this using ichigos dormant quincy powers however using the quincy powers instinctively stimulates the hollow powers of ichigo as a response this loop causes ichigos reatsu as shinigami to grow as fast as it did which also stimulates his still dormant fullbring powers... The Old man does his best at providing ichigo with power (to protect him) while suppressing his inner hollow (also to protect him) and shinigami powers however by fighting stronger and stronger opponents and ichigo coming very close to death in turn only further stimulates his inner hollow and slowly equalizes the relationship the old man and "white" have until "white" can break out for the first time (to protect ichigo)... With ichigo training hollowifcation his powers begin to stabilisize until his his once again pushed to the limit ... I don't think hollow ichigo want to protect ichigo but he just want to have fun by fighting ichigo's enemy, bc the one who protect ichigo is old man zangetsu, and it happen several times on manga. Remember tensa zangetsu said it was ichigo form not hollow ichigo form so it doesn't count as hollow ichigo
